Having found the knife I was intending to hide I'm hoping to have this set up for the weekend. You're looking for a cordwraped scandi hiking knife I made, hidden in a very fancy waterproof envelope that some fool hid in the woods. It is currently sheathless, but if you want I will make you one in the future.

This will work similarly to the one put on by Bushman5, with the exception of it being at night. To facilitate this I'll be setting up a currently undecided type of reflector at way points you have to find by shining your light on them, I'll also leave some blaze marks to keep you in the right direction.

Sometime during Friday afternoon I will update this with directions. This will either take place in the Lower conservation reserve, or a subsection of the Baden Powell network. You will need a compass, a light, and your regular gear.

the searches travel time will probibly be about 40ish minutes, plus searching time. So it should end up taking under 2 hours.
Because i dont just want to send you guys into unknown woods at night blindly. at any time you will not be more then 20 minutes from getting out if you just head south.
If you still feel this is unsafe you can still do this during the day, it will just be harder to find the way points. and less fun.

So here's where I need some help. Reflectors. I don't know what to use. Ideally they should light up reflecting light back at you like an animals eyes when light hits them. Like the light pucks on roads. But also be feasibly cheap, and easily attached without harming trees. I was thinking maybe reflective utility cord they sell at mec, but don't know how reflective it really is.

EDIT: Went back out today to put up bigger reflectors, and finish up the rest. In a thunder storm no less. (the things i do for you guys...)

Print this out.

Turn off the bridge onto Mt. Seymour parkway. Turn left on Strathaven Drive. You'll be parking on the side of the road facing a chain link fence.

-You'll see a chain link fence with some broken up pieces of the reflector tape you'll be seeing latter on.

-Go to the top of the hill, you'll be in a clearing with a few different paths to chose from. 2 trails beside each other on your right. Take the trail straight ahead
. There will be an overhanging tree with a reflector, and some orange tape on branches behind it. Take note that this orange flagging tape is not mine. I did not set it up though i will on occasion reference it

- When you intercept a larger trail at a T junction head to the right (Northish) There will be a blaze mark and reflector on an overhanging dead tree.

-Continue up this trail for awhile. You will see approaching aliens to your left. Don't mind them they're only after the brains of young children.
The trail will open up on your left to a large clearing. In the middle of that clearing there is a burnt out camp fire. Stand in it and scan the tree's around you for a reflector.
There are many trails around you, but when you find the reflector the trail you will take is in line with the reflector.

- Head past the reflector up the trail. This trail is short and will come to a junction shortly. when it does Scan either side for a reflector. (You may have to strife back and forth to make sure the reflector isnt blocked)
When you find it, thats the trail you will be taking.

-This trail will meet a larger trail shortly. Go left (Northish)

-KEEP YOUR WIDE EYES OPEN. you will cross over a fallen tree across the trail with a blaze mark on it. There is a reflector, though i cannon garantee it is still there. high trafic area.
Shortly after this log there is a flag marker on the right side of the trail. A few feet behind that there is a SMALL not very well traveled trail to your right threw some sprouting bushes and under some branches

-Play connect the dots with the reflectors. This trail is not very well traveled and hard to make out at night. Each reflector is visible from the last reflector (once you find the first...)

-Eventually the dots will stop and you'll find yourself on a more defined trail, which still may be a little difficult to make out.

-This trail will meet a junction of a very rooty trail. Stand at the roots of the fallen tree you just climbed over, and look up and down the root trail for the markers. go on the trail in the direction of the marker. There are reflectors along this trail, as well as many blaze marks on fallen trees

-You will hear flowing water soon. This trail will soon junction with a larger trail. Head towards the sound of water, but turn right before you get to the river. Any right, they both converge. If you see blue polls you've gone to far.
You will see a reflectors on the correct trail

-There are a few places where this trail peels off. Stay on the main one with a chrome car bumper leaned up against a tree.

- Continue up the trail towards the sound of water. This trail will branch off into 2, but go threw the stream and Get your feet wet then continue up the trail (an old riverbed)

-Shorty you will come to a well defined rotten Log across the trail guiding you left in the right direction. There is a reflector on this log. Once again threw the stream. This one will really test your goretex boots

- Continue up this trail a ways. You will come across 2 reflectors. 1 on either side of the trail. Go down the trail to your left.

-This trial has a few reflectors peppered on it. you're coming to the end.

-You will come across 2 large branches forming an X in the middle of the trail. The greenery is sheared off and laying ontop to better define the X.

