liner lock vs frame lock vs lock back BHQ video

I love BladeHQ but that video is entertaining, arbitrary, unscientific and meaningless.

Tell us how you really feel. ;)

Good candidates for lock strength tests are the Spyderco Sage series if someone can afford the "destructive" tests. Hopefully, not too soon since we should see new Sage folders with Compression & Button locks to accompany the current liner lock, frame lock, bolt action lock and back lock. These are extremely well made small folders and it evens the scientific playing field.

I think the test does provide conclusive evidence of what most all ready should know. That knife locks can and will fail when abused. Unfortunately it doesnt prove much more than that. In the real world your wont see a real world advantage of a lock that survies 150lbs of force or one that takes 380. And if you do you probably arent using the knife as intended. Its like lining up a ferrari, lamborghini and Mclaren up and comparing their build quality by seeing how long each one would run before seizing after draining the oil.

You know, we can all view the exact same event and learn different things. Some of the things we learn might even be true.

What I learned was that a properly designed and manufactured knife, regardless of lock type, is stronger than I am. Nothing I do with a folding knife is going to even seriously inconvenience the lock.

OK, I learned to avoid Gerber and Boker, but I'm pretty sure I already knew that.

Ive never had an issue with the RAT 1 folder, I've just used it for slicing and cutting purposes..or for that matter the perfect lock every designed (to me) the Tri-Ad lock gives me all the lock protection Ive ever needed.

Reading Suntayas post reminded me of the 2 ARC LOCKs that failed me from SOG, one on a Flash2 and one on a Trident, I have an inch scar on my finger and have no feeling on the skin around it, and as far as CRKTs...yeah..Ive had an M16 fail even with the little safety locks engaged, and SOG said they've lab tested it to with hold 1.000 pounds of force or something? pshaw..too much beans.

Better candidates!

The compression lock holding up even after failing is seriously impressive even if it wasn't the strongest lock there.

And the Manix! Holy crap.
