Lets talk GEC!

Wow. It's great to see another run of 85's. I didn't get in on the preorder, as I was out of town and cell phone coverage when they dropped. Scoring a maple would have been sweet, but that's okay. I still have a couple from the last run, even after recently selling a couple. They're beautiful knives, and unexpectedly low profile and light in weight for their size. Kind of an up-sized gentleman's knife.

I hope so. The last round of polished stag 85's had a fair amount of black grooves. I'm hoping they polish everything off on this run - like the polished stag Washington Jack. It would be nice to distinguish this run from the prior run, but can't go wrong with either. I'm crossing my fingers they will be polished smooth.

My stag is very textured, thus will probably not be all white. You can distinguish by the pattern year ;>

Yeah when I clicked onto the site it was already closed. I swear I'm going to be chasing the Northfield #85 for life. :confused:o_O

I'm guessing the polished stag will be similar to the Washington Jacks.

I'm wondering what color red the jigged bone will be? Hoping for red so dark it's almost black.

I think the Washington Jack had 3rd cut stag. To my knowledge, Mike is the only one to bring polished stag to us on a GEC.

Yup, now that you say that I remember, you're right. I like both quite a bit. Mike's is very unique. I feel like I'm forever chasing the polished stag Washington Jack. Chances are low I will ever end up finding one.

I can't say that I have ever been fond of the EO notch. Though undoubtedly useful for many folks, I have always found it to be aesthetically displeasing, messing with the lines of an otherwise perfectly shaped knife.

But, as I have found, my tastes evolve and things that I initially didn't like are showing up on my radar and I have come to the conclusion that I can't knock it until I've tried it. I used to harbor a rather staunch opposition to Stag as cover materials but it has become one of my top three favorites (Stag of the gnarly variety). Though I think the EO notch still doesn't suit some patterns, I think the #85 almost looks unnatural without one.

So with that said, I am happy to have the opportunity to check out this upcoming run of 85s. The Buffalo Bone is intriguing and the Red Jigged is, of course, going to be a classic. I didn't shoot for the Maple because I have been disappointed with Maple before but I likely will regret it, especially since Mike sourced the stuff himself and I have a lot of confidence in Mike's good taste. Though I have come to really like Stag, polished Stag is still not my cup of tea. Not yet, anyway. Baby steps... :D

The 85 is a pattern I haven't had my hands on yet, and I missed this preorder while driving. But, I will get two other new-to-me patterns in the 14 and 99, so it's going to be a fun fall. I'm also really happy to see varying handle materials on everything.

I'm in the same boat. Disappointed I missed this, but happy I'm in line for a few 14s and a 99.

Remember what Mike said about GEC doing some 85s for the rest of their dealers. Watch the releases and you may get one without preorder or secondary market.

I saw that. I don't like the Tidioute versions that have already been released as much as Mike's Northfield #85 SFO. For me, the bolsters are detailed and are a definite aesthetic advantage for this pattern.

I can't wait to see what GEC will propose for this batch of Tidioute #85 but it is now clear that the future owners of Northfield EO85 will have some very nice parts in their hands. I seriously jealous of them......

Makes me wonder if Northwoods has ever done an 85 pattern knife??

Yep, the 85’s without EO notches look a little bulbous to me, and somehow makes the knife seem much bigger. I’m surprised at how many people dislike the EO notch. Even if you think it’s unnecessary, guess what? You’ll still use it for pinch opening. ;)

It's interesting that we're seeing a repeat of the corset shield. I would have thought this run would be different, maybe a federal shield or the bomb. I really like the corset on this pattern, so all's well. Just interesting.
