Lone Wolf Project: Post All Your "Experiments" Here

El cuchillo and jackknife,

So are you only going to use one knife for a year, or just carry one for the year?

jackknife, I don't believe I have the fortitude of you and our friend El Cuchillo, but I applaud your combined efforts! When home in Texas, I do find myself picking up my old carbon Schrade 34OT and putting it in my pocket more than any other pocketknife I own! In fact, I inadvertently left it behind this trip over here, and I find myself missing it tremendously! I guess, de facto, it has become the "one" pocketknife I am using!

Hey Chris, just one knife for a year. ElCuchillo is going to use nothing in the way of a pocket knife but his peanut for 365 consecutive days, if possable, and I'm not going to use anything but my Buck cadet for equal time. The cadet is going to be my sole pocket knife to see how our dad's got by with only one.

Uhm, to to answer your question, Chris, like Jackknife said, it will be just my Peanut for one year. If I am at a friend's house, let's say, or visiting the in-laws and we have dinner, and they give me a steak knife for my steak, of course I'll use it. However, in my pocket, for the day to day chores we all come across, it will just be my Peanut.

Call me a lemming, but simplifying is something I am always striving for, so count me in. Case Medium Stockman, amber bone, damascus.

I went a lot of years with nothing but a Schrade 123OT Pioneer, and then with an SAK Climber - pretty sure I can handle this.

There are times a one-handed opener sure is nice, but I've found that by thinking/planning ahead a little more, I can get the job done just as well with one of my slipjoints. Maybe some of that jackknife ingenuity is starting to rub off on me. :-)

so I'm going to take the one year challenge that several others have embarked upon I'm going to choose a stockman I'm just not sure which one My case large stockman in cv is by far the toughest but is too big for edc...my schrade usa UH is awesome but stainless steel ( i prefer carbon) and the last is my boker which is my current edc nice carbon blades great look, no blade play at all, but it doesn't feel as strong as the others I have several great stockman of varying sizes but I think 3 7/8 - 4 inches closed is ideal for both edc and field use.. My plan is th use the spey for whittling the sheepsfoot for cutting (utility) and the clip for food... my terms are as follows I will choose 1 knife for the next year...and use it exclusively..I will allow myself the use of other tools can openers screwdrivers etc. and when camping I will bring a tool for cutting wood...if my knife should break of mechanically fail however I get to replace it.
Now are you guys going to use your choices for kitchen duty as well or are we allowing kitchen knives?

I'm not planning on using my pocket knife for kitchen duty if I'm in my own kitchen. That's what the rack of Forschner/Victorinox kitchen knives are for.

What I am planning, is to use my pocket knife for pocket knife type jobs, like dad and granddad did. If I do go camping or hiking, I will have my usual sheath knife along, (carbon laminated mora or old Buck woodsman) or a folding saw. All other jobs will be handled by the lone 303 cadet. If Andy could do it, I can at least try.

Jeez, look what ElCuchillo started! Well, if we're gonna have a revolution I better go see how I look in a black beret.

There's three threads going on this now. Maybe an admin can roll them together. I'm in.It's my Mooremaker for the rest of the year. I carried nothing but a case 63032 stockman for several to ten years.

Seems like the buffalo horn scratches up fairly easy. I am interested in the stand up of time with it. I have no doubt that the strength of the knife and blades will do well.

Same here, JK. If I am at home and eating dinner, of course I will use my kitchen/dinner utensils. If I am at work and there is a can opener near by, then the can will be opened with that. I am just using my knife for pocketknife duties. I've just always felt I needed my SAK in one pocket, my Leatherman on my belt, and a different pocketknife a day to really feel prepared, but the fact is I DON'T use my multitool everyday. I DON'T use the tools on my SAK everyday. I DO use a knife everyday, and for anything that I normally encounter, my Peanut is usually up to the task, and in case it isn't, then I'm gonna have to think outside the box and use some ingenuity. Those were the two main goals of my personal experiment, to see if I can get by using just my pocketknife, and to force myself to have to learn to use my head should the situation require me to.
Welcome aboard, Riley.

I admire the Experiment, but I don't think I can easily give up the utility of a multitool after edcing one for a number of years now.

Jackknife & El Cuchillo... I'm going to shave my head to show my support for you guys :D:D.

As a side note... Jackknife has been curtailing his knife purchases for sometime, but with El C out of the competition, well, that's all the more for the rest of us to buy ;).

Good luck and best wishes:thumbup::thumbup:

That was my main concern, too Foilist, but then I figured it's only a year out of my life. I'll survive. Once I;m done I can swim in all my tools and knives if I want, but for now, this is it.

LOL. Good point, malextwo. Better buy them up while you can, cause come January 13th, 2009, I am going to go BUCK WILD!!!

likewise. I only plan to use my peanut for everyday stuff.

I LOVE it. I think we have a chance to really have a fun year.

El cuchillo, thanks for getting this rolling.

Brett

Well, the first day has gone quite well.

Here are some things I used my peanut for today:

1. opened 10 or so packages
2. sliced a pear and an apple
3. scraped some stuff off of some chair legs in the cafeteria I run
4. cut open my mail

thought I would share.

Brett

Yoose guys are caraaazzy.

Please be sure to keep a runnin' diary or a blog so we can read your success's and your failures.

Looks like interestin' readin' already.:thumbup::D

Alright, guys, I started this experiment for myself, to test my discipline, to learn to use my noggin more, and to see how far minimalism can take me. It was strictly a "soul searching" type thing, to grow and better myself, but I see quite a few have wanted to jump on the bandwagon, which is very cool. Whatever reasons you may have for taking your own walk, it's good to have friends to travel with. However, as someone pointed out, there are three threads dealing with this experiment, which I guess might be taking up some romm here in the forum, so i have decided, for simplicity's sake, to call this experiment the Lone Wolf Project, since I will be using only one knife, and I figure it would be easier to post updates and comments on here. Also, if anyone else feels compelled to join in on this insanity (ONE KNIFE? FOR A YEAR? We MUST be insane), they can post here as well.
So, if it;s ok with the admins, here we go!!
