Long term grid down scenario, which folder do you choose?

Most of my folders are of the office-friendly EDC variety, so I'm as likely to "bug out" with my Gerber Gator as anything. It's not my most versatile or toughest folder, but I really can't think of a downside. I have an Adamas folder on the way, but don't have it in front of me yet, so I can't say for sure, and as much as I like my Recon 1 tanto, well . . . it's a tanto.

You can always sharpen blades on frosted glass or on the bottom of a ceramic mug... I'm sure ceramic fragments will be not be very scarce
Why would benchstones disappear? Did the entities that took all our knives except for one folder take those too? Along with all non animal fat derived oil?

I dont get it.

I know, but if all the benchstones went away, why not glass and ceramic too? Clearly the conditions in this post-apocalyptic world are pretty out there!

Anyway. I'm sticking with the multitool. Though I still wanna see if I can get away with slapping a couple slabs of wood and some rivets on on a fixed blades tang and call it a friction folder. I mean, what is a friction folder but exactly that? :D

but but but... i mean it kinda folds. Right? :D

I kind of agree with the multitool/sak thing. Why settle for a knife when you can have all those other goodies as well. I think the roman legionaries carried something very similar to the SAK on their campaigns and it worked for them. The only problem with using a SAK or multitool for everything is they get gunked up in hard to reach places. Once that happens hygiene gets compromised. Food prep will still be the #1 thing I use my knife for.

My Tuff, SmF, or Mini Manix would all work fine.
But I still wouldn't be prying manhole covers (who want to get into the sewer, anyway?) or breaching doors.
In the grim, dark vision of hell which is apparently our future (for some reason), I'm sure there'll be plenty of wreckage to hurl through windows...which I'll do, and then I'll have a nifty breaching axe. :)
And a gun.
And a pry bar.
(and some canned food, a barbeque, prescription pills, etc.)

I would need something light, easy to sharpen with a thin enough grind to cut stuff effectively....that would be my BM 940. I will improvise tools to do any prying, etc.

While many people don't like sharpening recurves, they are great with partial serrations in the recurved part of the blade.

For sharpening, use a leather belt as a makeshift strop. For sharpening serrations, use a leather bootlace as a strop. This works nicely on a gut-hook as well.

I had definitely taken into consideration the combo edge taking the place of the recurve since I do not like recurves....yet I have been noticing lately that on models like the Shallot and Blur if there were serrations my sharpening troubles would be minuscule.

I had not thought of the leather belt or leather boot laces, fantastic for the scenario at hand!

That combination has made me give some serious consideration to grabbing an Emerson for BOB along w a spare leather belt and laces, both of which could come in handy for their original purpose as well if they weren't available or on your person at the time whatever it was that caused the scenario occurred.

This is why threads like this rock. :)

I've live off grid in the Olympic Rain Forest and have for many years. My power comes from solar panels -- including the power to run this computer and bounce my communications off a satellite drifting very high somewhere over the equator.

Life off grid is not that difficult. There is power everywhere. (I have wind power, too.)

One folder? Probably my Sebenza or Military M4 or Rukus or Manix (real Manix) -- something with a blade about 4 inches.

What does logic have to do with fantasy? :p

I'm still wondering why anyone would ever try to pry open a man hole cover with a folding knife or any knife for that matter.

I would try to barter this one away from Guyon !

:p

Large Sebenza for me.

What is that makers name?. I'd like to see more of his knives :)

Gavko, same guy talking in the video. He makes some pretty crazy thin blades. He has a short sword called Excalibur that chops wood like a lightsaber. It's unbelievable...

Because that was an example given in this scenario, regardless of wether or not it will happen the question at hand is which folder would you choose to accomplish this task.

It's quite obvious that a folder would not be a go-to. The OP went out of their way to create an atmosphere that took that discussion off the table. and while heavily elaborated on, the original question is crystal clear. Why can't these threads ever stay on topic? I'm still very interested in what other FOLDERS people would carry since my collection consists mostly of them. I am not a mod so this isn't my place but I would like this thread to stay open

I always wonder why the rest of us have to suffer in these fever dream situations? Why can't someone just ask what folder you'd take with you into the woods if you were planning to live off the land for the rest of your life (however long that lasts with just a folding knife in the deep woods). Why must there always be some kind of incredibly destructive scenario to semi-justify this adventure--one that is well worth having regardless of whatever is going on in the rest of the world?

I guess it's the drama. Some people need it.

Me, the folder of choice would be a folding chair. Then I'd sit comfortably under a tree, looking out over the south pasture while my solar panels power my well pump and the garden continues to produce while my cows continue to reproduce. And if I need a knife, I'll pull one out of my pocket or go inside and pick out a different one.

I feel reasonably sure that won't be a sexy enough answer. :(

Locking folder? Probably an emerson. G10 doesnt get as hot or cold as metal does (titanium framelocks). I dont know what kind of climate this end-of-days scenario will have and dont want to burn my hands everytime i use my knives. Plus its widely known that emerson runs his 154 soft for field expedient sharpening. This would be ideal in a situation where you wouldnt have a "high-speed" sharpening system.
More realistically, probably a slip joint or a friction folder. They have the proven track record to show that they last much longer than locking systems in knives. If i had no other weapons (guns, bows, swords, etc) id definately take the chances of having liners wear out eventually with an emerson. Hopefully by he time the liners wear out ive found a better weapon! If i do have a weapon already, then id go for the simplistic slip-joint or friction folder.

Then I would use the Spyderco folding manhole bar
