Lets talk GEC!

Anyone have a guess on when the 78 American Jacks will hit the production line or retailers? I am single blade fan and this one is a nice size. I am curious what the jigged bone will be on the standard Tidioute and Northfield.

One of the dealers told me late October in regards to their SFO. They have to finish the 35s and maybe the 81s first. Dunno if they'll jump to the 78s before the 81s or not, though.

The two-blade models will be those that tempt me. Unfortunately, it seems like there will be many more of the singles being produced. Remember last year's Yankee Jack, the 2-blade Northfield in jigged bone? Man-o-man! I was going to sit out on these Americans, but if they produce a 2-blade that rivals that 2-blade Yankee.....might have to cave.

For anyone who is curious and doesn't have experience with a 78, here's a good article that compares it to the 77 (technically, it's an article about the Yankee Jack and features the American Jack for comparison, but who cares :p): http://tsakblog.com/tag/77-yankee-jack/

I find it curious that the author did not note the difference in the bolsters between the two patterns. Rounded bolsters for the 78 versus the squared for the 77, which would likely account for the minute difference in length. All in all though, sounds like the 78 is a nice solid, working knife. I am looking forward to their production.

The 78 American Jack is the superior knife though. :D

I dig the one on top, dressed in wood. Cocobolo? Or ebony of a sort? I stopped assuming with woods simply because I've been wrong way too many times...:D

I definitely am looking forward to these, I might have a little while to wait though, if the 81s are being done after the 35s are finished.

I caught that, too. I like the rounded bolsters. I'm hoping these 78s have the hefty pulls.

Yes we all like pictures. Thanks for adding that in. Does GEC do mock-up pictures of all upcoming knives. I have not seen one of these before.

Not all.. a fair amount do have a mock up. Usually posted on GEC site.

I wonder what "new" 78's means on GEC's site..

Any dealers know if this upcoming 78 has any changes from the last run?

The new 78's have spear main blades rather than clip main blades like the earlier run.
Also some of these are single blades. The first run were all two blades.
There is also an SFO with 3 blades on the 78 frame in this new batch.

Who's doing the 3 blade SFO? American Whittler?

I keep hitting refresh on GEC's site. :(
I know they have to stop production periodically, but, man, when they do....

the struggle is REAL. :D

Take yourself a nice little break and try not to get too stressed out. :) Refreshing won't do any good until Monday at the earliest. GEC is on shutdown this week in case you haven't heard.

I'm wondering if "new" has anything to do with the components as in blade/spring thickness or other design changes. I know the blade shapes and cover materials are different from the last run, but I don't recall GEC labeling something as "new" when referring to different blade options. Maybe it's nothing...
