Lets talk GEC!

I have never tried to carve anything. I can't draw a simple picture to save my life!
I have always believed people that can carve or sculpt must also be very good artists. Must the two necessarily go together? I believe yes.
Actually, you don't need to be terribly artistic... it's more a "learned" thing. Watch a couple/three videos by one of the online instructors, and just follow their instructions.... there will be a lot of "pause/start" involved, but it's easier than you think. After you do 2 or 3 of the same thing, like a little owl, you will get the feel for what makes a good carving. Check out Doug Linker... he's one of the best at showing how to do it..... and he's humorous... great sense of humor. Jump in and do it! Like Doug says, you need your knife to be really sharp... then learn a few basic types of cuts, and go for it!

I bet you can’t
Don't take the bet! it's a trap!

Working from home usually has me meandering about in gym shorts until it's time for chorin' - then the Levis get put on. :D
"Time for Chorin'... " Sounds like Wayne from Letterkenny

Get a cubed piece of wood, draw an X on each side from corner to corner, and remove the triangles from each side.

Done.

If you want pictures you will have to wait till tonight.

Clever- connecting the centers of each face of the box, while following the "x" for a guide, in effect making a bunch of equilateral tetrahedrons. I love those deceptively easy tasks. Great work.

Makes me want to try that out on generalized parallelepiped shapes instead of a cube to see the dramatic changes in angles.

And that's a great point about using any knife to do it. I'd bet even a bull buster would get it done.

There it is! Go ahead and start the thread Jiki’s traditional knife carving tutorials please. Next up, chains then figures. Along with whittling techniques because I only ever have the knife facing away from me. Thanks Jiki good idea!

I was gonna say- what’s he wear on Sunday- Friday??

This is heading into dangerous territory where soon I won't be able to look your avatars in the eye anymore.

This might belong in the "Pàdruig 2020-2021 Calendar" forum, or at the very least "Traditional Slip Joints: Under the Covers" thread.

(get it? covers?)

Back to GEC...
r8shell r8shell - what's your most used GEC? I figured you'd have chimed in on that part.

Time to change the subject again, huh?

I guess my most used GEC could be the #29 Stockyard Whittler I got last summer in the middle of one of the worst heatwaves, and challenged myself to carry it every day until the first frost, which came in December, I think.

Or it could be the #09 Esquire that I used to always carry as a secondary little watch pocket knife. That way, I always had a small coping blade, in case my main knife didn't have a straight edge.

Hi All. New member here. I’ve been lurking for a while. Got room for a new voice? I got bit by the GEC bug about three years ago, I have more than 50 now. My early favorite carry was the Churchill but it was eclipsed by the camel bone 92. It fits my hand perfectly and while I’m more of a clip blade guy I prefer a coping blade secondary.

Welcome aboard! It is an honour to be the first to make your acquaintance. Sounds like you may be new here but not new to the game with a roster of 50.

welcome to the porch, friend! I also carry the Churchill and #92 often. Great knives. At 50? I’d say you belong here more than I do. :D

Welcome! Come on in, make yourself at home.... let's see some pics! I agree with you about the perfect fit and feel of the 92's... I would like to try a churchill, but they are normally out of my price range. I'd like to see pics of yours..

Thanks for the welcome, I got into traditionals collecting vintage Connecticut knives, when I first heard of GEC’s I was a bit put off by their revival of one of my grail brands, Northfield. I was busy with work at the time and it took me a while to realize GEC was why S&M quality had taken a nosedive. Once I finally tried one I was hooked. I love it when they revive old and rare patterns to try as users.

I can’t remember if someone posted this previously or was just making a jigging comparison of the Waynorth lambsfoot and M&G Yankee Whittler. In any case, here’s a quick comparison of them as well as the jigging on the red tail 23.
The lambsfoot and YW are very similar, but I will say that I do prefer the depth on the YW.
