Looking for a knife to carry while running

You chaps are rather suburban at times! I actually do carry a cutlass (machete) in my CamelBak, but then I live in Trinidad & Tobago.

Please don't remind me that I live in the 'burbs.....

Spyderco Delica. Lightweight and jogging short friendly, it should be able to meet any need you encounter.

not to be a jackass but it seems like you didnt even bother to read the original post.

I've been carrying my Delica clipped in my waste band and it's fine when I'm just jogging but the minute I bend over it jabs me in the stomach or leg. I tried it a few times clipped on the wasteband in the middle of my back, but the knife is not very accessible and when I do sit ups it gets in the way.

I dont know what it is, but every time I see a spyderco recommendation it either doesnt fit the asked criteria or the person already bought something.

interesting topic.when i was distance running in the country (.we have a lot of bears and coyotes in my area). i was carrying a cold steel recon scout on my fanny pack.when i was living in the city and was running near the projects i would alternate my cold steel 5'' voyager with my benchmade 630 skirmish. i think running in the city was a lot more dangerous then running in the country although on a twilight run i was once followed by a coyote for about 2 miles it was kinda funny when i would stop he would stop.but then he just left. if i was limited to a 3'' blade i would go fo a boker fixed blade subcom carried as a neck knife.

HAHAHAHA - A 12" machete strapped to my back like a sword would be cool... hell I could just carry a sword and tell people I'm training to be a Spartan!

Yep, sounds like Subcom may fit the bill.

no no, what you really need is the WASP knife ;) have you heard about it?:eek::D

Someone else said Kershaw Leek, I don't know why i didn't think of that. I carry mine (smoked red anodized alum scales) almost every day because it's got a useful blade, assisted open, and is small enough to disappear. It's totally smooth on the sides so i think that would be a good choice as well. Plus it's got a real long clip relative to it's length which makes me think it would be less likely to bounce out.

What about getting one of the watter bottle carriers and putting it in the key pocket?

This is an underserved segment of the knife market. I have carried a William Henry ti-carbon with 3" blade, 1.45 oz. for years. I just bought a William Henry 'Quest' with 3.25" blade, 1.6 oz according to the website I bought it from, but 2.1 oz. according to my scale. I like the fact that it's tip-up & has a zdp blade, but I tried running with it today and the extra .65 oz. does make a huge difference. It bounces around noticably whereas the old model didn't. .6 oz is not much, but OTOH is about a 40% difference.

I wish WH would bring back the ti-carbon with a ZDP blade and tip up carry.

I used to carry a BM 530, and currently carry a Caly Jr. Clipped to the pocket is not a problem when the knife is light enough, look for ones in the area of an ounce.

I would have to agree, I’d be much more concerned about running in the city than in the country. Glad to hear your coyote encounter turned out for the best. The subcom FB is a nice looking knife, I think I’m going to try and find a Subcom folder and carried that clipped in my waist band for a bit and see how that works. There are a lot good suggestions given so I may end up with a few different knives

Spyderco Delica. Lightweight and jogging short friendly, it should be able to meet any need you encounter.

Thank you for your suggestion, but that is the knife I’m carrying know on a run and don’t care for it. The handle is a bit too long to be comfortable for ME. As I mentioned, my runs do not consist of just running. I mix in pushups, sit-ups, crunches, tricep extensions (on a park bench), pull-ups if there is anything around to use, walking lunges, etc.

I’ve only ever owned one Kershaw in my life and didn’t really care for the AO part of it. It was a small Ken Onion design, I can’t remember the model. That’s not to say that I won’t give Kershaw a second chance, especially if it means finding that perfect knife to suit my needs. Thanks for your suggestion.
Oh – and the WASP…. Good one :barf::) Maybe I should carry one of those CS spears and run around like a tribesman looking for a meal. Hell, I could jog in a loin cloth and cut down on a lot of weight too.:)

Not a bad idea at all. If I’m carrying a bottle of water for me and the pooch anyway, I may as well make full use out of it. I’ll be stopping by the running shop sometime this week and I’m sure they’ve got a setup like that. I’ll be sure to check it out. Thanks.

I could not agree more. Think of the money in marketing “Fitness Knives” LOL.

I forgot to mention that I carried the 530 for a bit until I traded it. Not a very smart trade on my part since I now miss that knife. I’ve never handled the Caly Jr so I can’t really comment on it. The one thing I do like about Spyderco is how thin the knives are. They are pretty unobtrusive as far as width is concerned, but my delica rides a bit high for my liking and also is a bit long.

Your right. I didn't fully read the original post.

Boker SUBCOM. Ultimate workout knife, never gets in the way, concealed from over zealous security types, light weight. I never carry anything else when I run or exercise in the park, I even take it swimming occasionally.

I run with a light knife. I normally clip a spyderco native. It's a heck of a spear point slashing blade, should you need that. I've almost pulled it on some dogs that were dropped of and barking as I ran by. I figured they were friendly, thank goodness. If you were to get into a pickle, you can choke back, moving your hand away even further from what you are cutting. For example, if a pitbull got after you, you can choke your hand back on the knife, keeping yoursefl away a bit further from teeth and possibly a round of rabies shots. It is light and I don't even know it is there. I play with it as a run, sometimes.

Clip it to the leash. You can also get an attachment for the leash that holds the doggie bags. Or you could get a backpack for your dog and let him carry it all. The machete option for the dog may work... :D

I've been looking at getting a pack for the dog for our hikes. She can walk all day long and ask for more, but she doesn't care for running much past 3 miles at a time so I wouldn't torture her with a pack on a run.

It's amazing how the obviously slips your mind. I never really thought of clipping a knife to the leash. I'm goign to be holding the leash anyway. I'm going to have to give it a try and see if I can get it mounted on there securely.

I always pick shorts that have pockets (North Face Whitewater Shorts currently), and I carry an Emerson Bullnose Karambit clipped on the pocket. Light, agile, and very accesable! Add in an Emerson La Grief if you want a backup.
