Lonesome Dove, Gus' knife

Best movie EVER made as far as I'm concerned. Makes me want to sit up all night and read the good book then make biscuits in the morning.

And talk to pigs too. I have the entire series on CD and when I start playing it my wife and son (named Augustus, btw) just roll their eyes.

Agree, best movie ever made. I'm going to have to watch it again now and look for Gus's knife!

The only other mini-series that even came close was the Pasquinel section of Centennial.

Robert Conrad made a great "Hivernant"

Gents, this is a knife forum. Please post appropriately.

I watched it for the first time years ago, and thought it looked just like an Old Hickory butcher knife. Gus was a childhood hero of mine, and I wanted to have a knife like his, so that's what got me into using Old Hicks as outdoors knives. I started sewing leather sheaths for them and carrying them camping and fishing and such. Gus and his knife made a big impression on me back then and I still love it.

Two of my Old Hickories, one of which looks a lot like Gus's knife. (To me at least)

One day I'll have to get the real deal just so I can say I have it

In the book, which you should also pick up Jack Black, I'm talking to you buddy, I believe that Gus had a clasp knife?

I can't abide rudeness in a man.

Look up epic in the dictionary, it will direct you to Lonesome Dove.

One of my fathers favorite quotes is "I whack that damn bell if I want to".

Thanks Dan, I found a store the second and third parts, but not the first! Earl was disappointed. Think I'll order them online. In the meantime, I've taken Earl for a sneaky pint to console him ;)

One more thing Dan, do you think it would be better to read the book first, or doesn't it matter?

And it stars Diane Lane, whose knife is as sharp as Angelica Houston's.
I like Woodrow's knife, though Gus's is probably more practical.
I don't think it matters much whether you do the book or the movie first.

so it looks like those ridges in the blade are stamped in. Does this give the knife extra strength by making extra spines?

Believe those are remnants/stamps left on the steel sheets by the factory cold rolled forge rollers. Washington Forge's ForgeCraft blades had the same type stamp/marks.

I like the scene where Captain Call "Can't tolerate rude behavior in a man."

Aside from this, are there any other noteworthy knives in the movie? How about Po Campo around the chuckwagon?

Thanks my friend
