Great work, Al - can't imagine how long it took to find, assemble and post all those great screen shots. OTOH, there aren't many more enjoyable pastimes than sitting down to watch Lonesome Dove. Many Thanks.

I may be wrong about this but in my couple of readings of the book I seem to remember mention of him carrying a sodbuster.

The Green River knives are great. I've owned a few and built a couple from kits as well.

I'm a New Mexico resident and native, so I love the landscapes in those photos. If you haven't been here, you should come visit the state, especially if you're a Lonesome Dove fan.

I have some great memories of traveling down and across NM by motorcycle on my own several years ago. Came across at Hobbs on US 180, went to Carlsbad Caverns then spent the night in Artesia by the federal law enforcement academy to see some friends. Headed west through Cloudcroft (gorgeous vistas) and made my way down to Alamogordo, White Sands, Las Cruces and spent the night in Lordsburg before crossing into AZ on the way to Globe and many other locales.

Have ridden down to Taos (and environs) from CO several times over the years as well.

I guess I'm just trying to say I agree. The people and topography of NM are strongly anchored in my memory.

Thanks Jack!!!!! Lonesome Dove is Epic!!! You must watch it!

I always thought of the Russell Hunter (top) as a Green River version of a cowboy knife. :D

Is that top Russell Hunter still available anywhere? I like the looks of thet one.
I pawed around the Dexter-Russell site and the only Hunter I saw looked nothing like that one.

This has be a great thread on so many levels.

Wonderful project, brought the whole magnificent series back to me. Thanks for your fine work.

Andrew

I watched it for the first time years ago, and thought it looked just like an Old Hickory butcher knife. Gus was a childhood hero of mine, and I wanted to have a knife like his, so that's what got me into using Old Hicks as outdoors knives. I started sewing leather sheaths for them and carrying them camping and fishing and such. Gus and his knife made a big impression on me back then and I still love it.

Two of my Old Hickories, one of which looks a lot like Gus's knife. (To me at least)

One day I'll have to get the real deal just so I can say I have it

Beautiful!

What is the top knife (pattern/number)?

I read Lonesome Dove long ago, and really enjoyed it.

I tried again recently after hearing so many of you here rave about it, and got too goldang thirsty to continue for long. Also bored.

AL - Well done sir! That was great to see!

I wonder if I am the only one who is about to start watching it again. :D

Awesome post guy s!! I'm a huge Lonesome Dove fan. I've seen the series and read the book many times. In the book it says Gus carried " a plain old clasp in his pocket and used mostly for cutting his toenails.''
Great work on the Gus rig SAK.
Love the picture of Deets toothpick. Been trying to find one like it for awhile but no luck.

Thanks and you're welcome GT, Berkley, SAK Guy, Gevonovich, Andrew, Brett, David! I've watched Lonesome Dove so many times that it didn't take long to find the scenes and then the frames I was looking for.