-Take a seat on the mossy rock. The knife will reveal its location to those who listen every 4 minutes (Its THAT friggen sharp). It's within 20 feet hidden under greenery to the east if this dosnt work.

Once you find it, get out by continuing down on the trail you're on. It will hit the main trail, turn right and just stay on it. you'll come back down to where the clearing was and should be able to find your way out from there. again if not, head south and youll hit the parkway.

Please bring the watch back, and leave it somewhere around where you parked. Let me know where it is and I'll get it in the morning.

Things to bring in addition to obvious stuff

-waterproof footwear
-extra socks
-flashlights
-bring an axe or saw if you want to play. Forest got raped by a storm and there are lots of downed trees. So bring it along and clear out parts of trail if you want.

Bushman5, and Jca21, please post that you have seen this so i know when i can stop bumping this.

Is anyone going up tonight or tomorrow?

How about bike reflectors? You could probably find some old ones for free or cheap.

What about some of the reflectors used on bicycle wheels? Should be able to grab a few at the local bike store, or the local bike rack for that matter.

I thought about the bike reflectors. Annoying thing is i bike a lot. whenever i get a new bike the first thing i do is take off the reflectors and throw them away. This being promoted by a reflector coming off and thwacking me in the face once. They're not easy to attach either.

The tape could work, but I'm wondering if it has to be pointed at where the light is coming from to reflect properly. Otherwise it's probibly the best option The tacks would be perfect but i have no idea where to get them, and dont want to leave any behind to rust. Might be able to get some kind of jogging reflector bands too.

I guess I'll just go down the MEC with a flashlight and ask to use the change rooms :D

I can't remember where I got them but have some plastic clothespins that are reflective trail markers. I have also used the tacks and find both to work well.

hey MUNKY!!! go to MEC and pick up some silver 3M reflective tape. Its sold by the foot over in the climbing section, under the accessory cord rack. Cut off 1" pieces and use a carpet tack (home depot) to tack them to bark. The 3M stuff lights up with a the dimmest of LED lights....

here is a pic (still loading)

the stuff lights up with a dim LED light from hundrees of feet. Its about 6 bucks for a couple feet. Even little tiny 1/4" x 1/4" dots light up...

i often mark my trails this way when in unfamiliar land.

EDIT: you could get some bamboo food skewers, and wrap a bit of the tap around it like a flag (its adhesive)......

aha, perfect. I love 3M.

So small nails and tacks are fine to stick into trees as long as they don't penetrate the bark?

I'm just wondering how many people are planning on going out. I was thinking I may hide some clues, and want to know how many copy's to make. 3 should probibly suffice right?

Went out to North Vancouver mec and checked the climbing secton. couldnt find it, but managed to find something that might work in the biking isle.

I guess you meant the Vancouver store? was this recently, because I'd rather drive down as an excuse to play in the big Vancouver store if they still have it.

This is a pretty cool idea. I wonder if we could set up some regional versions of these. I would love to wander around in the woods at night trying to find treasures.

yup vancouver store has 300 foot rolls of the stuff.

looks like i exceeded 25 GB of photos this month on photobucket, my images are "suspended" until the 2oth....LMAO!!!

Was just out there setting it up this afternoon. I may have made it a bit difficult, and it may take a few hours. Be prepared when you go out, have enough stuff to set up a shelter just incase. There are SEVERAL stream crossings. some of them have gotten quite deep and are uncrossable by hopping rocks. So be sure to bring water proof footwear. Goretex hiking boots did a fine job on most. little damp.

Also, my dad stole my small day bag and went on vacation, in it was my PSK, and compass. that said, there will be no compass use. sorry.

cool beans,

another bc scavenger hunt. its been pissin rain all week so im wondering how flooded the trails will be during this hunt.

also i skimmed the thread but dont see any clues, hints or starting points.

didnt expect it to be THAT difficult :D

thanks for keeping this thing going, if i find this i got a very nice price lined up for the next bc scavenger hunt.

cheers.

I guess I'll reveal the location make sure you all (Edit: Both) know how to get there. Full directions will be updated tomorrow. Most of the trail is already layed out as far as i have you wandering around the woods for a good amount of time. I'm just trying to find a special place to hide it.

It's an old riffle range they've been trying to develop for some time. but a nice little piece of woods in suburbia non the less. Lots of deciduous trees too, i have no idea why. I picked this place mostly because its hard to not find your way out if you get lost at night. Head south. Or west. or east. If you head north like a dumb ass you'll find yourself on a hill looking down on where you should have been. So its pretty fool proof.

Google maps named it wrong, so here's a map and directions.
