Lets talk GEC!

With all the talk and speculation of the #35 pattern potentially being run in different blade configurations, let's look at the venerable Queen Cutlery Pattern #99 for inspiration.

Basically, they are almost identical from what I can tell. And yes, they even made a split back cigar whittler in that pattern. I have one and will have to get a picture of it to post (no photoshop needed) its been done. Mine was an sfo for C.Risner under the S&M brand.

But look at all the beautiful #99 QCC and S&M scouts that were put out, not to mention the Northwoods Indian River Jack. If you want to see where the 35 could go, Google the QCC #99 pattern. It was a real winner as well.

Anyhow here is an equal end cigar split back whittler in the same size of the gec #35 pattern. Now, how about a 35 cattle knife? Clip main, sheep and punch!!!!!

As promised.

1¼ inch basswood cube, favorite whittling knife, and recommend a glove.
Draw your Xs.

Then just remove a triangle.

buying GEC here on the exchange was frustrating last winter when I tried to quit traditionals. Now it’s even worse. There is always a few people that scoop up all the good within a min or two. I want to say “good for them” but after months of seeing the same person get them all, I am bitter.

yep, somethings smells "fishy" … or at least looks fishy.

I can’t remember if someone posted this previously or was just making a jigging comparison of the Waynorth lambsfoot and M&G Yankee Whittler. In any case, here’s a quick comparison of them as well as the jigging on the red tail 23.
The lambsfoot and YW are very similar, but I will say that I do prefer the depth on the YW.

thanks for the post! It’s easy to forget that not all GEC jigging is made equal. I have some lack luster examples compared to most. It’s generally driven me to prefer smooth covers.

I have a user Churchill you can pocket for a week and then send it back. PM me.

hahaha great minds- I was going to extend the same offer. hornetguy hornetguy - that extends to you doubly for any future curiosities.

I must say- it works. I love the cigar split back Whittler. Do want. Do very much want.

haha I’ve been working on the same thing. I’ll post pictures in a second :). It’s a great project. Thanks for the idea!

I can understand people wanting a run of GEC 35s . They are a serious knife . It would give me a chance to not have to buy another one because I do not think that I could do any better than these .

Harry
Harry, as always... phenomenal specimens. It brings me joy to see the #35 appreciation. It’s a simple knife that makes a statement.

Thanks again for the idea Jiki Jiki
It’s not done yet; This is what I was able to get done after my son went to bed. Pretty straightforward- didn’t even use a perfect cube for it, which is hard to tell as it nears completion. In the spirit of welcoming our new friend @RickNB i did it only using the master blade of the #92, to this point. It’s 2 1/8” butternut.
Another picture once I finish it.

so true. the jigging on my 92 has bone falling apart actually. the bone has chipped off in various places. maybe its cause off the modding? but i doubt it. bone can be fragile and i dont think there were any wood options in the latest run. was happy just to get one since the eureka jack pattern has been recommended to me very often.

I’ve noticed that on my 14 and 15 from 2018, and I witnessed it on a #92 from 2019. My theory is the really intense jigging cases <causes> hairline cracks in the bone that cause bone to chip off the high spots. I’ve had thread hang up in the jigging before, which is how I first noticed it. Now I can just feel it by touch.
After a while I don’t notice it anymore, but it’s not my favorite phenomenon.
Edit: typo.

Nothing unusual about that. The bone covers on my WCLF have chipped in places. No worries though, it stops after a while.

I agree its tacky. I can understand an inflated price if its a knife that hasn't been on production for a while and there aren't that many around. I've paid more than I should have for a couple (three? ok, maybe four) knives, but I can't understand people who would pay a grossly inflated price the next day after they've sold out o_O

Or in the case of GEC, I see inflated prices on knives that are still available from dealers. That I truly don't understand

What I don't understand is the folks who buy a knife at the inflated price when the same knife is available for retail at a dealer...that is mind boggling.

indeed, i also tend to spin the knife between my fingers when Im bored in the clinic, hence i pick it up more. Suppose i make it worse by picking at that bone that seems to splinter. I do favor wood/or smooth bone for carry.

It might even have something to do with colour or dye? I say this because a Tidioute 25 (2009) I have in Orange came with really sharp shard like bits coming off the jigging, it soon smoothed though ;) Similarly a Red 82 Dixie had a lot of very sharp splintery bits, haven't carried this as I don't like it nearly as much as the original run. This same red bone appeared on the Possum Skinner and 92 Eureka and think it could be splintery too. The TSA SFO 92 has a kind of deep but wavy Winterbottom style jig but no sharp parts on these, same with Cougar Claw.
