Lets talk GEC!

These are from a great run 3? Years ago.

The #47 Viper is my favorite pattern. Your Snakeskin is very nice.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::D

Alligators/Crocodiles are a real throwback to the dinosaur age, these monster reptiles have been on this earth far longer than us:cool: That said, I have one round my wrist now;) well a watch strap from them, and very nice too:)

Amazingly enough, snakes are fairly numerous here in Finland despite our long vicious winter:D -35c or worse. One venomous type, the Adder or Common Viper, not deadly though but not good news for cats or dogs caught off guard. And the other one is non venomous but can inflict a nasty bite, saw one near my place couple of years back, all of 1 metre (a yard+) long, they have their place in the eco system but I DON'T LIKE them too much. It is said that snakes/reptiles are a good indicator of unpolluted environment though.

I prefer the GEC Viper quite frankly:D I do have a CASE Large Copperlock in Rattlesnake bone, quite interesting too. But Copperheads? uh uh:eek:

If I found one of those in my backyard, there would be a for sale sign up the next day

Only if he doesn't find you first :D not so bad in daytime but imagine going out for an evening stroll with them slithering around in the dark aaaaarrgghh:D

So I think I'm in need of some porch wisdom here. Since meeting you lovely folks I have caught the GEC bug and have received five new specimens over the last two months: three #43's, a #14 lick creek, and a #71 bullnose. I love them all dearly, however, there seems to be a common problem with almost all of them... Four out of the five GEC's that I now own are getting blade rap. All three 43's and my new 71. I know that I can avoid this by holding the blade and closing them gently but that kinda takes the fun out of having slip joint knives doesn't it?

I've tried sharpening out the blade rap but even after multiple sharpenings, they are still hitting the back spring. The back spring of all these knives seems to have a little peak in the middle on the inside, and this is where the edge on each blade is folding over. I've heard that people will stick a little bit of foil where the kick hits the spring and I'm considering it, but I shouldn't have to do that. I'm also hesitant to send them back A) Because I really like them otherwise, and B) If 4/5 are experiencing blade rap I'm guessing it's a design problem and that new ones will likely exhibit the same issues.

I'm willing to overlook small fit and finish issues... but this is a functional issue. I shouldn't have to sharpen my knife after every time I close my knife.

What do you guys think? Am I doing something wrong? Is this not happening to you guys?

I have it on my 43 but I’ve not had it on any others I’ve owned or handled. I just close the knife gently, but I am obsessive about sharpening so I usually use a honing steel or strop on my knife if I use it. It is relaxing. The peak you see must be where the pin goes through the backspring. It can’t be modified without compromising the knife but putting something between the kick would work if you just have to have that snap shut. I don’t think it is a functional problem so much as a fit and finish issue. Some old French patterns just have the blade resting on the backspring so snapping shut is not an option.

Seems like a lot of folks having trouble with their 43s, genuinely sorry to hear that. My sample size of 3 is pretty much flawless.

I have been following the 43 thread since the beginning, so when I ordered my frontier bone 43, I asked the dealer to check it over for issues. got a great example that way.

I also managed to snag 2 stag 43s, and had to check out fast to not lose them, therefore, no time for notes. But both of them are fantastic, no blade rap, well centered blades and nice stag. Great action on all three as well.

I have no 71s, but I do have a 98 whittler with some pretty fierce blade rap. I should have exchanged it at the time but you know how that can go.
I would try to exchange a 43 with blade rap if I got one, I reckon.

I, too, am obsessive about keeping my knives sharp and whatever I carry always gets a good stropping in the evening before going back into the chest. You're right, the hump in the backspring is where the pin goes through, and you're right again, stropping is very relaxing! I see your argument about it being a fit and finish issue rather than a functional one, I remember hearing about the French etiquette with closing laguioles now so that makes sense. Still, it's a little disappointing -- and my #71 sure wants to snap shut even if i'm holding it on the way down!

My 43s are also flawless other than the blade rap and I LOVE them. So much so, in fact, that I don't want to send them back. Years down the road I suppose it will eventually sharpen out haha.

Good deal, CB!
As long as YOU are happy, that's the important thing; I firmly believe that GEC wants us to have knives with no blade rap. Sometimes it happens tho.

The great thing is that all the BF supporting GEC dealers will bend over pretty far backwards to make sure you're satisfied.

Sure you can wait tell they sharpen out but you don't need to. You can definitely send them back and get versions of each knife that's as pleasing to look at as the ones you have minus the blade rap. If I was you I'd send them back. Like has been mentioned all the Dealers for GEC and GEC itself are more then willing to help you until your satisfied. Just my 2 cents worth lol. Good luck

I live in Great Neck, NY but that 13' dinosaur was in Sanibel, Florida. That's at least twice the size of the biggest one I've ever seen there. Take my word that I've been VERY observant lately when I ride my bicycle.
Well there's no Rattlers or Crocodiles here in Canada but depending on were your at if you go into the woods you might want to keep an eye out for one of these rather Fierce Furry Fellas. :confused:o_O:eek:;)gevaarlijke-beer.jpg 6c05937d4c873acb99d6014709399687--celebrities-tattoos-whale-tattoos.jpg
