Lets talk GEC!

GEC knives are as good as the rest out there. They have their problems and their peculiarities as well as their promise of superior goods. They are not the unique answer to all knives traditional. Sorry, but when does the "bubble" break?

I think the "bubble" will break when another manufacturer steps up and producess a compairable product for the same or less money.

Now I can only speak for my preference but I am new to traditionals. I came over from the moderns and find trads to be better for edc tasks. I dont make a lot of money and dont want to hunt down quality examples of old knives to use (I am not a collector). Of the few case knives I have tried they where just not on the same level of GEC. The pulls where to weak in general, the blades did not snap into the open position and give me a bunch of confidence. With queens quality inconsistency of the past and me not owning diamond hones to reset edges, I have stayed away. Canal street is just boring, there I said it. The way they present their product and only have a few patterns I am not interested in carrying just has not grabbed me. The price is pretty close to GEC and they dont pin shields.

GEC has pinned shields, great walk and talk that inspires confidence, tons of frames with lots of different handle materials, blade options and above average quality control to say the least.

I have found that I prefer knives to have a straight and a bellied blade. I can find plenty of examples in GEC's lineup, not so much elsewhere(current production and non collector pricing).

Bring on the bubble popper, I am all for it. Lets just remember to compare apples to apples :)

I totally agree. I also come from the modem arena, and in my non collector eyes GEC's dominance is not a bubble. They are just vastly better.

Any thoughts on the 66's? Are the "Slim" a single blade? (The mammoth sounds awesome). Are the "Serpentine Jack" just a new run of the original 2 blade Jack, or are there other blade configs? Inquiring minds want to know : )

There are updates on GEC's production schedule. Looks like they're next after the Northfield #92 Talons.

The 66 Slim is a single spring Pen Knife with muskrat clip and pen at opposite ends. The 66 Jack is a regular clip and pen side-by-side on two back springs. :)

GEC just added a Saw Cut red bone to the Slim. This will be a very pocketable pattern in either style.

That 66 Pen version interests me a lot, looking forward to it!

When people talk about 'grail knives' I usually interpret that as a kind of elusive unattainable knife but it automatically makes me think of mine. Single spring, Serp construction under 3.75, Wharncliffe/pen, kind of Seahorse. Saw something very like it posted by Charlie. GEC's Half Whitt is too stubby and overbolsterd to qualify, their version of the Norfolk for Northwoods is too thin in blade width and the secondary Pen is meaninglessly tiny....The CASE/Bose Norfolk has a very short Wharncliffe relative to frame. So, any 'grail' requests for GEC to ponder?

I'd like to see GEC's #48 frame with a copperhead bolster and a nice, slender, single blade zulu spear.

Maybe with some white stag bone covers, like your Queen teardrop, Will.

I don't like using the term 'grail', but I am interested in the 13's when they emerge although I understand it will be a little while. I would also like to see more done with the 33 conductor frame, I think it would make a nice jack pattern and it's the only frame they have of that size. I have a whittler, which I like a lot but the pen configuration doesn't do it fo me. The swell centre is a very elegant and classic frame and I'm surprised that GEC hasn't played with it a little more.

Thanks Trand! The Slim in Cocobolo or Mammoth Ivory sound very nice!

Thank you Trand!
By the way...who or what is Kuvet? :o

Fausto

No problem guys. No clue what Kuvet is though.

Well, Barry explained it already but I wanted to say if you're unsure of the main blade, it'll be like this pic rather than the clip on the jack.

I'd like some #48 Jacks in 440C. It looks like "Bird" knives are going to be made instead. After the #82s and another run of #47s (including 440C...) they're making "#48 pattern with a muskrat clip main blade and a bird gut hook secondary blade" in both 1095 and 440C. I might get 1 or 2 of these but since I don't do much hunting, I don't think I'll get the full set.

The #33 is a favorite of mine to carry but they did release it a couple of times... They had the NF and TD runs, there was the CKnet SFO with coping, and then a run of TD buffalo with coping. The 440C ones were release as well as 2 SFOs with 440C and bails, and lastly the whittlers were made. I think there may have been another SFO somewhere in there that I'm missing. Another thing to remember is that the #66 and #68 are roughly the same frame length and each of those had a couple of releases.

And... (I was thinking while walking home from the barber) I think I'd like GEC to make another #33. I'd like a 2 blade #33 with 440C blades, clip with long pull (NF treatment, no etch), coping secondary, with MOP for the covers and stainless for the bolsters, liners, and pins. I'd also like it to not have a bail.

I knew I'd win you over lol!

Is there an analog to the #13 pattern floating around currently? Haha, I could also be reading that all kids of wrong.

Oh wow! Thanks, and I am now anticipating yet another GEC release. This is going to be a year that they capture a lot if my discretionary income it seems.
