Looking for a good Bowie

I would not like to try taking someone out at 200 yards with one. :( However, they do beat my fingernails if my mags are all empty.

Beats 4 years in prison for felon in possession ;)

Well Jack, your thread has convinced me that my next knife will be a Bowie. Since it seems you have decided to go with the Thor, I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions for myself.
I have a couple questions for the Bowie aficionados here.

I have a copy of a WW1 Bolo. It has a full tang 10.5" blade with a 4.8" saber grip handle south of the guard. Thickness is just shy of .25. I've included pics to show hand size. Don't know if it helps but what the hell. (It was 1am and I was bored)

I really like the looks of the BR 1909 Michigan Bowie but prefer a full tang blade if possible. When handling the Bolo I noticed that I wouldn't mind a little longer blade, 11-12".

So, after all that, here's my questions:

Any suggestions on blades with full tang and over 10"? AND
If I do decide to go with BR, has anyone tried the Moran handle? Seems like it might work well. If not, which handle shape is your favorite?

On a side note, the BR Vest Bowie Mod. A has my name all over it. Beautiful.

Becker Bk29 comes to mind when looking for a full tang, 10" blade.
Wow, definitely a capable knife. If I was looking for just a user, that would be great. I like the 20 even better but I am looking for something with a little more traditional styling.

Not sure if you are wanting to stay traditional, but if you're open to a more modern take on the bowie, Swamprat makes an M9 that is a great knife. They're a 'busse-kin' company, i.e. a sister-company to busse combat, and work with SR-101 which is a 52100 with their heat treat, and generally cost less than blades from the main company. The M9 is not in production at this time, however they still come up on the exchange here a few times a year and they don't break the bank. They are IMO a very underrated blade. It is the knife on the left in this picture and has a 9" blade.

Cold Steel 1917 Bowie,
12 inches, classic looks, classic sheath, beautifully blued carbon steel blade, full tang with riveted wooden handles

Blades don't run out of bullets...

True, was just looking through knife laws last night and I find it very ironic that Texas outlaws carrying a bowie.. My CCW is good in most states anyway

If you don't have a khukuri grab yourself one from HI, check the forums for a blem they are great knives and cheap.

I've very much enjoyed learning about Bowies and after tons of reading I've decided that yes I am going to grab myself a Fallkniven Tor, but beyond that I'm definitely buying a Randall next. Love the Raymond Thorpe Bowie, wondering if I should just put an order in to wait 5 years or keep my eye out elsewhere...

Very nice blade and I agree about Swamprat flying under the radar for some.

I'm thinking more traditional on this one. Researching a lot of customs right now but productions will probably fit my price range better. I have a goal of $400 or less with a $500 max. Seems a little low for long blade customs.

Nothing personal against Mr.Kohler, but I don't really think that i would put his Bowies in the same class as Bagwell or Hanson.
As a true fan ob Bowie styled fnives, my recommendations would be:

Low budget:
- Cold Steel Leatherneck
- KaBar
- Ontario SP1
- Ontario SP10
- Von Tempsky Bowie
- Cudeman Bowie
- Windlass 1880 Bowie
- Windlass Alamo Bowie
- Spyderco Fred Perrin

Mid budget:
- Cold Steel TrailMaster
- Al Mar Alaskan Bowie
- Cold Steel Laredo
- Cold Steel Natchez
- Ontario Bill Bagwell Bowie

High budget:
- Customs from Bill Bagwell, Don Hanson, Dark Timber, etc.
