Local knife sharpening service just butchered 3 of my knives.

Yea well it's too late for that. It was certainly my mistake for thinking this guy or any service would treat these knives with finesse and love.
....

Most sharpening services are used to working on cheap kitchen knives where grinding away large chunks of the knife is their normal routine. There is still plenty of life left in those knives. Now that the new has been decidedly knocked off the knives, you can relax, use and enjoy them.

I just called GEC and spoke to Bill who was awfully nice and he told me to send it in and they'll see if anything can be done. It's worth a shot.
That right there is the best thing I have heard!:thumbup: to Bill at GEC. Best of luck to you Ribeye, this thread made me sad...

my condolences too, i hope GEC can help you...very bad "service" from jose...i recommend the combination fällkniven DC3 or DC4 (for nicks and reprofile) with DMT Dia-Sharp Extra Fine Card (to get it from dull to razor sharp) , easy and quick, you can take it everywhere, i use that combi for all my pocket knives...for perfect sharpness in addition a small piece of leather and polishing compound...

Sorry to see this result! Man, the knives are completelly messed up. I doubt that you can repair it on your own with any sharping system (except using power-driven-ones) - unless you have days of time.

But I think the Barlow will be good when getting a reblading treatment at GEC. The Schrade is a pitty, indeed.

I never made a similar experience, and hopefully never will. But use your own technique (stones, Sharpmaker, Lansky or whatever) - avoid these gentleman that propably can hardly handle any good and well HTed steel.

Unprofessional, useless moron! IF I had taken a tool there and got that I'd have gotten shirty to say the least!

And although we look and week, they are serviceable . albeit not what you or we would have wanted but a lesson learnt, right?

Keep using them, and give that fool an earful!

(I sharpen and refurbish tools for a living, and I do my job properly! So this hurts my trade and frustrates the knife collector in me!)

Condolences mate.
Never seen something like that...that's horrible and I can't imagine being in your shoes

Wow he killed your knives! I would be so pissed and heart broken about this. Sorry for your loss :(

Ridiculous. I know you're engaging in hyperbole, but it's just a knife.

kamagong, I'm relieved that you understood my comment to be hyperbole. Yeah it's just a knife, but it does not appear that it's just any old knife to the OP. If you can view all of your knives as tools to be used then more power to you. Personally I have some heavy users, some that get light use only and some safe queens that admittedly I do treat like some sort of precious artifacts and damage to any of them might elicit a variety of sentiments. I buy a lot of users partly due to value and partly due to the fact that they are no longer pristine and I have no qualms about putting them to use. To each his own, I suppose, as ridiculous as they may appear to the next guy.

Man that sucks. I can understand having a nice knife and and messing up on it though. Especially when I started freehand sharpening sometimes I overground blades or introduced recurves. Heck on my nice #85 I recently posted I unintentionally introduced a small recurve. Fortunately it was small and I was able to work it out, but I removed more steel than I liked. Typically these "professional" knife sharpening services especially when not run by a knife enthusiast, chef, or someone who frequently uses knives won't understand when you're disappointed or how removing so much steel is bad. On another note the mistake is not trusting some "Jose" with broken english. Plenty of capable foreign knife sharpeners out there. The issue was trusting a source from which you have never used before nor seen examples or feedback of. If you don't mind shipping your knives out we have some great professional sharpeners on this forum and real helpful guys. Jason B in my signature helped me a ton with sharpening advice and I have used his service in reprofiling a knife when I was still learning. richard j is another well known fella who can do the job. I hope GEC can replace the blade for you. Being in your shoes would make me very angry and agitated. :thumbdn:

We were taught in scouts how to sharpen.
However, yard sale knives I would take to a distant
relative to sharpen with a belt grinder from the 60's
he had. And I would get tomatoes and peppers when in season
from his garden. My sharpening is all by hand, and to put
a new grind on freehand is a bit daunting. Now that Russell
has passed on, I just keep sharpening by hand when I have the time.

Seriously sorry for you and your knifes, I would be pissed off too! A truly tough lesson learned!

At least I still have my Bullnose, Sheepsfoot Barlow, and newly acquired Fremont Jack. I'm thankful for that but I'm still going to use the other knives. I'll see what GEC says and maybe I can get Spyderco to level it off a little. As far as the Old Timer, I'm glad he didn't try to sharpen the sheepsfoot and spey.

Oh, that poor Old Timer. When it comes to a grinding wheel on a knife, Dave Barry's classification of power tools seems appropriate here:

"Tools that nobody should ever use because the potential danger is far greater than the value of any project that could possibly result."

Sharpening came part and parcel with knife hording to me, and I found it to be both rewarding and relaxing. It's a real shame that happened to your knives but it may lead you down the path of honing happiness.

Same. I enjoy sharpening and honing. I find it rewarding.

I love freehand sharpening. It's relaxing, and quite easy to do once you get the hang of it, but it's an invaluable skill to have as a knife collector. Whenever I see the product of an idiot with a belt grinder and a nice knife, I die a little inside. Never trust those really shoddy sharpening services, I've never seen any good come from it.
