It's no secret I'm a big fan of Daniel's work

He makes the best Puukkos

These Finish wood carving blades are a dream to those that demand high performance for outdoor recreation, bushcrafting or hunting.

I had been geeking out on knife steels with Daniel.

Without access to commercial liquid nitrogen it looked like high end PM steel was never going to happen in a Malanika Puukko.

I wasn't going to take no for an answer

I have personally taken my time and effort to provide Daniel with the raw materials needed to for him to make this a reality

A high end PM steel Puukko

These will be very limited

This is a labor of love

I'm not making money from this

I haven't revealed the steel because I thought it would be fun to have you all take a guess haha

I'll update with more information and details later.

Needless to say

I'm excited!

The steel is CPM M4 (9/3/2016)
:D

Been drooling over puukos lately. Sounds intriguing. Looking forward to updates.

One question, why wasn't some of the stock removed before heat treat. I would think that would really help speed up the process.

Uhhhh...ok?

Yeah...I'm not following who or what you are promoting. Are you doing the HT or something?

And does your Gold Membership level allow you to promote a knife that you had a part in making?

Maybe I need some more caffeine.

I have a couple of Daniel's knives already, but I'd still like one with a stacked birch bark handle. Do you know how these will be finished?

I think he's just letting us know, and I for one am glad he did! For us who follow the fixed blade custom market, we know that the his Puukko's are some of the best in the world. Each one is nicer than the last, and with cool PM steels being introduced into the mix, that's just an awesome sandwich. Looking forward to what he does with ... gotta be 3V...

For those who are confused:

Malanika is a knife maker who sells his knives in the 'knife makers for sale' area of this forum. He specializes in Puukos. The OP is collaborating with Malanika or perhaps simply commissioned these knives in order to create some Puukos in a super steel. The OP is letting everyone know about his endeavor.

Perhaps a thread like this would be better suited for the custom knives section of this forum? WIP and collaboration project threads are pretty common there.

To the OP:

Cool project, I like Malanika's knives and this could turn out to be something special. Make sure if you decide to sell the knives via blade forums that you follow proper membership protocol.

My guess is also 3v

Haha I know right? Me too

Why no stock removal?
1.even heat treatment throughout the blade
2. Don't have to deal with warping issues.
3.its a High speed steel that doesn't loose it's temper very easy. It has a high red hardness.
4. They will be ground on a first waterstone wheel. For speed and also for temper with is not a huge concern given the steel.

Daniel will make his own thread with that information soon.
I'm guessing CPM-M4
:)
3V seems to be the "it" material this year. And depending on the heat treat, deservedly so.
:)

Exactly, I'm just excited and wanted to share.

There are no prices because IM not selling these.

I'm sharing how I contributed to something awesome.

I'm making no money on these. I processed and gathered the material through third party sources(I did not make them) and gave it to Daniel for a some of my cost and a custom knife in this bad ass steel.

It took monthes of my time and effort with no pay only cost

Like I said before just a labor of love, took alot of overtime shifts to make this happen.

I just wanted" this steel " in "that knife"

We all talk about how we wish certain knives were in certain steels

I'm making that dream a reality versus waiting for some one to make what I'm looking for :)

So either this is very exciting or completely esoteric.

With 7 billion people in the world you just can't please everyone:)

I posted this here because I love to share my excitement with all of you.

Maybe the MODs can move this to the custom knife section :D

Forgive me I'm still rather new to all the facilities here

I mostly hang out in the reviews, general discussion and maintaince

Thanks guys

Shawn.

In my defense, I think this is pretty sweet, I was just taking a stab at explaining what you were doing. I personally find it very cool that you are collaborating with a custom knife maker to make a run of knives that you think is cool at your own expense. I love Malanika's work and find his puukos to be very close to perfect aesthetically.

Very cool project. Thanks for sharing.
Malanikas work is very inspiring.

Intriguing for sure. I've always drooled overy his puukos, and this might be the impetus for me pulling the trigger on one.

Sprint Run...it is interesting to note how Sal Glesser has influenced our terminology.

Actually, I have skipped his great puukkos just because of the steels he used. Time to pull the trigger now.

Hahaha sorry brother, just got into a rant, wasn't directed at you, just typed from the heart. :)

Definitely captured my imagination when I first saw his work last year

Haha I feel ya
Sprint Run...it is interesting to note how Sal Glesser has influenced our terminology.

Sal Glasser is the Godfather of modern knives. He has inspired an entire generation with his work.

If it wasn't for Sal and Spyderco I probably wouldn't have fallen this deep in the rabbit hole.

Definitely have to pay homage to Sal with his "Sprint run" offerings

Can't wait for next year's too :)

You would be surprised at how well 80crv2 at 62 does with a fine edge :)

Thanks guys

Just Imagine these

In PM Tool steel:)

I have only one Malanika Puukko so far and I'm quite impressed with it. I am interested in this project if I could could reserve one with a stacked birch handle.

Thanks for posting this thread.
