looking for a good S30V folder...

The Buck Paradigm Pro is sort of like the Buck Vantage Pro on steroids. A bit pricier though and will likely run about $130.

So far I think towards:

1. Buck Advantage pro
2. Spyderco Paramilitary.

I will post some pictures when I get them.

Thank you all for good advice and informative posts!

Both very good knives, but very different. If you don't mind tip-down carry, the Para Military is a very nice knife. It does have a relatively short blade for the length of its handle. In fact, I think the Para & Buck Vantage Pro have "about" the same length blade. Buck specs say the Vantage Pro's blade is 3.25", but I believe the latest ones are around 3 1/8", which is around the same length as the Para Mili's.

Personally, the Vantage Pro is an incredible knife for the $.

Yes, agree...

This is a good blade length for EDC knife and "legal" in IL.
I ordered Buck already, so will play with it first and them move to the next knife... if it will be necessary :)

lone wolf long horn.excellent knife, for not a whole lot of money.

Which one did you decide on then?!?!?!

Treat yourself to a Benchmade 943 Osborne. The black handle is kind of drab, but the rest of the features make this knife sing. Versatile, ergonomic, quick to deploy, ambidextrous, many blade options, lightweight, in short a keeper.

I got a Kershaw Avalanche for $40. I'll let you know how it is when I get it :D

Kancler,

I have both the Buck Vantage Pro and the Spyderco Paramilitary. Superb knives both but different as you've already noted in this thread. I have a very high opinion of both and they do sit in my EDC box waiting for some pocket time.

I think you should decide if you're value shopping or going after a high-end knife! Your price range is broad and other than steel preferance, you've not narrowed the search criteria.

If your looking for value purchase in a S30V/G10 knife the Buck Vantage Pro is a clear winner.

I don't know if you are aware but the Paramilitary II just went on sale as a pre-order. There is a thread in the Spyderco forum that has a youtube video were Eric G. gives a little bit of a demo of the new knife. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=739791
For me, the new knife is an improvement and I'm already on preorder and I'm excited about it.

There is one other knife that you should seriously consider and that's the Spyderco Sage II. This is the knife I've been pocket carrying everyday for the last several months. Simply an awsome knife.

At the moment, I have a Sage II bobbing about with the change in my pocket, a Buck Vantage Avid clipped in the front pocket, and a Spyderco Military Ti clipped in the back pocket.

So I'd put the Sage II on the top of that list if your budget is on the high side and you want just one knife. I'd choose the Vantage Pro if you going to make a value purchase. But I don't think a knife guy should NOT have all three.;)

The Alaskan Guide Buck 110 (available from Cabela's)...

Or a S30V Buck 110 from Buck's own custom shoppe (for about $90.00 dollars)...

I have too many s30v knives to mention here. IMO, Spyderco processes this steel better all others.

I've also got a 940 and could recommend that to anyone.

However I barely ever carry it over my 930 Kulgera.

The 930 is less "utilitarian" in my eyes than the 940. The hardware on it has some ornate styliings ( can't really see from that pic ) and I like the design on the G10 over aluminum; I suppose you can get the 940 in a lot more configurations though.

They're about the same price, and very similar though, the big turn-off to most is the exposed liners. A lot of people just don't like the look, and some actually find it uncomfortable. so it's not really a knife I'd recommend to everyone just in case they don't like the feel.

To me the 940 is like an everyman's 930.

Anyway, I love them both. The AXIS lock is so convenient for one-hand opening and closing, and there's zero blade play at all. I'm not familiar with other company's like Spyderco yet, but Benchmade's warranty and LifeSharp services are also huge perks.

Buck Vantage Pro is a good choice, but you should have spent your whole budget.

Have fun with your selection. Do you have torx and such yet?
