Arkansas Custom Knife Show
The show will be held February 22-23, 2014 in the Robinson Center Exhibit Hall located at the corner of Markham and Broadway (424 West Markham) in downtown Little Rock. It is adjacent to the DoubleTree Hotel which is the host hotel for the show. The DoubleTree’s phone numbers are: local (501) 372-4371, toll free (800) 937-2789. A block of rooms have been reserved for the show. Call and reserve your room by January 29th to get the show rate of $112 for single/double, $122 triple or $132 quad. Ask for the Ark Knife Makers block of rooms and the show rate. If you book online the code is AKM.

Registration
The table packets will be available at the reception table in the hotel ballroom Friday night or at the registration table early Saturday morning in the exhibit hall. Set up can begin as early as 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Suppliers can unload behind the building at the rear of the exhibit hall. Name badges will be printed. Email arknifeassn@yahoo.com with the name of each person that will be at your table. Show times this year for the general public are 10-5 Saturday and 10-3 Sunday. VIP’s can enter at 9:00 a.m. both days so plan to be at your table by then.

Friday Night Reception
There will be a reception Friday night in the DoubleTree Ballroom on the second floor. The door will open at 6:00. Each table holder will receive two free entries at the door. Extra guests are $30 each. This is planned as an opportunity for makers to invite their clients and collectors to mingle and have a good time. A cash bar will open at 6:00 p.m. Food will be served at 7:00 p.m. Burr King has donated a single speed Burr King grinder that will be given away to a lucky table holder Friday night. Tom McGinnis, a Burr King dealer that arranged the donation has offered to upgrade the grinder to a variable speed with stand at his cost if the winner chooses to. We plan to give away several other nice door prizes Friday night also. Please consider donating an item if you can or solicit items from vendors or businesses you deal with.

RSVP
Please RSVP to me if you will attend the reception and how many guests you will have by February 10, 2014 so we can plan for adequate food and seating. Send to arknifeassn@yahoo.com

Saturday Night Reception/Antique Bowie Exhibit
The Historic Arkansas Museum will have an exhibit of antique bowie knives on display from December 13, 2013 until June 22, 2014. It is located at 200 E 3rd Street, Little Rock, AR 72201, only 5 blocks from the DoubleTree and Robinson Center. We will have a reception at the museum on Saturday night, February 22nd so that table holders and collectors can view the exhibit. It will last from 5-8 p.m. Snacks and drink will be served. Over 200 knives will be on display loaned by several collectors. Teddy Roosevelt and Davy Crockett owned two of the knives. Five knives were made by James Black in Washington, AR in the 1830’s. One of these was made for Rezin Bowie. This will be an impressive exhibit curated by Knife World editor, Mark Zalesky. Mark will speak about it during the Friday night reception.

Security
Security will be provided in the room both days during the show and all night Saturday night.

Parking
Parking is available to hotel guests in the city owned parking deck located beneath the DoubleTree. Doors lead directly from the second level of the deck into the exhibit hall. It has been free in the past but the corporate world says it will be $7.50 per night now. It’s still a bargain compared to other show venues. This is the best location to park even if not a hotel guest. The parking fee is worth the convenience.

Auction Knives
The Arkansas Knifemakers Association will have a silent auction of knives or nice knife related items donated by makers on a table near the front entrance. We would greatly appreciate any donations for the auction. Proceeds benefit the AKA and the show. Pictures of donated knives are sent to the magazines. Many members and tableholders in past years have donated smaller or less valuable items for door prizes. Please consider doing so again for this show.

Give Away Knives
Give away knives were made and donated by Lee Ferguson, Bill Kirkes, Brion Tomberlin, Jerry McClure and James Scroggs. They will be given away at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon of the show. These knives will be displayed near the front of the room during the show along with a sign that states that each person that buys a knife at the show will receive a card from the seller to fill out for a drawing at the end of the show. It’s important that each maker fill out only one card for each knife sold and give to the buyer so they can be eligible for the drawing. The cards must be legible and must be signed by the maker to be valid. The cards will be in your packets. It very well could improve sales.

Judging
Judging for the above awards will be during the Friday night reception by the table holders in attendance. Tables will be set up at the back of the ballroom with a sign for each category. Each maker is encouraged to bring up to four knives to enter in the categories of your choice. Have them in the room by 6:30. Judging will be from 6:30 until 7:30. Winners will be announced about 8:00. Each table holder will receive a ballot when entering the room. Review each category and write the name of the maker that you think has the best knife in the appropriate blank. Then write the maker’s name that you feel has the best knife in the room in the “Best of Show” space.

Photography
Chuck Ward will be taking digital photographs of all auction and award winning knives. He will be set up both days in the same room as last year to the right of the hospitality room and will be available to take photos of any and all knives for a reasonable fee. Photos of auction and award winning knives will be sent to the major knife publications, Knives Annual and will be posted on the AKA website. Award winners will be responsible for taking their winning knives to be photographed on Saturday or Sunday at no cost.

Hospitality Room
We will have our usual hospitality room in the same location as last year with coffee, water, soft drinks, cookies and pastries. The room is limited to use by members and tableholders and their guests and clients. This room is very nice and convenient for members and tableholders but is also very expensive to keep stocked. A donation box will be available to help offset some of the cost. We hope to have sandwiches and salads available near the show room at lunchtime both days prepared by the DoubleTree Hotel catering dept.

VIP Passes
Five VIP and fifteen show passes are included in this mailing. Give the VIP passes to your best customers and the show passes to the rest of your clients. VIP passes can enter the show room at 9:00 a.m. each day.

Arkansas is a lot of fun . . . but not in the cards for me (again) this year. I am going to move heaven and earth to try to get back in 2015. Looks like I may only make one major show this year after attending four last year. I hope someone will post some pictures and a write-up for those of us who can't make it.

Here's one I will have (it will be finished by Feb 22 ;)). I don't know about Arkansas, but in Texas most folks would call this a paring knife. ;) :D

Lookin real good Mr Wheeler. I think in Arkansas they might call it a toothpick.

What wood are we looking at there?

Seth

Great to see some more blades. Nick, I know that will be killer. Don, that already is.

Nice Nick.
Great looking folder Don, very nice.
Hope you have a few blades left for us pedestrians to peruse?

FYI this is the most current list of table holders. This can change at any time. There will be a chart of table holders and table numbers at the entrance desk at the show. If we make it up right now, it wont be accurate due to probable changes between now and then.

Paul Long should be on the list. Our apologies Paul.

This list will always be in flux and will be changing right up to the very hour of show opening. But we will surely attempt to include everyone who will be there.

Here's a fighter that I will have at the show. I wanted to give this one a slender, fast blade with something out of the ordinary so I gave it a little different style of ring guard. Probably not for all tastes but it was fun to work on.

The blade & guard are from a laddered "W". The handle is a nice piece of Afzelia Lay.
