Looking for a good Bowie

Here are my first impressions! Full review to follow. I opened up the box minutes before leaving it to go on a 4 day vacation, couldn't wait the entire time to get back and get a better feel for it.

The first thing I thought handling this beauty was "Wow this is light"

My roommate said the same exact thing, "Lighter than expected"

This is hands down the sharpest knife I've ever felt out of the box. It is razor sharp..

Can say I'm already not impressed with the sheath, while it seems to be an upgrade from the previous brown version it still falls short of what I want out of a sheath.

Full review to come tomorrow, I'll put it to work a bit in the afternoon. The question is should I do it here or start a new thread?

Can you be more specific in what way the sheath falls short? Is it the cross-guard snap that allows some upward movement? The old sheaths also scratched the blade something fierce...

I have a Svörd Von Tempsky Forest Ranger Bowie on the way. Looking forward to testing it out.

Warning for political. Wrong forum for that.
Normally, I'm not overly concerned with country of origin, as I believe that a good knife can be made anywhere, but if you're buying a Bowie because you're an Amecian and want that piece of Americana, I'd suggest sticking with American made. Just seems contrary to your goal to look at imports.
Just remember Chinese producers don't sell to Chinese citizens, not sure if they ever will; the knife steel they use is composed of recycled dismantled American factories. The short term profits go to Lynn and others like him, long term profit goes to communist China's economic war machine. I'm proud to own knives from seki-city Japan, Maniango Italy, Sweden, etc. but even Taiwan is almost entirely certain to revert to Chinese control in the immediate future. Nothing against the Chinese people, but it won't be long before their fascist government sinks an American aircraft carrier, which won't be replaced because we can't afford the steel to build it.

LOL. Jim Bowie died at the Alamo, but the Bowie knife existed before he ever went to Texas, and there is no place called "Alamo Texas." The Alamo is in San Antonio, Texas.

As for where the knife originated, who knows. It become publicized after Bowie's infamous Sandbar fight, near Vidalia Louisiana.
I've heard someone call an rtak2 a "bowie," but I think we all know it's not

I don't know about the CS San Mai, but the Fallkniven accounts are all over the place, and well known.
I'm quite sure fallkniven pays the (same) factory more than cold steel does, so why the lower quality?

Perhaps, but how do you know they pay more? I don't know the figures, but I'm fairly certain CS sells many more knives and perhaps has a bigger budget. I would also guess CS and our friend Lynn has more experience dealing with foreign (Asian) foundries/manufacturers. Just guessing. ;)

I hadn't thought about that, guess I fell for Swedish Marketing again

That takes effect in September, 2 more months of stupidity if I read correctly

Actually, it becomes effective 01 September 2017. 01 September is the fiscal year start date in Texas.

For new Texas laws, unless special wording is included in a bill specifying a specific "effective date", the default date is always 01 September of the year the law was passed and signed. Even then, the 01 September start date is specified in almost all bills just to make sure that there is no ambiguity as to when the law takes effect.

The valid reasons for having an effective date other than 01 September is either because the law in question is in solution to a serious situation involving public safety or a medical emergency or the date is delayed to allow time to put the requirements of the law into operation. Other exceptions are when a Special Session is called. The laws coming out of a Special Session generally have a start date 90+ days after the Governor signs it, again, unless a specific date is identified due to circumstances.

You should get the gunfighter and let us know all about it.
:D

I don't have one so I can't comment on it.

However, I will say that I'm absolutely shocked & amazed that the Western W49 is still for sale on the BS&T... shocking I tell you.
Don't make me buy a second one!!!

Buy Sell & Trade.... generic name for the for sale spaces on forums.
Around here you'd be looking for Production knives for sale by individual...
And BTW, I have no connection to the seller at all...
Let's see if my new photo hosting works...

Yes I've decided to get that Gunfighter bowie, It should definitely be better that the wall hanger bowie I have from GIl Hibben and United Cutlery.

I really like the look of his gunfigher. Its like a custom version of the TOPS Prather War Bowie that I love so much. Also check out Dark Timber Knives

I will most likely not be In TX before September, but do you suppose the old law will be in effect until then, or would it be up to discretion of the ranger?

Old law will be in effect until 23:59:59, 31 August 2017.

At 00:00:00, 01 September 2017, the new law becomes effective.

The last sentence in the bill actually states that it becomes effective on 01 September 2017, to remove any ambiguity as to when it is effective.

That's only 45 days and a wake-up. :D

Looking forward to your review of the gunfighter. In my research of least a billion:) different Bowles and makers since this thread started, the Gunfighter is still top two.

The Prather Bowie design is near perfect for my wants.
I agree with the similarities to the Gunfighter.
I was thinking of trying to draw up something similar to the Prather style.

I agree that the SOG Super Bowie has an overly large handle. i reduced the size of mine and reshaped the index finger grip. way better now

You mentioned the SOG Super Bowie , i have one, unless you have overly large hands i would avoid it. I bought mine online, never got to paw it first, the handle is waaaay too big, much much bigger than the regular shorter Sog fixed blades. I have an old Western Bowie, an Ontario spec plus raider Bowie and a CS Trailmaster all of those have longer blades and smaller MUCH more ergonomic handles. Of those i'd go with the Trailmaster but the Ontario is good as well and less expensive. If i lost all my knives tomorrow i'd just buy a Kabar Becker BK7 or BK9. Seriously you can't go wrong with a Becker.
