Looking for a Knife for my Sister

May I ask what sort of training they've had? Presumably, since you desire that they see a knife as a weapon, they'll have had the commensurate training, correct? I mean, I figured that you would make sure they had, given that your expectation that one of their options if they actually need something cut would be to come ask you for a hand.

In case I wasn't clear, the OP clearly was not asking for a knife recommendation for a tactical role.

Sure training would be ideal. But if my choice was my untrained sister would either have a knife or not have a knife during some kind of an attack/assault, I would want her to have a knife regardless of training... no brainer.

In case I wasn’t clear, there is no way of knowing why the op was asking for a knife recommendation. Maybe it is for a tactical role, maybe utilitarian, maybe a different reason, maybe all of the above.

Sooooo....under three inch blade, under 4 ounces? Oh yeah, definitely some serious sentry removal steel there, amirite?

Who said anything about sentry removal? BTW 9/11 was w/ box cutters.... sooooo yeah small blades can get the job done. No.

Maybe I am missing it, but are the requirements something she wanted or suggestions from the OP for a knife? I think you are limiting the choices a little, with just a slight tweaking, you can open it up for more possibilities. Not going crazy overboard and still stay close to your price range and requirements. Just my two cents.

Now, I would suggest your check out some of the knives from AG Russell. I like the 3 inch Gentleman's knife in carbon fiber and a VG10 blade.

The requirements are my own suggestions, the listed things are some of the things that I would look for in a knife.

I am 15 and she is turning 13. She has never carried a knife before and I am trying to get her to. She is always talking about having no pockets in her pants so I suggested that she could carry a knife inside the waistband. I told her that if she consistently carried my Cold Steel Mini AK that I would buy her a decent knife of her own. The knife is not intended to be for self defense.

I hope this clears some things up.

The Tuff Lite is still looking like a good option.

You continue to miss the point. It's clear to anyone who didn't want to beat the drum of "Buy a knife so she can stab someone" what the OP was asking. I'm sorry that you don't seem to grasp the fact. The OP was asking for opinions on two EDC knives for his sister. Ah well, you can lead a horse to water... Anyway, let's table this. The OP has made clear what he was looking for.

OP, I second the recommendation on a Cold Steel Tuff Lite. Nice, utilitarian blade. She'll be able to cut food, snip a thread off a shirt, scrape nail polish off her nails, remove tags from new things, open mail, covers all the bases. It comes in a variety of colors, and of course, has the Triad backlock. Really can't go wrong.

Yep, pretty much exactly what most of us grasped, given your parameters.

Spend twenty more dollars, and get her a knife for life: Purple Delica. My adult daughter loves hers.

OP said nothing about SD one way or the other . So no way to know if that would be of interest or not .

I helped to teach unarmed SD to young women in college for several years . Heard maybe a half dozen unsolicited personal testimonials on how menacing /threatening to use a knife had saved them from beating , rape and /or even murder . These particular young ladies had no special knife fighting training but all seemed to be tough and willing to actually fight to protect themselves . Of course , training and skill is always desirable and merely showing a weapon in bluff may do more harm than good if not backed up with fighting ability .

K kbirk2003 , depending on where you live at, carrying a knife in the waist band may not be the best idea. It could land her in trouble depending on the circumstances. I read where a honor student didn't get to graduate because he forgot about a knife he had in the trunk of his car on school property. They had a zero tolerance policy and didn't care if it was for his Scouting trip. It's crazy out there, so, it's best to think about where she'll be carrying a knife.
Maybe, since she has explained that her pants have no pockets, that's her way of saying she doesn't really doesn't want a knife. I'd also bet, she'd take a liking to a SAK. They have so many variety's and colors to choose from, there's one she'd like. If she likes a knife, regardless of what it is, she'll find a pocket to carry it in.

Thanks, appreciate your ideas for her. I also recommend the Kershaw scallion, I think you can get it without the assisted opening feature. Not sure. What about a Victoronix classic? No need for a pocket clip, but can attach to her key chain. Let us know how your search goes and good luck.:D

You can pick up a Spyderco Ambitious with a 2 1/2" blade for under $40 bucks. If that doesn't work there are several imported Kershaw's that will fit your description.

The Tuff Lite is an excellent suggestion IMO. Itll cut a thread and open an envelope with the best of them.
A Spyderco Dragonfly, as others have mentioned, is a step up and can be had secondhand in good condition for your budget on the sales forum. They pop up fairly often and its an awesome knife. The wire clip is elegant and discreet to boot.

The laws are confusing but they seem to be mostly about how the person intends to use their knife. She has some interest in knives, she likes to use her Mora and she carried the Mini AK for the whole day yesterday. She did tell me she wanted a locking blade though.
