Lets talk GEC!

I know this is somewhat off current topic, and I tried to search for an answer, but does anyone know what the thickness behind the edge of most GEC knives is?

I'm planning to get a handmade small Lanny's clip (for a great price) but it's .030" behind the edge. That sounds thick to me but idk how it compares to other traditionals. Wish I had calipers!
I don’t have an answer to that question but in the Lionsteel thread the discussion showed that all of those runs were under .03 and closer to .025 or less on the newest runs. I’m pretty sure GECs are comparable to that.

Hmm well I guess I'll see, because it's paid for. Looks good and seems to be really well built, anyway!

Does the maker offer adjustments once you’ve received the knife? He might Regrind it for you if it is too thick. Otherwise some folks here could do so I’m sure.

It seems to vary. I put a 10dps bevel on everything and the bevel on my GECs may be wider or not when I'm done. One thing I have noticed is that GEC puts an extremely steep bevel on at the factory. That makes them look nice in a case, but if you want a user, plan on reprofiling. My first GEC was sharp enough but wouldn't sharpen a pencil as the shoulder of the bevel touched before the edge. Crazy.

That's pretty thick, in the Queen range. Is the grind flat or hollow?

Just had to send my ancient TC to get some work done....the centering went wacky on me and progressively got worse. It was almost touching the liner! It also started to develop some blade play :(... with that said what is the usual wait time? know the 4th is coming up too.

I am excited about these new gunstocks in production! Can't wait to see the Northfield line with the all brass bolsters. Has GEC ran all brass bolsters on a knife before?

Since you guys are working on 13k posts about GEC, I figured I'll throw this out here. What would you guys suggest for my first GEC? The 3 that caught my eye were the #15 Boys knife, the #38, and the #48 1 blade.

The #38 sure is a pretty looking knife with smooth lines. And one of my favorite EDCs is my Case slimline trapper, I've just always thought it was a smidgen too long, and the #48 seems to mimic the slimline trapper with the slightly shorter length I'd like.

If I were you I'd just go with the 48. Seems like it has caught your eye. You won't regret getting it. If you do, you can always sell it and recover or get close to recovering your funds.

Once you get one it will be hard to stop believe me!

A Ajd3530 , welcome! If I recall correctly, the 38 and 48 have the same handle, just flipped so that the 38 has the blade coming off of the wide end and the 48 has the blade coming off of the narrow end. The 48 will be the most similar to the shape of a slimline trapper. I quite like the 48, but I don't have a 38 to compare. The 15 is a fair bit shorter than the 48 but also a bit wider.

Here's a 48 with a TC barlow, which is also on the 15 frame, so the handle is the same size and shape even though it has a longer bolster and the blade is different.

Hey Taylor, I have only had one experience with getting something repaired at GEC. Seems like it took four to six weeks to get it back. Mine was only a rehandle however.

Between the three you mentioned, and considering what is available, I would personally go with a #48 Diamond Jack. There's at least a couple available at retail right now. They're a single blade #48 with great jigging, and were an SFO for Charlie Campagna.

I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but the 38 and the 48 do look like the same team. The 48 seems to have a bit morw blade though, so I'd probably go that direction.

Although now that ive seen it, the Calf Pen on the #35 frame looks pretty dang neat. I'm a sucker for anything with a one arm "razor" blade.

So last night I sent a DM to the maker asking if it was a hollow or flat grind.

Low and behold, this morning I had a message from him saying he reground it thinner (it was a hollow grind on a 14" wheel) and gave it a hand rubbed finish.

How great is that?!

I have seen GEC's from 0.015" to 0.025"+. The #15's usually have a sub-20 with a very steep secondary.

I've had a 65 and 43 that just needed blade rap sharpened out, and a 45 that had a burr on the tang that needed fixed, there since at the latest May 15. I am actually planning to call today because I've sent a couple emails over the last couple weeks and haven't gotten a reply.

I find it varies.

GEC has done some knives with all brass hardware. They made knives for SMKW under the brand Bradford Cutlery early on with all brass and a bullet shield, but they can't use that brand anymore.

That's great, Logan!

The 38 and 48 do initially look like the same pattern flipped. That is what I initially thought. However, I’m pretty darn sure that someone connected with GEC told us that they are not. It may have been in this thread. When you put them side by side and reversed you can see the differences in the curves.

This is correct. Different frames. 55/56 and 57 are same frames reversed. 38 and 48 are different.
