Looking for a Knife for my Sister

Dragonfy 2 would be perfect, but it will break the $40 limit by just a bit. I'm a guy, but the Dragonfly is my favorite EDC by far

I'm trying to get my sister to start carrying a knife. I'm planning on getting her a knife for her upcoming birthday.

Here are my parameters:
-Under $40.
-Blade length under 3 inches.
-Has to have a pocket clip.
-Frame lock or lock back.
-Under 4 oz.

The two knives that I am currently looking at are the Cold Steel Tuff Lite and the Byrd Robin 2 with G-10 scales. Please provide feedback and suggestions.

I thought the tuff light had a blade larger than 3''? Maybe you're thinking of the CS counterpoint with exactly a 3'' blade? I have that knife and I really like it other than it is too slow to deploy. My issue is that I take out my knives a lot in public and I would rather have something "friendly" or "tool" looking. There are other cold steel knives that fit your parameters except maybe price range such as the mini ak47, mini recon1, etc.

Ontario Rat II (but has liner lock)

Buck Rival I 364 or Rival SS #363 (both back lock, very light)

Buck Vantage 340 (liner lock)

Another great choice: Ka-Bar Dozier, either the mini or the regular one. Both are amazing, and both are around 20 bucks. Incredible knives for the value. Light, capable, durable, not too big, and great back lock.

Get a Spyderco Ladybug. The 2" blade should be sufficient. Your sister can even put it on her key ring. If I were you, however, I'd up the budget for $20 more and get a Dragonfly 2.

Kershaw chive, 100% that thing is beautiful, you can snatch one alot cheaper on ebay in the auction tab

Pick out a knife you think is good.

Give it to her.

Odd, "will be used for stabbing SD" isn't on it.
It's good to ask ! ;)

The Tuff Lite is a great little piece, especially when you have sanded the hole down a bit.

Neither was opening boxes or slicing apples.

+1 on Spyderco Delica or kabar dozier or Rat 2 (if liner is ok)

Oh, you mean normal knife tasks? The sort that are implied by a knife matching what the OP was asking for?

Spyderco Ladybug in VG10, Ontario Rat in D2, Opinel No6-9 in Sandvik 12C27, or the Victorinox Swiss Army 4" Floral Knife (comes in handful of colors) in "Stainless Steel". Don't underestimate caring of the knife she gets, it should be as easy as possible.

“Normal knife tasks” is a relative term. The variety of knife uses is what makes it such a great tool. It might help if the op tells us what intended uses are. I did not see any implied use in the post and not sure how you did. Having two sisters, the main reason I would want them to carry a knife would be self defense. I figure if they needed to open a box or slice an apple, they could take the time to get a knife from a drawer, use scissors, ask me or someone else for a hand. Though the probability of needing a knife for self defense is much lower than mundane tasks, the severity is much higher. Either way, I would not assume one reason the op wants to buy his sister a knife over another. Heck... maybe she just needs to slice apples.

I bought my 15 year old daughter the pink KA-BAR Dozier folding knife for 20 bucks at AG Russells last year and she loves it.

May I ask what sort of training they've had? Presumably, since you desire that they see a knife as a weapon, they'll have had the commensurate training, correct? I mean, I figured that you would make sure they had, given that your expectation that one of their options if they actually need something cut would be to come ask you for a hand.

In case I wasn't clear, the OP clearly was not asking for a knife recommendation for a tactical role.

Try the Blade Tech Mouse or Ratel available from Blade HQ for ~$30. One of my girls has one and loves it, pocket or purse, it's a classic Tim Wegner design. Comes in pink some places, but not recently. The Mouse was once a Spyderco model.
