Looking for a new knife, want to try something besides Spyderco

If you love your Manix2 ergos, ZT 0562!

If you like something smaller, the Kizer Gemini is kinda the perfect size clipless EDC for me. I carry a Spyderco almost everyday... the struggle is real :D
considering boom sauce is one of my favorite beers, I feel I can trust your opinion! I will definitely look at the 0562. Thanks for the recommendation!

I was just looking at the 0562 and noticed it comes in elmax and CTS 204p. Which would you suggest? I have never handled or sharpened elmax, but I had CTS 204p on my southard

BM 710-1401 from Knifeworks. Amazing steel on a great knife!!
BM 940-1501 from Knifeworks. One of the best 940 variants!
Kizer Corto. Excellent medium duty EDC! S35vn, great blade profile and grind with stupid smooth action!!
Pro Tech.......TR-3!! Amazing platform from a great company!!
Good luck!!
Joe

Great suggestions. Especially the BM 710-1401 and the Corto.

I wish it wasn't a flipper. I would buy one right now.

204p (which is the same as M390 and 20cv) is regarded as one of the best steel formulas out there for knife blades. Elmax has a more split opinion, but is certainly a fine EDC, and I've had great success sharpening it. But I'm a big fan of 204p, as well as ZT's smooth/matte solid carbon fiber, so the choice was easy for me. The 0562CF has shown up on the exchange quite cheap a few times recently, and some dealers will give you a decent discount if you ask nicely.

The knife is slim in pocket and carries very well thanks to the super deep carry clip. The ergos rival the Manix2 for me, while providing a much longer cutting edge despite being a very similar size. In hand its a confident cutting tool, and one of my favorite non-spydies. I'm not the biggest flipper fan, but this one defines an awesome flipper and is addicting. FN love the Boom Sauce lately. It was hanging with the Torpedo last night: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1054853-Beer-and-Blades!?p=16501483#post16501483

I have a Kizer Playlist on YouTube that I sure several of which would fall right into what you are looking for:

Hey all, I want to try a new knife company. So far, I own:
Spyderco Techno
Spyderco Southard
Spyderco Delica 4
Spyderco Manix 2
Spyderco paramilitary 2
Spyderco Native 5
Ontario Rat 1
Kershaw Blur
Buck 110

Other knives I used to own and didn't like:
Spyderco Resilience
Kershaw cryo 2
Zero Tolerance 0350
Kershaw Leek
Cold steel recon 1

Everyone seeks to love benchmade, but when I was at a sports authority, I held the mini grip and I really disliked the plastic handles. I know they have a g10 version but it's about twice the price.

I'm asking if there's a folder anyone can recommend, for general EDC use, cutting various cordage, slicing through fabrics, breaking down cardboard, cutting plastic straps, shrink wrap, just general EDC. Nothing I'd consider heavy use.

Although I'm not going to abuse a knife you suggest, does not mean I want some smith and Wesson piece of crap. There's pride in ownership when you have a quality knife.

My dislikes:
Most lockbacks
Two handed openers (traditional knives)

Other than that I'm pretty open to anything. But would only consider: benchmade, zt, or similar.

My budget is 50-200$

Ergonomics are most important

No tanto blades or clip points. I prefer ffg but it's not necessary. Thanks for all your input

Add another to the Benchmade 940/943 wagon, my personal favorite knife on today's market.

s30v in aluminum (940, 943) or g10 (940-2, 940-1501)
or
s90v in CF (940-1)

or if autos are legal the Benchmade mini reflex 2551 is awesome

Heres my previous Gen 2550 on bottom

Hear awesome things from Protech as well for autos

Benchmade 940, Zt 0450/0450cf, SG Spider Monkey are awesome knives under $200. I tend to like knives around this size for edc purposes. So I would recommend checking out anyone of these.

I am sorry. There is NOTHING other than Spyderco, IMO. I've done my homework...

...and I'm serious. Well, maybe an spurious model of some other company, but nothing too serious...

I appreciate the suggestions everyone, I'll do some further research and I'll give an update on my choice, with pictures!

Something different?

Hogue EX01
EnZo Birk
Mcusta (any)
DPx HEST/HEAT
Emerson (any)

Good luck, OP! :)

-Brett

Finally narrowed down my choices:
-Southern Grind Bad Monkey
-Emerson A100
-ZT 0562CF
-Enzo Birk 75
-Benchmade 940 w/ s35vn and CF scales

Which has a better feel in the hand for longer periods of time? Which can cut for extended periods of time without needing a touch up? Which is the knife you'd rather have if you could only have one and why? Thanks everyone

I love my 940s but, for work, my KW 710-1401 out classes it in every way except weight and steel IMO. Both steels are great but I prefer M390. Both handles are ergonomic but the 710 fills the hand much better. The 710 carries small for a knife it's size. I haven't taken mine out of my pocket since I got it.

As many have already suggested, I would recommend taking a strong look at the 94X series by Benchmade. I have a mini grip and am also not the biggest fan of the plastic scales. But my 940 (I just have the standard version) is one of my favorite EDC blades. Slim, light, incredibly fast, comfortable and capable. I love my standard 940, but the aluminum scales bother some, so perhaps consider the CF or G10 versions. Most large outdoor stores will carry one, and I highly suggest getting one in hand if possible. The speed and ease of use is fantastic. Good luck!

I can enthusiastically recommend the Spyderco Para 2 S30V
Love that knife.

As far as the "plastic" handles on the Grip I would Strongly and emphatically recommend that you rethink the material. It is fibrer reinforced and just because it might feel (actually sound) like cheep, extra hard brittle plastic on first blush . . . it is not . . . it is very practical material.

Love my full size Ritter Griptillian.

Any of these knifes will fulfill your needs.

Benchmade 551-1
ZT 0562cf
Spyderco domino
Pro-Tech Tr-4 manual
Pro-Tech Tr-4 Auto

Boker and maybe CRKT.

I've always steered away from them because I feel they are overpriced for sub par materials

I have no CRKT but I can tell you straight up that this Boker in Ti handles and 440C is one of my favorite knives ergonomics wise (easy to open AND CLOSE one handed) and is, for the price practically FREE for what you get.

I know . . . no lock backs . . . that is why I didn't mention it . . . but . . . do not underestimate this knife :

I could easily be happy with this as my only larger work folder.
Freekin' only $40 or $50 ! ! ! ! After having it and using it I would easily pay $150 for this knife. Action way better than my Cold Steels. Better edge retention than my Manix S110V (say whaaaaaa????? long story) Better action than the Manix too (lock/open and close).

I have a regular digi camo PM2 and also a PM2 with Allen Putman's scale made for PM2.
The Putmans scale changed the way the PM2 looks and feel. Thicker and solid grip and not really that heavy. Maybe consider this option as well. The scale is a bit expensive $50-75 , but I would say It's worth it if you prefer to carry right pocket tip-up only.

I would also look for Hindere Design ZT.
I kind of like the ZT0770 design.
