Low ball offers

I can usually discern which individual I want to transact with. The extreme lowball PM offer(i.e., 50 to 68%) tells me everything I need to know. My experience has taught me to simply ignore, not negotiate with such an individual. Nothing personal.

That's what I do, just reply with a "No, thank you" delete the PM. I just figure we're too far apart to be able to meet on price.

That's my response as well. Maybe the person is greedy, or maybe he's just an incompetent negotiator. I don't know. Regardless, if I feel that I've been lowballed, I respond politely, but I don't make a counter-offer.

When I have received 50% type offers I've always sent a counter offer, usually about $1 less than the original price. No one seems to want to negotiate after that.

Now see that's the problem, if one makes a low offer and the seller responds, the would-be buyer has to counter their counter. If you ever post a knife for sale and I'm interested in buying it and I offer you 2/3's of your asking price and you counter with a one dollar decrease then I know that you're the type that takes the buying and selling of used knives for what it is, a pastime, not a life or death situation. I would then raise my 2nd offer and see where we end up. No harm, no foul, no personal insults hurled about by people who don't know one another. No lists...

$67.25, you are laughable. You are the exact type of person that would list your item, for way more then it's worth and not want to negotiate. This is why I do not deal with people like you. You want top dollar for you thing, but want to buy for next to nothing. It is clear as to what we are dealing with here. No one's ever asked me for a refund!

I'm curious, we've never met nor have we ever transacted business with one another yet you persist in making personal insults and maligning my character. It leads me to the obvious question, were you dropped on your head as a child?

How is making a lower than you'd like offer a sign of incompetence or greed exactly?

Isn't it possible that the buyer simply wants a good deal and starts negotiations a little lower than you would like?

We're not talking about negotiating for anything of tremendous value here nor are we discussing matters of life and death, it's only a knife.

I'm honestly curious, is everyone's time so valuable that the 2-3 minutes it might take to simply respond that important?

What if we end up 5% lower than where we started, what's that worth in time and effort?

Everyone who agrees with is correct, right?

That would, to a more intelligent person seem to be self evident. Since I don't knowingly post or say things I know aren't true if someone agrees with me then yes, they are in fact correct.

I think you forgot a you in your comment by the way.

Sorry bro- you shot air ball from the free throw line, with your 50% offer logic. I'd be willing to bet, that if you made 100 of your 50% offers here (folders priced in the $200 -400 range, you'd be batting .000 Just my opinion.

I'd hate to see you walking into a 99 cent store- it would be hilarious, watching all of the people standing/waiting in line behind you! Same thing if you walked into a Burger King (HAVE IT YOUR WAY). ;)

Given I've purchased exactly one used folding knife albeit at less than your stated price range from a member here for what I offered I'm actually batting 1.000 so far. The rest of the knives I've purchased here have all been new, directly from the makers so far as I can remember anyway. Paid what they were asking because they had clear value, weren't used, and I like supporting individual knife makers who are doing cool stuff. I can also differentiate between what and why I pay for handmade, one off or extremely limited production knives versus buying used, mass produced folders that are usually overpriced by people who are trying to get people like me to finance their hobby of flipping knives.

As for shopping at the 99 cents store, their prices are established and reasonable which are two of the conditions that I placed on my description of when I offer less than the asking price. Can't stand Burger King do I can't speak knowingly on that subject...

But seriously, I take your point, really I do I'm simply astounded that people get so "het up"about getting an offer on a used knife that they feel they've been insulted. It's only a knife...

I've done that, and had the person come back later with a more reasonable offer. Other times I'm gotten more lowballs or the occasional nastygram, which gets the person ignored.

^ I do respect the fact, that you are sticking to your guns, despite the fact that your viewpoint doesn't quite conform to many of the actual people whom sell here on BladeForums. Regardless- I'm just trying to have some fun here!

FWIW- I've always been respectful to whomever has sent me a very (in your case VERY VERY VERY VERY) low ball offer my way (as far as I can remember anyway). I will continue to behave in this manner.

BTW- thank you, for the distraction, JohnWE- & I mean that! I'm healing up from a pretty nasty surf injury (one that will keep me inside for a week or two)...so this has been a pleasant, rather enjoyable distraction. Especially in lieu of the fact that the surf is pumping 6-8 feet right now at South Ponto's & I can't be out there! :grumpy:

http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/ponto-at-south-carlsbad-state-beach-southern-california_128083/

This thread has pretty much ran it's course, & is turning into one of those dead horses IMHO...

I agree JohnWE. Knifehunt did the same thing to me. That's what the "ignore list" is for..and why he's now on it.

:D

I also agree with Kelama. This thing should probably be closed cause it will probably only degrade further. PS. **Kelama...feel better bud!

If I feel that I've been lowballed, I'm not going to negotiate. That's a personal decision. I respond politely, but I don't make a counter-offer.

Is the person that lowballed me greedy? He certainly might be, but I can't make that assessment without more information, so I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt. That's why I respond politely.

Is the person that lowballed me an incompetent negotiator? That depends on how often sellers reject him because of lowball offers. Even the best negotiators make the occasional mistake. However, if a negotiator is rejected the majority of the time by sellers who feel that they've been lowballed, then I'd say he's incompetent.

I'll put it another way. If a negotiator fails the majority of the time, would you hire him to negotiate on your behalf? No. You'd find a competent negotiator with a strong track record.

The negotiator who is regularly rejected needs to rethink his strategy. He can't blame it on the sellers.

I'm not saying this is you. You might be an outstanding negotiator, who has a gift for talking down sellers. I don't know. I'm just speaking hypothetically for the purpose of answering your question.

Anyone who sells anything here probably gets a ton of these.

"Will you take $10 and a dirty sock for your $400 knife?"

"I saw the same knife on EZKnives4U.ru for $80, so will you take $40?"

Etc.

What do you all consider "low ball?" Anything lower than your asking price, or is there a threshold of acceptance for offers slightly lower than your asking price?

What I would consider a "low ball" depends on what I'm selling and the price that I'm asking. Usually, I price things at what I want for them. But I think that if someone offers half your asking price or a box full of used computer parts, then they're just fishing for a handout. Yes, I've actually had someone offer me a box full of used computer parts (probably worth less than the cost to properly dispose of them). I think low balling occurs much more often with trades than money offers (even when "no trades" is stated). I usually just say "no thank you".

What absolutely blows my mind is the folks who try to waste as much of your time as possible in the hopes that it will wear you down. I just decline to deal with them at all. Would you rather sell for less to someone that is respectful of your time or someone that is intentionally wasting it and playing games?? I haven't had this problem often on Bladeforums but it's common on Craigslist and after auction close Ebay offers. Everyone knows that someone doesn't wait until after auction close to make an offer unless they have no intention of paying your asking price. There's no good reason to play games. You'd just be wasting your time and the seller's time. If you're going to make an offer, then make the offer in your first or second email, not your sixteenth!

There's a good group of folks that buy/sell knives on Bladeforums and I haven't really run into problems. Trades offers have been so completely disappointing that I don't really even consider them anymore.

You're a player on team Low Ball as well.... and VERY pushy about a seller accepting your offer.

Seems that you are the one doing some name calling. Extremely arrogant as well.

Mine was an honest question. Your comments on the other hand...

Traumatic brain injuries can cause some of symptoms you display.

This is a knife discussion forum is it not?

I've been discussing the selling and purchasing of knives.

My comments are on-topic and respectful to all who reciprocate.

Sorry you find them not to your liking. I do wonder why you felt the need to contribute nothing of value but since I'm on your list I suppose we'll never know...I'm sure it's my loss.
