Loveless 35th Anniversary Knife - My version.

what a strange thread Ian.
Good work:D:thumbup:

Mike, long time no hear. i hope you are well. Sorry for your loss.

How about an update on Lovett Knives in another thread? There is always much interest here. i purchased a city knife recently...nice work!

It's a bad time here at the Lovett house right now. Bob's lose is hitting much harder than I expected. Even though I have been aware of his condition for some time now. It still hurts like hell.

I will be posting in just a few day as to where I have been and why.

And some Great News for the Custom Knife World in general!;)

I hadn't looked at this thread since early on pg. 2...WOW! It usure has changed, but is also very interesting.

To me, I think this forum should be viewed the same as other forums AND the internet in general. After spending time reading, understanding others opinions, and forming your OWN, hopefully knowledge will result.

It is inevitable that there are those that just like to make a lot of posts, those that KNOW what they are posting about, and those that are simply contentious. After a while it becomes obvious what posts are of value and those that are a waste of time.

By the way Ian, I also like your attitude, and would say your skills are improving as you continue showing your knives.

Lastly, good to see you posting again Mike Lovett!

Peter

Well, well.... I'm starting to wonder whether this thread will ever go away!:D

Thanks for all your continued comments (especially the good ones;))

Nice to hear that people like my attitude as well as my knives...double bonus eh?.:eek:

My approach to making has changed a lot recently. I'm not really sure why, but for some reason I just feel more comfortable sticking to what I want I do rather than trying to do what I thought I should be doing, if that makes sense.

So, expect plenty more Loveless inspired knives that don't look quite right, and have horrible brass fittings.;)

In fact, as soon as my PC starts working properly (I'm on someone else's at the moment) I've got a little dagger ready for you to pass comment on.

I'll not say where my inspiration came from though, I'll see if you can guess..;)

Cheers once again,

Ian

Hi Lorien,

Les is a custom knife entrepreneur, and knowing vaguely how that might work I assume that he pulls his punches more often than not, he has a lot at stake due to his making his livelihood in this business. However, we've all seen him get into trouble from time to time.

Most people who know me would tell you that I seldom if ever pull punches (which is why I get into trouble). :D

One of the problems with the knife forums is too many people have either a lot of knowledge about one very small sector of the overall market. Or they "Feel" they have a certain level of knowledge...gained primarily from reading posts of other "experts" and not gaining this knowledge on their own.

Consequently, fellow fourmites more times than not give a "positive" oriented post. This is especially true when someone posts up a knife...no matter how many mistakes it has or how butt ugly it is.

Lorien, STeven has a wealth of knowledge that only comes from 25 years in custom knives and handling, buying, selling and trading Tens of Millions of $$$$$ worth of custom knives.

Generally he speaks from the heart and provides the best guidance he can.

This forum is very fortunate to have him and his vast expertise to draw from.

I totally agree Les.

Yes IMO, one of the few problems associated with the Internet in regard to custom knives is that it gives us too many experts whose vast majority of expertise comes from viewing knife photos rather than actually viewing and handling knives.

Not saying that knife photos haven't played a huge part in the advancement custom knives, but it's hardly the same learning experience as having had thousands in your hands and in close proximity of your eyes.

Probably only up to about $5,000,000 so far(handling, not selling or buying:D)

I appreciate your words, Les, after so much contention lately it is nice to be recognized by someone who has always been honest with ME, and not been afraid to take a position that runs counter to the crowd, and efficiently explain that position.

When I was at the R.W. Loveless memorial, was sitting with Dave Ellis, Tommy Hutton, Phil Lobred and Steve Weiss. I was the probably the youngest person not related to Bob at the ceremony. Those 4 guys have all been collecting knives since the '60's, Phil and Steve were both at the 2nd Knifemaker's Guild show....Dave is the first ABS Mastersmith in California....Tommy has a collection that I would give one of my testicles and two fingers to own(not really, but you get the picture).

Those guys are the experts.....I'm just another knife-obsessed middle-aged guy trying to simultaneously learn from greats, and help teach and guide those without my access to the greats.....maybe less of an expert, and more of a conduit.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

ps; I apologize if any of my comments seemed to diminish anyone's character or experience. It has never been my intention to bring anyone down or to disparage anyone here or anywhere.

I understand that I am a 'Johnny come lately', and I'll admit that perhaps I might come off as a know-it-all sometimes, but, just as a picture of a knife can't give a complete impression of the knife, typed posts on a forum also can't give a complete impression of a person.

Yes Steven/Les, I was having a hard time with the tens of millions myself.
About five seems more in-line. ;)
Besides hope the tax-man isn't tuned in. ;) :D

I handled a bunch of original San Francisco knives in Las Vegas one year where the whole batch was worth close to $1,000,000.....skewed my numbers real good.:D....

The AKI????I've been to three....what do you think those puppies run? I try to leave my fingerprints everywhere.:D

In all seriousness, any collector at Blade who wants to handle the "good" stuff can probably fondle $250,000 worth of knives fairly easily....Loveless, Moran, the occasional Walker, Loerchner, Schmidt, all those Emerson knives....it really isn't that hard....and the great thing is that EVERY knife is an educational experience!

You don't trouble me, Lorien....I appreciate your enthusiasm and energy...you are as much a value to BladeForums as anyone here.
Best Regards,

That's certainly a TRUE statement imo. One of my biggest surprises at knife shows is how many folks appear so different in person than on the internet.

Very true. And remember, the Warenski "big three" were at Santa Barbra last year? A certain collector/photographer got up to his elbows in the $$$$$ there too. ;) :D

I'm sure Coop's got us ALL beat. Can you imagine how many millions worth of knives he has photographed over the years?

That's funny. Before I came to your post I wuz thinkin' that I'd raise your 5 million to ten. Conservatively. ;)

I've got over 5500 individual knife photos. At an honest value of $2000 each that's 11 million.

That's just what I have on record. Then there are those I've coon-fingered.

Ian, you're getting a lot of traction out of this thread. It has nothing to do with your post, but, who cares....!  :D

Coop

I can't believe this thread is still hanging around.

Just in case anyone is interested (and to be honest, you're probably not:D) the new owner of this knife is very happy with it...

...mind you, he's never even heard of Bob Loveless.

Thanks for looking, even if it was to talk about more interesting things.;)

Ian

Ian, you got those three Warenski's posted on this thread. You must be doing something right!:cool:

I don't remember seeing that photo anywhere in this forum over the course of the past five years...
