Lionspy came today

Mine showed up today. It looks pretty good. The only complaint is that it has an uneven blade grind towards the tip. It's not real bad but is noticeable. Other than that it's great. It's considerably lighter than my Sr-1. I can see this one doing pocket time.

Will the Elmax blade fit or work in the sr1 handle?

I have no idea. I don't like taking apart a knife unless I really have to. I'm quite content with the blades where they are.

Hay maybe somebody has an answer to my question,

Is the LionSpy a sprint run or limited model or is Spyderco adding it as a permanent model?
I really like the rotoblock idea, even if not used much and I need an elmax steel bladed knife.

Its funny I just heard about the SR-1 and checked it out on the LionSteel website, but the fact that it has the Spyderco name on it also makes it that much more appealing.

Sorry to hear about all the complaints about the fit and finish, for an expensive knife like this I would expect it to be perfect everytime.

I'd been sort of pondering a SR-1 for some time, but when I heard about the LionSpy I decided to wait for it. Being pretty much into Spyderco, it seemed a logical combination for me.

When they started shipping, some of the comments had me a tad reluctant, but I bit the bullet and ordered one.
Showed up today and it is perfect! Cannot find a single fault with it (and I looked harder than I normally do).
Lock is a tad hard to disengage, but it is brand new after all. Plus I'd rather have one a little hard to disengage than too easy.

I'll show my ignorance about one thing. I have a couple of Elmax blades but I did not realize you could get as nice of a polish on the blade as the LionSpy has.

I have one coming through Tom Berry so hopefully when he gets some they will pass muster with him too because I'd rather not get a bad one at all. Even after all this wait. If it's going to get mucked up and costing as much as one does, I'd prefer I mucked it up

I'd like a SR-1, but I'd prefer smooth contoured handles instead of scalloped ones. It'd cut down on the machining costs and look nicer.

My M390 Military wasn't perfect (edge side jimping was funny looking, gaps between washers/scales), but figured the blade steel and CF was enough to make it a keeper/user for me.

It's in the catalog as a regular model but it's anyone's guess whether it will sell well enough to warrant additional production runs.

It should do well as long as it doesn't get a bad rep for fit and finish. I like mine. I have been carrying it for about a week and I don't find it to heavy in the pocket unlike the SR-1 which is a nice knife but a little on the heavy side.

I'm afraid all of the (unwarranted) negative hype surrounding this knife is ringing louder in the ears than the positive. There was one guy who had real, unexaggerated problems with his LionSpy. He had a reason to be concerned. Yet, out of his control, people started repeating that story and becoming hyper critical of the knife.

I have two. Are they perfect in every way? Nope, but show me a production knife (at any price) that is. I hope all of the BS surrounding this knife goes away and people start to see it for what it is.

Exactly my feelings as well.

Well said CTS! The LionSpy may not be for everyone and that's ok. I for one love it and think the materials and craftsmanship fall right in line with it's price point .

It's just that the frequency of knives with fit n finish issues that leave the factory had gone up substantially, IMO. I started noticing it with the Manix series..the orange had a bunch with blade play issues. M4 Manix had similar blade play problems as well as uneven edge grinds. 20cp para2's also had those issues plus dirty g10. The military m390 had a few with problems..one of the two I had had terribly uneven edge, centering, and blade play. These knives aren't getting any cheaper. And now the lionspy, priced on average, twice or three times as much as the knives coming out of Taiwan that come pretty much flawless, are also showing these same issues...minus the lock up of course, that I feel couldn't come any more perfect.

I still love spyderco through and through, I just feel like their qc has gone down in the last year or two

I definitely feel like the QC is slipping. Golden's QC, at least. The Japanese/Chinese/Taiwan models have been consistently great for me. I live near a HUGE knife store, so I get to handle multiples of pretty much every model Spyderco makes. I am sad to say that I have noticed the same trend. The Golden models just aren't as well made as the foreign ones.

I really, really hate to say that, but I promised myself I'd never be blinded by fanboyism. I actually made a thread on this very subject a long time ago, and I had many people agreeing with me. It doesn't seem like much has changed since then though.

I've noticed two trends in the past few months: Benchmade's QC is improving greatly, and Spyderco's QC is slipping. (again, the Golden models) I sincerely hope it changes. I really do. Spyderco is definitely my top production knife brand overall, so I'd really hate to quit buying the USA made models because it turned into a crap shoot.

It should never feel like a luck of the draw when it comes to buying golden, co. made knives, or any knife for that matter, at this price point...which to me, has been that way

John,
Sent you a PM regarding actually sending the N5 into Sal so he could personally look at it himself. Have you sent that in yet? And, I have seen your Spyderco collection, on youtube, so I am wanting you to qualify why you think QC is slipping. Specifically; given what you know and what knives you own, is this sample enough to make a definitive statement or is it merely conjecture. What I am trying to say is this: I understand you don't like what you apparently see, but I get the sense that your critical statments of Spyderco are just that. Critical and not constructive by any means. I will go so far as to suggest, conjecture if you will, that your motive for stating such things over and over, has drawn my attention at least. It feels like a railroading, not saying that it is. Again, based on your limited information and "smallish" Spyderco collection: are you qualified to keep dog-piling the subject of QC. If you have other information, please share it with us and enlighten us.
Thanks
p.s. I don't want to dog pile on you but...

Clarification?

Buy some knives.... As far as me "railroading" Spyderco, I suggest you look at post #51.......

ETA: I won't post further on the matter. I've said my piece. Anything else I feel I need to say I will say to Sal at blade. We talked a little about QC last time.

@JRAmmon i dont think it's just CTS that have noticed these issues with the qc. In my experience, I've bought multiples of every sprint that has come out in the last year and a half. Every sample I've had we're all differen, some would be perfect and others would have problems. Given the prices, these problems are a bit disappointing.

Most recent example is the m390 military. The first one I got came perfect. Smooth action, centered blade, no blade play and near even edge bevel. The second one was way off centered and had some slop when closed. When opened, it had side to side play, which was fixed by tightening the pivot, but only resulted in even more off centering when closed; and due to the slop when it was closed, would just about touch the liner when opening. Edge bevel was also way off.

Mine wasn't the only case..some reported of scratches on the blade, lockbars that barely made contact with the tang, and generally rough action.

Just got mine today and all is Perfect. One thing I notice about this one though is the removal from the pocket. This is one of the hardest knives to take out of your pants. That little clip has some serious tension. I would imagine that a small lanyard or something to grab on to would alleviate the issue. Anybody else find it hard to pull from the pocket?
