I like the idea of lotto style purchases. I kind of remember the mail order my Dad would put in for stag Case knives. 3 weeks later and he’d open up a new knife and spend a few weeks finding things he liked about it. He loved stag, but I never really got into it.

anyway, long, unnecessary story short... I kind of wish you bought a knife and you got what you got. It would make the really great ones all that much better. I also hate the pressure of cycling through pictures over-analyzing in great detail, as if there’s a correct choice. I experience that on the camel bone knives from time to time.

I'm pretty sure that, as far as Case is concerned, the only way to buy your stag is lottery style. I haven't seen any sites with individual pics, anyway. I ordered a Case 75 pattern large Stockman in stag and really got a beauty. Others have been pretty average, on average.

I'm feeling nervous at having played the lottery now. I hope my 86 is a good one!

It's been a couple years since I've bought a new Case knife, but unless things have changed drastically, even their jigged bone is a lottery. :confused: :D
 
Sorry- it was more of a story about lottery rather than case being sold as specific individual knives anywhere.

I think luck of the draw has some appeal that’s lost when buying some of these beautiful GEC’s.

No, I get what you were saying.

There are a couple of sites (including site sponsor BladeHQ) where you don't get to pick your stag. So "luck of the draw" is still very much in full effect. Of course, I request that mine be inspected for pin cracks and F&F. ;)

Ahhh, I double clutched. Haven't ordered yet. Actually started thinking about getting 2 Case knives instead. Blasphemy, I know. I guess it makes more sense to snag GEC's when they're still at dealers though, right?

Yes, with GEC, you get one chance to buy. I like Case knives too, but I haven't had good luck with them lately.

With the exception of the F&F line, I don't believe GEC ever exactly repeats a pattern configuration. I think forum sponsor DLT has yet to drop its stag 86s, and they do individual pics. I got too antsy and went ahead and ordered one sight unseen.

Where are you finding the 86s at and what handle are you getting?
 
How much time do you folks spend deciding what GEC is going into your pocket in the morning?
My wife makes fun of me as I’m carefully figuring out what kind of use I expect for that day.
Whittling during lunch?
#35, #92, or the #15 & #06 wharnecliffe in the watch pocket.
Wife packs me an apple?
#93 micarta
Going to church?
#14 or #06

no matter what, a SAK goes in the left pocket just in case
 
Not that much time. Usually just leave it to chance.
