Lets talk GEC!

1st post mostly just a lurker. It was me who bought the knife..I recently got into traditionals and the 86 bf was a grail. My money def. does not come easy (i run a lawn and garden business). I know it seems like a lot but i dont spend money frivolously often and when i saw it pop up i had to have it.
I didnt mean to offend you if i did, i agree its worthy of grail status. Different strokes yada yada. Im sorry that i was late to join here to get one for myself

Congrats! I’m glad you were able to get your prized possession. I wish you many great years with it, though I wish it hadn’t cost you so much!
blame the second place bidder, he went really hard the last 10 sec... LOL

Feel no shame friend. My grail for the longest time was a ebony GEC 81 stockman. I have seen two of the 52 produced, one belonging to a forum member here and the one I bought off the bay. I paid dearly for my grail and do not regret it, it is the finest knife in my small collection and worth every hard earned penny. Now if I could only find the yellow rose version.

The barlows are on a 14, 15, or 77 frame. The bolsters and blade types will vary. I was told the punch blade on the 98 pattern was done by a different company but have never confirmed that with GEC.

??? yes...14 and 15 are TCs and the 77 is the Northfield, all SFOs, all requiring tooling to create the Barlow bolster. From my understanding, GEC only releases these in ageeement with Charlie for the TCs and Mike for the 77. Charlie agreed to allow the 15 TC to become the BF knife...a mutant of a SFO as it was both Charlie's model and a club knife.

i know that feeling. I joined in a bit late after the 2014 bladeforums stag jack. It was a heated chase for sure. But eventually they came. The game was not as expensive fortunately in 2015.

"A chicken in every pot" Charlie did his best to make sure those who wanted one could get one at a fair price.

here is a fond memory of the proud papa holding his new born fresh from Bill's hands

I remember that knife, Jack!:D First one off the line!! Thanks for the picture!!!:) That's still one of my favorite shirts!!!!

I can understand why the focus should be on the knife, I mean... look at that beauty... but I feel like those oceanographers who find pieces of the illusive giant squid. We get to see the hands and stuffed breast pocket of a legend. waynorth waynorth do you figure your neighbors know there’s a community of people who await your next concept?

(golly what a beautiful knife!!)

My "collecting" has changed a lot over the last few years.
I used to chase a lot of patterns that I didn't have and wanted.
But it was a time where you could get a decent user at a reasonable price.
I hunted down some good ones, and if they didn't work I sold them for what I paid.

But nowadays you pay dearly for second-hand GEC knives, users or not.
So, my collecting is now limited to new releases or knives people are willing to sell at retail prices.
It's still fun because I can't wait for the day that they re-release something I'd been wanting for a while.
It adds a different feel to collecting when you have to wait for releases instead of constantly searching the secondary markets.
It's still a lot of fun and I guess i can thank the flippers for saving me time and money.

In other news... My recent email from @gunstockjack said that GEC will be releasing a new pattern soon.:thumbsup:

IM(not so)HO, TCs are the gold standard for GEC’s SFOs. They are in large part the GEC release that started much of the frenzy. They were initially produced in pretty small lots but that changed with the later 2016 (THE chicken in the pot) and 2017 releases which were both produced in the hundreds along with the 2017 BF TC. Some of mine were bought retail, others from BF members and a couple from the bay...but at prices that would be considered cheap these days. From 1:00; a couple 2013s, then five from 2014, two from 2016 including a Beerlow conversion, and a 2017 at 12:00. Hard to believe that there will be no more TCs coming down the GEC production line. As I noted above someplace (been posting a lot recently, guess I’m needing some distractions) GEC should hire Mr. CC as an Executive VP, Head of Design!!

I also get annoyed when I’m being bid up with seconds to go in an auction. I’m glad you were able to get her though! I’m sure we’ve all ponied up the cash for a grail that we had to have. I know I have. Enjoy in good health!

His exact words were... "Also: Bill Howard is working on a "secret" pattern that I'm not able to find out about. He is offering no clues, but you can be sure it will be great!"

I saw this today too. Couple that with what Randy was saying on Facebook (with regards to bankrupting us with all the cool new knives coming) and it should be an exciting stretch coming up.

WOW
