Looking for a knife to carry while running

I always pick shorts that have pockets (North Face Whitewater Shorts currently), and I carry an Emerson Bullnose Karambit clipped on the pocket. Light, agile, and very accesable! Add in an Emerson La Grief if you want a backup.

I could not find "whitewater" shorts when I searched for them. I came up with all kinds of NF water shorts but no whitewater. The ones I saw look nowhere near being comfortable to run, jog, or workout in. They look like board shorts, is that what yours look like also?

That Emerson K-bit if pretty darn heavy and I don't need a backup at all as weight is a concern. I don't need my pants falling down while I'm running:D

I bought the shorts a few years ago, so they aren't going to be in the catalog anymore....

You think the Karambit is heavy do you???? Have you actually ever handled one (3.6 oz)? Sometimes I carry two of them....don't even notice they are there!

An Emerson LaGriffe would be smaller and lighter than most neck knives. The Hideaway knife is in the same size/weight class and has multiple carry options.

My biggest thing is dogs, and perhaps even mountain lions (trail running). I would love to have a much longer blade than the Karambit, but it is only practcal to carry something relatively small....

I was brutally attacked by a pitbull while running last year, it was horrible, that wagging tail nearly bruised me and I was almost licked to death!:)
On a more serious note, had that encounter turned out badly I'm not sure a SUBCOM would have helped much but I was glad it was there anyway.

I have had lots of experience with dogs! You give me a dog and a Karambit, and I will have the dog bleading out with a severed jugular in about half a second!!! This is precisely why I carry TWO karambits....so I can get him from whichever side persents itself.

Othewise....I would just shoot the dog, but a knife is so much more stealthy....

I like to carry IWB at my 3 or 4 o'clock. This is comfortable and should not poke you during exercise. The lightest 3" folder I can think of is the Benchmade 530, with the Spyderco Salt 1 close behind.

If you are like this middle-aged runner, things sag or jiggle a bit too much for IWB carry. :D
I wear a 3" elastic wrist band weak side and slip in an Endura or my Danbo necker. This gives discreet rock solid carry and quick access.

I guess "heavy" wasn't the right choice of words. I should have said it's not as light as the other options in front of me. Every ounce makes a difference.

You are the second person to mention the 3:00 position. I've tried it before, but maybe I need to give it a second try. I normally keep it somewhere between 11 and 1.

Thanks for the input.

LMAO - Yeah, I'm not as tight as I'd like to be either. :D

What's a Danbo necker?

What reason is that? The jiggles or not being able to decide on a knife? :)

How about a Maxpedition 10” x 4” Bottle Holder and strap a RAT Cutlery RC-3 on that. You could even carry a small FAK with that setup.

I have a ZDP Delica and can't think of anything easier to carry beyond that with the exception of the one I carry clipped to the front right of my basketball shorts and that's the Benchmade 530

Its not a super heavy-duty knife but I run and bought a SOG Flash I for the same reasons. Its super light and the pocket clip sets the knife down in the pocket so nicely it doesn’t flip around and I cant even fell it.

I am a big guy, and don't generally run or jog cause of bad knees and generall fatness ;), but I do carry a Native IWB when walking. I would put a lanyard, or chain, on the Delica and carry it around your neck. If you are worried about it opening under your shirt, I would be more worried about it opening under IWB carry. Sweat, same deal. If sweat is a big deal, go for a Salt. Also, short enough chain, maybe a break away chain as opposed to a lanyard.

While any small knife can be adapted to running, it would be nice if some mfg. would actually do a little research into what runners might like and design a specialized knife. For me it would be something ultra-light, no more than 2.0 oz., which probably means a blade of no more than 3.25." This allows it to be clipped to the pocket and not bounce around excessively. I have always carried a WH with a 3.0 inch blade that weighs only 1.45 oz, and it is absolutely no problem to carry it in any pocket. I could doubtless carry it clipped to a t-shirt pocket if I wanted--it's that light.

For me I would also like something somewhat SD oriented, which the WH is definitely not. I'd like a flipper guard. A handle shaped to form a guard, like on Emersons, would also be ok, but I think that the CRKT M16 style flipper is the lighter-weight option.

Finally, the blade should be coated to protect against rust due to sweat, and ti used for other parts for the same reason.
