Recommendation? looking for a small high quality fixed blade edc type knife

Check out White River Knife and Tool, especially their custom shop offerings, might be just what you're looking for...
I really like the Backpacker Pro and it would be more special with nicer handle materials such as you can get in their custom shop. The Small Game knife is another winner in my book which currently has micarta handles. One of those would be special with a nicer handle material.

My personal fave is the Sendero Classic. Big enough to be a real work knife, small enough to be carried daily. Some may prefer a knife with no guard, I'm not picky...

Also, a big fan of Jerry Fisk!

I dont know if they are still avaliable, but I really like my Bark River City Knife. Been carrying it everyday in my front pocket for 6 or 7 years. May or may not be what you are looking for. Well under $500, so you could get 2....

Wow. I’ve seen some White River knives on YouTube and I found the shape interesting. I always figured I’d get one eventually, but looking at their custom line has me thinking I need to get one now. Great steel, exotic handles, very nicely done mosaic pins. I’d argue they are better done than what I see on some of the Bark River Essentials I’ve had my eye on. Thank you for opening my eyes. If only there was a custom Caper available.

With the budget you posted I would look into a custom ... Horsewright is top notch ... as are several custom makers on the forums ...

the CPK EDCs are great knives and are not stainless but his Delta 3V heat treat makes them very resistant ...

I could mention several production knives ... but again if you are looking in the $300.00 to $500.00 range ... I would check out the makers and get something unique.
Thank you. I’m really leaning toward custom but my birthday is in a month and I’m thinking that might cut it short on time. I do like that CPK EDC though. I’m so glad I asked this question here. Suddenly I’m aware of these smaller knife makers with outstanding offerings.

The City Knife definitely checks all the marks. I just can’t find it anywhere.

If you are in the Portland OR/Hillsboro area, visit Carter Cutlery - stopped in the the other day and they have some amazing fixed blade knives form camp size all the way down to mini-edc knives. Their Apprentice line (hasn't passed his journeyman test yet) is very nice for a reduced price.

Or ....

The RMJ COHO (I have this one, and with a little bit of re-profiling to thin out the BTE thickness it is a super handy EDC)

Awesome! Thank you. Carter Cutlery seems to have the kind of knifes I’m looking for.

Those RMJ knives are very nice, but a little too tactical for my needs here. However, they would definitely fill a different need for me. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

Dozier Modified Personal

D2 was a fairly popular steel, but it has been overshadowed by the so-called super steels. Done right, it makes a great knife... and few do it as well as Bob Dozier.
Dozier's kydex offer solid retention & easy release... and I really appreciate being able to attach/remove the sheath without undoing my belt.
I'm not trying to talk you into this knife - pick whatever best suits your wants/needs - I just wanted to comment on your Note.

This is all true and Dozier knives have a great reputation. The last one I purchased was the K-6 Companion (in D2) with Rosewood Burl handles. Really a pretty knife and the size is just a tad larger than the Personal I previously posted. I know how it is to prefer leather sheaths; I generally do. But I can tell you that his cross draw kydex sheaths are really useful and they keep the knife very close to your body so you aren't advertising "knife" when you carry it. The only real way to understand is to pick one up and fondle it some. The Dozier Canoe is another that would be easy to edc.

May I suggest you go back to Bark River. I was looking for a fixed blade that I could carry in a front or rear trousers pocket. I have some of the knives mentioned in your discussion, a few Randalls, Dozier, Bark River and others. I wanted the knife ASAP, however. Didn't want to wait for a Randall or a Dozier. I looked instead at "Knives Ship Free (KSF), a distributor of Bark River and many other brands. They have a very large inventory of Bark River knives and usually ship the same or next day after an order is received. I ordered an Essential II with nice vintage "old ivory" micarta scales. It's a little over 7 inches, slightly larger than I want for front pocket carry but a very nice knife, CPM154 steel. A Necker l with beautiful stabilized red maple burl scales, also CPM154 was next. It's about 6", just right for front pocket. Both knives are very high quality.

If you go to KSF and look up the Essential ll with amboyna burl scales, I"ll bet money you'll want it. Amboyna burl is one of the most beautiful burls.

Hitachi White is a pure carbon steel. High edge holding and can get very sharp (fine edge). Also can be tempered to a high hardness. But, is not stainless at all. The laminate 410 is to coat the steel so that only the cutting edge area is exposed. Will patina if exposed to damp/wet environments.

EDIT: the cutting edge and spine will patina, not the laminated area

Thank you very much for enlightening me. My curiosity has been satisfied.

Erm, what about an Esee Izula for about $30 which you can use all the time?

I have almost the whole line of ESEE’s, the Izula and Izula 2 included. For a survival application, they are everything I need. However, for my edc needs I’d like something more corrosion resistant than 1095. The addition of exotic materials for the scales and other interesting design elements would also be appreciated. Don’t get me wrong, I love ESEE. I’m just looking for something fancier for this purchase.

Believe me, most of my free time in the last few weeks has been spent researching my options. No complaints here as I get to oogle beautiful knives with the intent to purchase one. When it comes to the Essential, I have maybe a half dozen options on my radar. This line is what started this little journey.

In the little bit of research I’ve done, I understand Dozier has a magic touch when it comes to D2, which is why it’s still on my list. As for the Kydex, I generally prefer it for the reasons you indicated. I currently have a leather lined holster for my firearm. If I could find something like that for a knife, I’d definitely pay attention.

AG Russell may have passed; but his site continues to offer a good selection of Dozier knives. The modified personal is generally in stock, and it's only a few months wait if you catch them when it isn't.
