Let's talk traditional, pocketable, fixed blade knives.

This is a timely thread for me Woodrow. Taking off from my own thread today about my ongoing pursuit for my perfect knives, fixed blade knives are a very good compromise for me. However I have never considered pocket carrying one so this subject really interest me.

Also might I suggest keeping an eye on the knife makers for sale section. One knife maker duck Childress has been putting a lot of smaller neck knives up for sale lately - nice and small with a very nice build quality - and very reasonably priced. I have one of his larger fixed blade knives and it is beautifully made.

I'll be following along here looking at the options offered. I just never thought there was a sheath that would work for pocket carry.

Your thread and the bark rivers made me start it. I like my Izula 2 and I have a Candiru that I'll carry at times, but a traditional option would be nice. Thanks for the tips!

Timely thread. Sat night I ordered a Bark River City Knife and KSF pocket sheath. Hopefully it will be here tomorrow. I debated the Little Creek, but for this order the bigger handles won out.

Bark River Blackwater Bootknife. 6.25" Sandvik steel.

Hesss Knifeworks Caper in Burlwood, about the same but in carbon.

I've never really talked about my fixed blades much here. I have a hard time defining "traditional" when it comes to them. I'm guessing that all but the 2 largest ones on the right might qualify?

Stan, what's that white-handled knife third from the left, between the Queen and the Great Eastern? That's really nice lookin'.

A couple of my favorite 'pocket-able' fixed blades:

Blind Horse Bone Trapper (5-3/4" overall):

Bark River Little Carver (5-3/4" overall):

Blind Horse Lil Muk (5-3/4" overall):

Any of them will fit easily in a KSF pocket sheath.

I have had a Burt Foster Mini-Darksider for years and it's proven itself time and time again. I think these traditionals should be much more legacy driven, in the style of blacksmith knives.

That's one my eBay specials....and one of my favorites especially for the price I paid.

Don't know much about it - on the tang is Imperial Providence RI USA.

It measures 8.25" oal with the blade of 4".

I've got the same knife in my pocket right now. Burt hit a home run with these.

Yours looks a lit-tle more used than Peregrin's. :D Foster's work stands out to me, and this knife especially.

I have these two in O1, a THK Strix and a BHK Patch Knife:

The Strix pushes the limits of "pocketable" at just over 7", but I knew it would going in. I wanted it to be a good handful of flat-out useful-- and it is-- while for me the idea of a belt sheath is... nah.

I usually back-pocket the Strix in the KSF sheath (easy to reach and withdraw the knife, more care needed to re-sheath it), while the BHK's sheath fits neatly in my front or leg-side pocket, with easy retrieval of the whole sheath by its loop (or of the knife only, depending on leverage via the loop, pocket friction, etc.).

The Strix's included sheath (made by Angie Terrio) works well in either a front pocket or strapped to my pack's waist band, with its enclosed rare earth magnet adding extra security while hiking, etc.

Nick Wheeler JUST posted a few of these for sale the other day and there may be one left if you hurry! - I bought mine over a year ago.

6 inches of 1084 goodness

Hey Isaac- Looks like your sheath needs a little love! If you send it to me, I'll fix that. No need to send the blade, just the leather.

Thanks for the mention, I really appreciate it. :)

And not to push my own stuff, rather just to join the conversation. Back when I worked at the paper mill, we weren't supposed to have a big knife visible, so I made up a simple little slicer that would ride in the side pocket of my Carhartt jeans. I used to get so much grief about it from my crew, "You make $2,000 bowie knives and you're packing around a prison shiv?!?!?" ;) LMAO

I get a kick out of it now, because since I decided to make some for sale, there are about 100 of them floating around out there in guys' pockets. :)

This was my original---

I love little fixed blades, but generally set them up for belt carry. However I've had luck pocket-carrying a small flat-scaled utility and kiridashi.

I'm learning a lot in this thread - a good thing!

While learning that a person can carry a fixed blade in a sheath in their pocket, I took a look at one that I have. This one is hand made that came with my custom fixed blade. Looking at the shape of some of the others in this thread, it looks similar - just that mine also has a belt loop. So I am thinking that if this one didn't have the belt loop it would work for pocket carry.

This knife would be a bit large for pocket carry, but I can see in my future getting a smaller knife with a plain sheath like that. I'll have to dig back through the thread to find some on-line sources.

I keep a knife in my coat pocket. Seven inches overall. Three inch blade. Comfortable four inch handle. Enough guard to keep my fingers off the blade, even if I’m in hypothermic or in shock. Stronger than any folder. I won’t name the brand since it’s not traditional.

I’d like to find an affordable traditional with the same specks.

It’s too big to keep in my pants pockets though.
