Long term project / test knife - bushfinger

Thanks guys -- I had hoped my buddy would be dropping off a bunch of cool stuff to cut up today, and while waiting for him to drop by, I started making a bunch of feathersticks to kill time. Somewhere along then line attention started to drift and the rest is history. Ironically when I had initially posted I had expected to have my materials sooner , but delays keep popping up, so I find myself doing (stupid) things to pass the time!

The test plan is broken into a few phases; I'm starting with edge retention through standardized materials, with my measure of effectiveness being the knifes ability to accomplish the battery of test cases without resharpening. Materials will include both organic and inorganic materials, typically encountered in a BC scenario. I have ten materials I plan on applying 100 cuts through; so we're looking at 1k cuts being made in this phase and addressing over all cutting performance and effectiveness of the blade shape in several different types of cuts.

The second phase will be more qualitative in a series of outings where the bushfinger will be used as the sole edged tool for food prep, fire building, and general BC activities. I'll try to get both video and pics for this phase, and the focus will be on task based suitability.

The third and final phase is TBD but might I'm thinking of doing a limited pass around to collect some additional community feedback.

Sorry to hear about your mishap hope it's not to serious Will.
Maybe you and Ken could compare war wounds. ;)
Cool thread mate.

Sorry for your mishap Will. But the man who says that he has never cut himself with a knife is a man who has never used a knife very much. Hell, I was watching Bobby Flay on a cooking show last night, and he cut himself with a knife.

Man sorry to hear about the accident Will, wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing some test photos.

Ah yes, I am familiar with the method -- I planned on doing it before the tip-first batoning into knotty wood finale :D!

I'll be starting tonight after work, so look for some pics of mercilessly push-cut phone books! Rope, cardboard, pork, etc. will be forthcoming.

Good for you Will. I look forward to seeing more of this thread and will follow it. :)

I had to quite this post of yours because it gave me a really good laugh. I like your style.
