Looking to start dabbling in knifemaking

This guy?

That looks like an OregonBladeMaker machine.

There are 2 models. The black is more expensive and is bolted together as opposed to being welded. I got the yellow one.

Super excited for you buddy :thumbup: expecting a bunch of great pics when you hook up the motor :)

And a video of it running / tearing metal off stock on YT :)

EDIT: STOCK IN THE HOUSE!!! :D

Spent the day out at a forum members house. He had me make this. Then when went over to his buddies and tried heat treating some mystery steel he had lying around. Learned a lot, had a blast. Lots of good folks here on the forums for sure!

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on this while I wait to find out whether I can get that circuit installed or not.

I know that style. Good to see you here. I'm betting that will be one heck of a cutter.

Dude, awesome!!! I'm stuck here in my apartment looking stuff up online lol. Came across more videos of the same yellow OBM you're getting in. I'm going to a knife show down in Eugene on Saturday, April 8th... I'm going to shoot the guy an email now and see if I can swing by to see the workshop / buy the grinder in person. That will give me a good date in the somewhat near future to get my garage ready. I know I wont want this thing just sitting around :p

The other video that basically sold me, he talks a lot about motors for it too:

Yeah, try to meet up with people for sure! I already watched that video, I think its probably one of the best ones I've seen explaining the setup.

I tried, was going to head down to a local knife maker's place for some basic grinder tips but he was feeling a bit under the weather last week and wasn't in the shop. Moving a week from this Friday... busy packing / prepping stuff like installing a fence for the dog etc, and then its clean up the garage. Don't think I have a day between now and the end of march to get out even if I had someone to show me :p

I did hear back from Salem via email this morning. Too bad he's on the other side of the mountains!! Seems like there are a lot of knife makers over there in OH and I'm sure there are plenty hiding out in the woods here, I just need to find them.

Cheers buddy,
-Jim

I'm getting a 220VAC in the garage, so I almost purchased the kbac 27d but now that all I need is 220 to 220 3p I can save a load of money,

Any recommendations in choosing one or specific features I should be looking for? I was going to enclose the unit since it seems the cheaper ones are open.

Should have everything up and going in a week :)

Loved your regrind video buddy, keep it up!!! Just got an email back from OBM! They do allow people to will call / pick up their stuff, so I will be swinging by there I think on Friday April 7th on my way down for the knife show in Eugene on the 8th. Can't wait to see yours up and running!

Nice! Save your self some big bucks picking that up! Mine should be here tomorrow and I got just about everything I need to get it going.

Good looking grinder!

As for a decent but cheap VFD recommendation, if you don't mind enclosing it, I'd just grab one of the chinese specials off of ebay for about $100 or so. They offer some with a speed pot, which is nice, but shipping from China can take a while. You MIGHT find a seller on AliExpress that uses DHL or some other faster shipping, but I don't know what the price difference would be, and AliExpress can be a bit of a pain.

You can get a huanyang VFD without the speed pot from a US seller for pretty cheap. They actually have a spot on the control board where you can add your own, or you can make your own external "remote" with a power switch and a speed pot.

TECO drives are pretty well regarded as well, though they're a little pricier.
