Lets talk GEC!

now does any one have a 78 and and 85 to compare side by side for me. ive always wanted an 85 but see so many with EO cut that I am unsure if they always came that way due to heavy pull.

No side by side but the non EZ Open 85 (much better knife in my view) has a fairly strong pull but OK by my standards. Probably less than the Forum 14 knife that I have.

However, given the expanse of cover material, I want(ed) a shield, which the Tidioute models do not have.

From looking at GEC's site it appears there has only been one prior run of American Jacks, in 2014, and sure enough, photos show no shields on the Tidioute models. I really hope that would change this time around, as there were such great shields on the 66s.

I agree that on such a nice expansive handle, the lack of a shield would be a shame. :(

Titan,

Keep your eye on the Exchange as there are some great deals to be had there just slightly above your range. The recent #13 run of Congress knives are very nice and demand seems low as I have seen these going for deep discounts. All feature either wharncliffe or sheepsfoot main blades.
Apologies blademan as I missed this post earlier. I must admit I'm still getting used to the numbers floating around this subforum (I keep Googling for images), and I'll definitely keep my eyes open for the model(s) you cited. Thanks for the tip!

Update: I just saw the Whip line within the #13 Congress Series and they all look fascinating! Now I'm beginning to understand GEC's number coding.

I just snagged myself an ebony TC from this run. Huzzah! And after seeing what secondary is on these, I feel like I really dodged a bullet there.

Can't wait to use that sucker. I feel that the Sawyer knife is appropriate and special for me as an English teacher.

I haven't brought myself to use the BF knife yet though, not sure why.

Congratulations! This Ebony run is fantastic, definitely the dressiest of the TC's. I like the rounded edges vs the chamfered they've had in the past.

Doesn't seem to be much talk about this. Wonder if this will be a sleeper.

It is a Farm & Field knife. So it won't appeal to the collector as much as the user really. Designed to be rugged, affordable, and most of all, used. I actually plan on picking one up, I think it will suit my everyday pack quite well. If my dad was still around, I would be picking one up for him as well. Maybe it might have deterred him from using his blades of old as screwdrivers...

I might be in the minority but I'll be picking one up.
I'm not a big fan of the one arm man blade or the liner lock but it's not a deal breaker. I think it'll make an all-around good working man's knife

The first indication of the Calf Pen came out right around the beginning of April. In fact many folks thought it was an April fool's joke by GEC due to such an unorthodox array of hardware on this one. I'm not sure if folks' opinions will change once we see more production photos, but it seemed the reactions went from "interesting" to "barf" to "awesome".

Speaking for myself, I'm in the "interesting" category, and am looking forward to see how it looks in real photos and not just the moc ups.

As it stands, the calf pen really just serves to delay my Churchill.

I think it's cool that it's different and everything, but it's just not my thing.

Ha! You and I share the same sentiments. I reserved a Churchill in the Tidioute trim this time around so perhaps I will not have to wait quite as long. :D

However, like Ryan, I am still in the interesting category and will most likely pick up a Calf Pen, mostly to toss in my hiking ruck.

What is the difference between a nail nick and a crescent pull as on the upcoming 78?

Thanks, I am familiar with nail nicks and long pulls, would love to see more match strike long pulls, but, I never saw a knife listed with a crescent pull. I saw a preorder pic of the 78 and it mentioned a crescent pull and I wondered if it was something different than a nail nick.
