I have had a request for a knife similar to what Gus carried in the mini series "Lonesome Dove". I vaguely remember him with a knife but sure can't recall enough to draw up something similar. I've searched the interweb with no luck. Does anyone have a picture or link to someplace I can find one of this knife?

Thanks in advance,
SDS

Ask the person who is requesting it to draw it as they see it, or provide you a picture!! Can't help otherwise.

But it's a good idea to get the client's impression. He might be thinking of Pee's bowie, for all one knows.

Lonesome Dove

In what is perhaps the finest western TV mini-series ever made, the character of Gus McCrea portrayed by Robert Duvall will forever live in the memories of thousands of western fans. A while ago I was asked to reproduce the holster, belt, bullet pouch and knife sheath worn by Gus for a major magazine article, which led me to make a careful study of this wonderful production in detail from start to finish.

It is interesting to note that McCrea preferred to use his old Colt Walker pistol and a very worn brown leather cross draw holster, but his gun belt (with famous Texas Star buckle), military bullet pouch and knife sheath were finished in black.

My LONESOME DOVE, Gus McCrea, rig is a faithful reproduction of the Hollywood outfit and a neat rig to wear to western film fairs and cowboy action shooting events.

The holster is designed for use with the Colt Walker pistol but can be modified for us with a Colt 1851 Navy,1860 Army or Colt SAA if so ordered.

Gus's Gunbelt

Property Master Eric Williams and his crew was responsible for the great mass of props employed in Lonesome Dove—the saddles, bridles, guns, bows, arrows, belts, gear, and bedrolls used by the characters.

Gus McCrae’s replica Walker Colt and knife, on display at the Southwestern Writers Collection.

Thanks guys! I'll have him draw up what he thinks he saw too but being able to look at the images myself will help me.

That Green River butcher knife is what I thought it was. He has something completely different in mind that he says he saw. I is trying to find a screenshot of it for me but described it as more of a short/stubby bowie style clip blade. Not what I've seen from what I've been able to find. Might have to watch the series again to see if I can figure it out.

Yeah, I just watched it again last week, along with the new mini-series, Texas Rising, also very good.

There's two scenes that show the knife very clear. One is when he's being chased by Blue Duck's renegades, and he kills his horse by stabbing it in the neck. The other is toward the end, when he and Pea are pinned down by the indians, and Gus hands Pea his knife to cut the arrow out of his leg. It's definitely a pretty plain wood handle butcher pattern knife.

Cool post SAK Guy  I've never seen Lonesome Dover! Going to have to track it down

Aw man, Jack! Buddy. This is maybe the most iconic western ever filmed. It actually captures all the flavor of Larry McMurtry's book, which is rare for a Hollywood movie made from a contemporary writer. Add in a stellar cast, and you have hours of movie magic to keep you occupied.

Jack, look at me, this is serious. You need to go track down a copy or find it on netflix, or something. Then clear your calendar for a day or two and wade into it. It ranges from funny, to profound, to tragic. Not just your run of the mill John Wayne western.

I always thought of the Russell Hunter (top) as a Green River version of a cowboy knife. :D
