Long term project / test knife - bushfinger

Yep was thinking that -- I did some testing like this before when I was into training kali/silat. I'll hit the local butcher upon the next week or two as I was planning on doing a big BBQ mid august.

Well .. that was my reasoning. I just didnt want to come across as a sadist. lol. I figured with all the fiddleback/food pics, then some others might want to know how many porkchops they would slice thru before sharpening would be needed.

I'm sure you've seen the steel thread in the knife reviews forum. That's an excellent resource to compare steels and the test methods are elaborate, but maybe overkill for two like knives.

Thanks in advance for doing this. :)

Another good option, I would think, would be slicing cardboard. Although it might dull too fast, not really sure.

This was one of my favorite knives, I will be keeping an eye on your tests.

Why climbing rope? True kernmantle rope is not very abrasive. Have I missed something again? :foot:

I like that bushfanger. I've never owned one. Every time I see one up for grabs, a kephart shows up and I'm a sucker for Kepharts. This will be interesting. I love progressive threads.

Nope you're good; I had some coming prior to getting the idea to perform the test. I might grab some other utility rope (whatever's cheap / available) as well that is a bit burlier.

Excellent idea Will. Funny, I first fell for FBs when I saw pictures of the bushfinger, but I still haven't gotten one. Very much looking forward to your thoughts through various applications.

Sisal rope is a commonly used abrasive medium. I think HF sells it.

Cardboard can be a hard one because it sometimes contains clays and weird inclusions that can be inconsistent.

Rope followed by printer paper can be used well together.

Or... One time a guy wrote that he just bashes the edges of two knives together, whichever wins is the winner.

I hope he wasn't serious. :D

Ah yes, I am familiar with the method -- I planned on doing it before the tip-first batoning into knotty wood finale :D!

I'll be starting tonight after work, so look for some pics of mercilessly push-cut phone books! Rope, cardboard, pork, etc. will be forthcoming.

Just a teaser..

Had a client cancel and had a few free moments... looks like I am going to need some thicker phonebooks for tonight! This one was almost too easy at 450 pages ;). Of note both the control (stock edge BF) and the subject knife performed similarly, although the subject knife's highly polished edge required preceptably less pressure to cut.

How about meat filled boots?
