Lets talk GEC!

Those Madison Barlows look like really nice knives but I just can't get into them. They don't appeal to me quite the same as a regular barlow because of the handle shape. I have a Schatt & Morgan Large Coke Bottle on the way, which is almost 5 1/2" closed (praying for good F&F) and I have one of the S&M Daddy Barlows (just under 5") which I love, but I would really like to see GEC make one of these patterns. I'm a fan of large traditional folders, especially when they're done right.

Hi Al. Is that your Russel? The only other I have seen like it is owned by Tony Bose.

Thanks

Mark

Mark, it is. Tony Bose has a #76 Fisherman's knife and mine is a #736 Hunt knife.

I think I recall Charlie hinting at the possibility of a GEC daddy barlow somewhere down the road. Or maybe I just dreamed it :)

Just when I think my checkbook can exhale in relief.

Edit: I went to the sfo link on the GEC site and it appears that the damascus is made from the steel of retired naval ships and the handles are from the decking.

Sounds like a really cool idea. I look forward to seeing more pics.

I was going to try to start a poll, but then I realized that not only is my knowledge of knife patterns insufficient, there's probably too many variants for an official poll.

To me, GEC makes about the finest production traditional knives right now. They also don't seem to be afraid to experiment with different patterns. Also, I would say they are my current favorite manufacturer. They may not listen to us, but I am just curious as to what all of you would like to see from them this next year.

New pattern, handle material, blade steel, blade shape, etc...

Personally, I would like to see a large coke bottle pattern. Also, a #65 Ben Hogan Northfield with a one arm blade.... heck, more one arm blades in general..... handle material wise.... more premium acrylics and woods, specifically desert ironwood and walnut, especially on the Northfields. 1095 is fine for me.

Charlie has said that his next run of barlows should come out around Feb. or so. I'm hoping that while they're running 15s they do some of those sheepsfoot/cap lifter scouts that we saw coming out of the rendezvous. There was one on the exchange recently that sold within a minute and it broke my poor heart to see that I had missed it.

I'd like to see some butter and molasses acrylic! I think a 3 blades 3 3/8 inch cattle knife, with spear, spey (or sheepy) and an awl on the opposite pivot would be great.

While I love jack knives, I feel that GEC doesn't do enough small 3 bladers.

A smaller and more svelte swayback pattern, similar to the Case swayback jack. Available in both single wharncliffe and whanrncliffe/pen combos.

A 3-1/8" swell center pen with tip bolsters, or a 3-1/4" shadow serpentine stockman, slender with muskrat clip main.

Some of their more popular patterns (15, 66, etc) in 440C with a full selection of handle materials.

A 3 1/2" or 3 5/8" Coke Bottle design with a single clip blade. Basically, a large Pemberton.
