Lets talk GEC!

Neither is micarta. I would posit that once you accept some synthetics as traditional materials (like modern acrylics and micarta), it's hard to draw the line.
You are not wrong and this discussion has been had many times before. GEC uses delrin and micarta over G10 because they do.

Editing my post so it doesn’t seem flippant. Queen use to use delrin and micarta. Bill came from Queen. He still uses delrin and micarta.

I have a Buck from the 60s with black “saw cut” synthetic covers. I assume Delrin. And celluloid (less stable version of modern acrylics) has been used for 100+ years. Micarta has been around since the 40s I believe, maybe longer. So, synthetics are definitely traditional to some extent.

Personally, from a nostalgic perspective I appreciate a company that doesn’t feel obliged to hop on the latest bandwagon every six months and try to convince me of the merits of the “latest and greatest.” I can’t think of a single realistic use-case where Micarta wouldn’t do the job but some new super-synthetic would.

Something to ponder. I believe the MASSASAUGA is among the smaller sized rattlesnakes. Maybe this new knife is a swayback that is sized between Case and the GEC Viper?
Yea, I’ve been trying to read into that as well, clearly a rattler, all rattlers are vipers so why the name?

I like your out-of-the-box thinking here. :cool::thumbsup:
Their were rumors of a new pattern. A medium sized swayback would be nice.

yeah I’ve had this on my mind. They’re being cagey about it, which I’m not sure I’ve seen that on anything but new patterns. Whatever it is, they know it’s going to be desirable.

I wonder how good GEC is at determining popularity of a pattern? I’m sure they must make some patterns because the business thrives on variety, as opposed to going for the jugular of our scrawny wallets.

For instance I don’t think the calf pen was terribly popular, but GEC did Jiki Jiki and @Misplaced Hillbilly (among others) a service by making them.

I’m sure the #97 has a few loyal fans, too, but I’m guessing it’s the same situation.

I will not pretend to know what makes these decisions, however I have seen several times that there are two factors for a knife not to be made again. 1. If it was a PITA to make (the camp knife) and 2. If it sat on dealers shelves a long time (little indian girl canoe sorry @knifegirl1 ). That being said they could always change their mind.

You mean kind a like this. :)
