Lets talk GEC!

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the Beer Scout. I believe, and hope, that we will see it again in all but name. The only problem was the use of the word “Scout.” GEC has every right to make the very same knife with a different name, and why wouldn’t they? It is extremely popular, and they often revisit the 15 pattern.

Someone mentioned the Charred Oak is their favorite. It certainly is mine. If you remember, they surprised us with the Charred Oak at the very end of the run. I called GEC to try to get one. Christine Tucker answered the phone. After saying I could have one, she asked which serial number I would like. Numbers 1 and 2 were reserved for the factory so I took number 3! Things were much easier back then! I sure miss Chris and think of her often. I hope she is okay. Does anyone know how she is doing?

If you want to read more into the images down the hall, a simple Google search has found a couple. The "viper" is from a coloring page.:D:D:D:D

Hmm...an albino viper...very interesting

This is the first GEC I owned. I bought it new from the dealer.

It sat on the dealer’s shelf long enough for me to ponder the purchase for a few days, but I really don’t remember them languishing on the shelves for months. I couldn’t pull the trigger immediately because at the time it seemed like a lot of money for a knife. Now it’s one of my favorites.

None of us know for sure what exchanges took place between GEC and BSA, but I doubt the word 'scout' is the issue - more likely to be the phrase 'beer scout knife' which mimicks the phrase 'boy scout knife'. I don't want to stir the pot on this well-worn topic, but I say this because I really hope to see GEC knives with the word 'scout' on them in the future. Like you, I hope to see the pattern again.

I came to the GEC party all the Beer Scouts were long gone. So I ended up picking up this ebony crown lifter as almost an after thought one day. I don't carry it much but I use it all the time. It stays in the front of the junk drawer in the kitchen. I grab it for all kinds of things including opening bottles. Just a good little knife.

Great knife! I gave one in jigged bone to my friend who is also a beer enthusiast. He loves it and carries it with him.

I enjoy such projects but I don't get the opportunity very often. Looks like you have the perfect environment to do the work! I would love to see pictures of the finished product.
Take care,
Rick

curious to get a look at that workbench! I enjoy hand tools and would be interested to see a workbench designed for the use of them.

thank you, thank you!
I was working on the project more tonight. I had to move inside due to the lack of light, but I’m still using my Pocket Carver to chamfer edges. Works better than my plane or spoke shave around corners.
Pardon the mess- my basement isn’t really in the most orderly condition ever. My low Roman work bench was made completely with 2x4’s and glued together. I used screws and a power drill to clamp the boards together while it dried. I also made the moxen vice by hand. You’ll see the faux joinery for the legs. It works great- I love the bench.

Yes, you are right about Chris and I too hope she is OK - Chris made Great Eastern a personal place and she was friendly in her conversations...

I was just on GEC's "things to ponder" page. I see the Appaloosa Viper and the Beer and Suasage, but that last picture is not a rattlesnake.

Oh man, mine has been in my pocket since I bought it, the screwdriver is the best!

I was not a part of the GEC scene when the scouts were released. That charred oak is stunning though and completely befitting for the knife. Hopefully they come up with another scout pattern. But, if the rumors and speculation are true, what they have coming up is equally as exciting (for me).

According to the googles it is.

Interesting. And U.S. fish and wildlife lists it as a threatened species.

PA's rattlesnake season just finished up July 31st and Titusville is nestled between some prime snake grounds. Ive never seen one of those though......Ive only seen Timber Rattlers in MD and PA, although FWS says they do exist in PA.....thanks Jiki Jiki

I grew up in Michigan. Did a lot of hiking, camping, etc. Never saw one and don't know anybody who ever has. They weren't common even back in the 60's and 70's .

From this barrel... I"m not sure about the exact number, I think around 100 made. They did a run of non charred oak and the same time.

I like a knife with wood handles on the darker side, that charred barrel oak sure does look nice
