Looking for a nice oudoorsy knife

My most used "outdoor" knife for when I don't want to wear a fixed blade or my Adamas in it's sheath
is a Griptilian. Just the right size/weight for me.

Outdoorsy knives on washers:
BM: griptilian, (super) freek, bailout, adamas
Spyderco: pm2, manix, shaman...
Outdoorsy is a pretty big field...out of those I'd pick the shaman.

Good luck!

Another vote the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter. $110ish.
If you like a slimmer handle, the CS American Lawman is an option and a few dollars less. $95ish
If you like a slim metal handle, the CS Code 4. $85ish.

I think CS offers great bang for the buck and I like the Tri-ad lock.

An SAK ALOX version is classy and there are many iterations that might appeal to you.

A pocket sheath / slip tends to work well with these.

A 111mm SAK with a locking blade and / or one hand opening night also work.

Many colours and tool combinations.

I always carry a larger folder with an SAK. The SAK always has a saw blade and corkscrew for outdoors stuff. Huntsman is my go to paired with my Spyderco Paramilitary D2 or ZT 0350.

Another vote for the Buck 112...
They're easy to carry, and hold an edge really well.
(Unless you'd rather carry a Leatherman...)

There is a Buck 102 Woodsman with green micarta handle and S35VN steel out there. This is a nice carry-able sized fixed blade. One of my favorites.

The Ultimate Hunter looks nice, I wish there were more flavors of it though, not crazy about lock back either but I can deal with it. I think I actually like the Bush Ranger a little more but can't find it available in Canada. Same with the Hogue Ritter, no one seems to have it.

I have considered a buck but my issue with their folders is they tend to be heavy and the styling just feels dated to me. Their fixed blades are really nice but never been that big on their folders.

As for BM, the Mini Crooked River I got left a bad taste in my mouth, I don't know if I'd but another knife from them.

P powerslave what is the knife you posted a photo of on page one of EDC XIII?

not lockbacks on those two cold steels. they have tri-ad locks. look same but different. tri-ad is the strongest lock invented.......so far.

Mike Wallace's cs bush ranger folder, the top end one not the lite version,..... is one of my personal favorite cold steel knives. its top notch. big enough, but not too big. very strong and well designed.

Wish I could find a Bush Ranger here, sold out on warriorsandwonders, can't seem to find one anywhere else. Hero outdoors has them but they obviously know they are in short supply as they are asking almost $400.

The Buck 110 Pro (manual) or Elite (auto) is a perfect balance of modern and classic.
I carry mine in a pocket sheath. The 112 Pro is also available in G10 with the upgraded blade steel ( S30V).

I've seen reports where some testers were "less than enthusiastic", about the 110 Auto's action.
Can you comment on that?
(I may still get a 112 Auto just for the upgraded blade steel...)

Single blade, a Buck 110 or 112.
Depending on your budget, either standard production or Custom Shop.

For a multi blade, a classic 2 blade slipjoint Folding Hunter, or a Moose pattern.
I am glad we keep you old guys around to remind us of the classics. My dad did everything with a buck 110 for weekends and a case stockman for weekdays.

Op, I suggest a Hogue Ritter in orange. It is a great design in a great stainless steel. Bright orange so you are less likely to lose it when you set it down. It isn’t as easy to clean as a fixed blade but the back is open so it cleans out ok.

A White river backpacker is the fixed blade equivalent, imho.

I have four of them, two regular 110/112's autos and two Elite 110/112's.

All function well, no blade play and good lockup. The 112's have a little quicker action, but I wouldn't consider any of them lazy.

My favorites are the G10 Elites, I like the G10 scales and brushed nickel bolsters.
The only negative is that the knives need to be sent to Buck if the springs break, they're not repairable by the consumer.
But I've not had any problems with my four.

The most outdoorsy folder I can think of is the Casstrom Lars Fält lockback:

I know it looks like you're gunning for folders, but one of my favorite 'outdoorsy' knives is the ESEE izula with the TKC scales (regular, not extended). It's very compact, hides well, and generally doesn't raise eyebrows. I can fit the hole thing in my pocket. I beat the tar out of mine and the humble 1095 holds up well. They now offer the same knife in S35VN, which I've really enjoyed on my ESEE 3. And... one time I heard Lee D killed a bear armed only with the Izula, so you know it's good.

Of course Antman brings up a great point- let them look. Remember, they're not raising their eyebrows because they see a scary knife... they just see excellent mating material and can't believe their good fortune that they should get to gaze upon you. Walk with a swagger in those provincial parks.

Hogue Ritter
Anyone else speed read over this and read "Rogue Hitler"?

Edit... Antman? I mean AntDog. I guess Jason Voorhees and Paul Rudd kind of look similar.
