Lets talk GEC!

When you hold the knife in a cutting grip, will a finger sit within the notch? That would be my only concern ergonomically.

There is a thread about modifying knives. It might be good to take the discussion there, as it is a good reference for folks when they are contemplating mods.

I think all EOs affect the ergos of handling a knife, so don't like them. But if they don't normally bother you, then there is no reason this mod should be any different. I'd keep the notch as shallow as possible to achieve the grip you want, since it's a pretty narrow frame to start with.

Hey, I'm thinking about adding a opening notch to my #13 whip, as I can't pinch it open anymore since regrinding the kick. So I quickly drew it up to visualize it.
What to you guys think? Do you think it'll affect the ergos negatively?

Thought I'd post this here, rather than to open a new thread sorry if it's incorrect.

Awesome model! Personally, I don’t use slip joints for long enough sessions for ergonomics to be a huge issue. The ergos that concern me are opening, closing, and in the pocket.

Thanks, I'll make sure to post there if I do it ;)

SV-97, what program did you use to create the visual pics?

Autodesk Fusion360

The thing is that I don't know if the notch will be where a finger is or between two. Maybe I'll just print it to check that.

Thanks :) and you certainly have a point there. The whip isn't a hard-use blade for me

I just think that on a slim handled knife that is arched, the whole aesthetics of the knife might be severely compromised. This pattern has relatively large bolsters and a centred shield so positioning the notch is going to be challenging.

EZ-Open notches look best on Barehead knives in my opinion, but then, I'm not that keen on notches in the first place;)

Thanks, Will

Cyclops, TIW, Squirrel logo? All gone. Bad side to this, I liked them. Good side, collectability.

I have heard many times the only thing predictable about GEC is unpredictability. GEC's core market centers around the collector. That is predictable.

The last run of Stainless was in 2016 and they did have the "Cyclops" stamp on the tang. So I don't believe it has gone away.

Looks like it came from the factory that way!!! Great job!

Printed it out yesterday, liked it and went to the workshop. Also refinished the whole thing(had some minor rust spots and pretty scuffed up bolsters.
Went with a notch on the smaller side; notice it hardly at all in sabre grip. Can pinch open and onehand open again :D

Yes, you are correct. Just don't see much of it anymore. It has been a long hiatus, makes me wonder.
Is this year going to be the first year GEC makes no knives in stainless? Lots of folks wanting it, that's for sure.

The Woodcocks and Navy knives sitting in inventories shouldn't be taken as an indicator of actual demand.

I agree. The Navy knives are a pretty specific collector or career item. Actually, I'd like to get my girlfriend's brother who is in the Naval Academy a classic Navy knife and the GEC would be cool to get being it's made near where we grew up but it's just a little expensive and such for a real using knife to a non knife person. So I guess it's just a collector item mostly. The Woodcock is the same, except even moreso. I've hunted game birds a good bit, and I don't use the hook thing. I'm still not even sure what it's for to be honest.

The fishing knife is pretty cool though. I hope GEC still has one in stainless next time I'm up there.

I'd definitely like to see some stainless this year. I might have just imagined hearing it, but I'm sure Bill said that a run of #22s could be coming up. I'd love to see some stainless on them.

Let's talk about bolster stamps! I'm ready for a stainless (blade(s), liners and spring(s)) barlow with an acorn stamped bolster! :)

I'm in, three or four times.

Very fine work! Looks like it came that way. Some EO notches that people do have a way of looking like obvious tinkerings, and yours doesn't.

I'm still set on not buying any 81s, but the ebony on GEC's cover today is really good-looking!

Looks like it got a satin finish on the blades, which I'm sure many will like. Very dressy!

I 100% agree with you. I think the Antique Amber is my favorite of the bunch though.

Not getting one however, as I've made myself be super picky when it comes to buying knives JUST for handle material. The abalone #38 was the last one I bought just for the handles.

Man o man, I hear that! I kinda lost my mind with the Churchills, so my budget is pretty much wiped out until after the holidays.

These 81s aren't too inexpensive either! But maybe sometime after the 43 comes in 2018 there will be some ebony 81s left over. The bone Northfields are very nice as well. Those double lined bolsters and long pulls are really doin' it for me! If these were the stockman configuration, I could really get myself in some trouble, haha.
