Lets talk GEC!

Talking of Cougar Claw....

There's been a lot of speculation/ tittle-tattle ;) about a 'run' of 35s coming soon. I see NO concrete evidence of this at all, if dealers or people of Charlie's stature haven't heard tell of it then we can assume that this is but wishful thinking. Problem with this, being on the Internet the more people who indulge this phantasy the more it gains credible currency and then people feel outraged or short-changed when nothing materialises-out of nothing :D

No doubt about it, the 35 frame is an impressive but elegant and pocketable knife. I'd like Spear master and small Pruner minor, or even a small Clip as minor. It will certainly host a Scout or maybe Cattle Knife type too. Lot of possibilities but let's not forget the 68 White Owl its junior Equal End sibling, this frame offers a lot of potential too, even a scaled down Scout. Complex to make though. The 68 has not been run for a long time now but since the 33 has been resurrected maybe more single.springs will appear. I said 'maybe' not inside rumours :D

It might even have something to do with colour or dye? I say this because a Tidioute 25 (2009) I have in Orange came with really sharp shard like bits coming off the jigging, it soon smoothed though ;) Similarly a Red 82 Dixie had a lot of very sharp splintery bits, haven't carried this as I don't like it nearly as much as the original run. This same red bone appeared on the Possum Skinner and 92 Eureka and think it could be splintery too. The TSA SFO 92 has a kind of deep but wavy Winterbottom style jig but no sharp parts on these, same with Cougar Claw.
I have the 92 possum skinner in elderberry and it is chewed up. The examples I have of those other knives are very smooth and crisp. I would think that the two factors that contribute the most to this issue is the bone itself (which you can't control) and the sharpness of the jigging blade (which should be controlled).

The bone is treated but I suppose the hafting process especially where the pins are pressed in? (i dont know the correct term for that) still catches and can affect the bone. After peeling the splinters off, mostly fine. In fact its in my pocket today.

I've had a couple GEC knives with splintery bone.
One is my #92 Eureka and the other was a #48 Trapper.
I cured the problem quickly with some fine sand paper.
Hey John
You wouldn't happen to have any before and after pics would you?
Just wondering what the bone looks like after light sanding. Is it noticeable?

My #15 Crown Lifter had a few peaks between the jigs that felt a little sharp and chipped off. That's how you know your knife is fresh! :p I think I just rubbed it on a strop a few times and put it in my pocket.
As long as it's not a real crack that goes deeper, it doesn't bother me.

Nope, no before/after pics. :(
It really didn't look any different, just took the sharp edges down.
If you sand, it goes without saying, stay away from shields and bolsters. :D

Thanks. I don't have any I intend to sand, but its nice to know that it won't mess it up if I ever do.

Will Power Will Power a few days ago I mentioned the #35 calf pen could use improvements. That sparked a few responses here about the #35. Not sure if that was the cause of the rumour or just a coincidence.

Apparently the same discussions took place on another forum.
Those discussions probably stemmed from talk here.
Then the rumors filtered back over here again.
With each infusion it is stated more as a fact.
Telephone game at its finest?

I polished with Brasso the bolsters on my #23 Micarta last night. It had gotten dropped and I used the fine sharpmaker stone to knock down the high spots then Brasso. Great results.

I was wondering if this would work on my GEC 15... with jigged bone handles (or any other knife with bone handles). Of course I wouldn’t intentionally rub the Brasso on the bone. It would probably get rubbed close to the bolster though. Anyone have a warning against Brasso contacting bone?

With the last of 23's heading into production and an apparently small 33 run it doesn't seem like we will have a long wait to see what the next pattern actually will be.
Any guesstimates on when the next pattern will be announced?

With all the talk of the #44s recently I had to throw mine in my pocket. It's a very nice knife. With some of the best walk and talk!

I love that version! I was able to find a used autumn gold jigged bone when TSA acquired someone's collection (which was a better deal than the new ones that are still available so I went for it), but the cocobolo is much better looking IMO! Beautiful knife.

I’ve had that happen on a couple GEC’s. I’d just throw the knife in my pocket and let it sort it self out. :D

This #15 Farm Boy had a few spots that splintered. The spot the arrow’s pointing to was the most noticeable (I might have carefully removed a small splinter of bone from that one, I can’t remember.) It’s smooth now, but you can still see where it was. (The chips around the top-center pin were there when I bought the knife new.)

I’d love to see more spearpoint #35’s.

This one has had a bit of sanding due to rough peaks in the jigging

Was that the Golden Ale jigged bone that you dyed brown? If so, it’s a huge improvement!
