looking for good slicer that can take a beating

This would be my choice at under $100. Great steel, excellent design, tough, ergonomic.

Well, I definitely get that.

I don't recall seeing a suggestion from you, though. What do you like for this sort of thing?

Well, I'd suggest anything from an opinel to a military but I'm sure I still have a good understanding even if I don't spring for a 110. I do still have my old schrade 110 K/O. :)

I have a Viper Start which I regard as both a "slicer" and a "sturdy" knife. It has a wide, finely ground blade with plenty of belly. Comes in two different steel options and a variety of handle options.

I chose D2 steel with black canvas micarta handles. It's been my semi-regular carry knife for several months now and I like it a lot.

A 1911 is too heavy and doesn't hold enough rounds :) I love mine though! Different strokes.
Depends on what you're up against. If 8 rounds aren't enough to get you out of trouble, then you're probably in trouble a lot deeper than any pistol can get you out of.

Of course, there's always extra mags.

As for the weight, I like a gun with a bit of heft to it.

:)
