Lower Mainland Night Scavanger Hunt II

lol i was just joking.. the amsn icon kinda gave it away :P

Trying to come off all cool now are we?
That's not the Amsn icon. But im sure you also noted the photoshop, and wmp icons which i could not possibly be running on ubuntu, had the icons not been stolen.

You sir have just entered a geek off battle :P

lol. looked like amsn. i havent used ubuntu since 7.01? so im clearly not in the linux loop.

btw on your map, will we be playing in what appears to be the wooded area left of the big dot you placed at the end of your red outline?

yup. Starts in the pale looking patch of deciduous trees, but goes up higher into conifers.

Bushman I saw you have a habit of making tea when out hiking. If you do I suggest you do it up higher with water coming from the conifer section. The lower soil has a high lead content as it was used as a riffle range. You can find spent cartridges if you look carefully. Boy scouts used to camp up there but stopped when somebody tested the soil. Up higher is quite pristine though.

Directions added to front page. I will keep this bumped up until bushman5 and jca21 chime in that they've seen it.

ah yes, the old shooting range! generations of Scouts trained there, learning firearm safety, and marksmanship! of course that was prior to a bunch of whiners getting the bad firearms club shut down.....

most of my tea gathering has been near the first contest area near the old wooden logging road.

:D

I have seen the clues! damn! makes my scavenger hunt look easy! :) I'm going to let JCA21 have first crack at this, then i'll head out if he cant find it.

alright, but try and get it this weekendish. Not sure how long the battery's on the watch will keep beeping for.

im stacked for the weekend guys. sorry, someone else will have to take a crack at this first. i wont be able to get at it till maybe tuesday, possibly even thursday.

well in that case! , guess its time to charge up the RCR123's for the flashlights, grab my ruck and GB ax and head out tomorrows night! I would tonight, but the Guinness is icy cold and free flowing,,,,,,,,, :)

i was there and did the entire route... including coming out the wrong way and ending up with an extra long hike back to the car. didn't find anything though. after the last instruction, there were only two markers and i didn't find an X, although I found maybe possibilities. Also found many mossy rocks. I combed through the area and didn't hear any beeps either, so I assumed that someone else found it already. Or did I just not look hard enough?

Has anyone found it?

Thanks to munky88 for organizing such a neat scavenger hunt! I think my saturday evening would have been less eventful had it not been for this little adventure. Although I didn't find anything out there and made it all the way to the last section, it was a lot of fun. Ah well.. better luck next time right? =)

ONE HECK OF A WICKED NIGHT TIME TREASURE HUNT!!!!!!! Munky, very cool of you to set this up, cheers!

yep i found the loot.

My night started out at around 2030 hours, loaded up the ruck with multiple flashlights knives, GB axe, tarp, spare batts, fire kit food/water and camera.

Got to the trailhead at around 2100 hours parked the truck and loaded up. Spotted the first reflective marker, lit up by the streetlight. Game on!. I had written down the clues in a Rite In The Rain Book in point form. I fired up the SureFire 8Ax and flipped down the red lens to preserve the night vision. The markers were very well placed in relation to the clues. I went down the wrong trail once, but quickly realized the mistake when I did'nt come across the next clue. Doubled back and went a little further.

here is what the markers looked like with the red lens:

Continued on up and down the trails, over logs, thru thick forest, mud puddles, the two creeks, and came to the last marker. Found the mossy rock and sat on it. listening. 4 minutes passed, nothing, I sat there for about 30 minutes, cupping my ears straining to hear the beeping of the watch every 4 minutes. Nada. Ok i thought, the batteries are dead, that must be it....

So i started a spiral search around the big mossy rock, looking under over into onto EVERYTHING! Stuck my hands into crevices under logs, under rocks, stumps, praying i did'nt get bit by an irate animal. NADA!

Sat in the dark again on the rock again listening.......

suddenly a light flashed back up the trail then disappeared! I assumed it was someone else looking for the treasure. I sat silently on the rock, in the dark, The light disappeared and i assumed the person had walked further up the trail. I sat on the rock for several more minutes..............not wanting to reveal my location! ;)

A few minutes later a little tiny branch being stepped on not 10 feet from me alerted me that i was not alone  . I aimed the Fenix TK11 on high at the spot and thumbed it on. AUGH! completely blinded and surprised the person!!! TEEEHEEE!!! :D

It was none other than the creator of the treasure hunt! MUNKY88!!! we both laughed for a minute and i said sorry for blinding him...... :o (Fenix TK11 on high pretty much destroys your night vision and you see spots for several minutes......).

I told Munky88 that i had scoured the area, but I thought that the watch batts were dead, because i did;nt hear it from the mossy rock. Munk88 said actually, this is'nt the rock, its further down the trail.

OOPS! :foot:

so we go down the trail a ways, something about a X made from two sticks.....oops :foot: i missed that clue. It did'nt matter the sticks had fallen over or been moved prolly by a dog. We got close to were the X sticks had been and Munky88 gave me one more clue.

I looked around, in the wrong area at first. Sat for several minutes and then heard the watch!

beep beep beep. But where was it? waited for another 4 minutes with the lights off and then beep beep beep, AH-HA!!!!! spotted the dim light form the watchface!

WOOOT! new knife!

inside the ALOKSAK was a very funny handwritten note (Congrats creepy night wanderer!) a sparkler and matches! and a handmade knife made by Munky88, from CPM-154cm steel (hope i got that right), and cord wrapped with paracord! very cool!.

So this is a big thank you to MUNKY88 for A: setting up the course, B: making a very cool knifeand C: for meeting another local Bladeforums member!

I took a picture of the knife and note, while the sparkler was lit.

Munky88 tried out my Kabar/backer BK9, and several of my flashlights, i tried out a few of his blades, and then we headed out down the trail, pausing to clear a few logs. Munky had the Norse hawk he found from the last treasure hunt, and i had my GB axe. We took turns chopping a 10" thick downed tree across the trail., and then headed out to the trailhead.

Very fun night, thanks again Munky88, great setup, great prize, and very cool to meet you in person. Your on for future hikes!:cool: (sorry flybri, beat ya to it, however stay tuned, there will be another one very soon!)

I missed the X too, turns out they had fallen down or had been moved by a dog. So your not alone in missing it at first. I probably would have stayed all night hunting for it.....hahahhahahahaha

what time were you there? I swear i saw a flash from a light halfway thru.......

Yeah, sorry about the X. I should have stuck up another marker or something. even walked past its remains myself until I realized I'd gone to far, went back and found it all askew. Would be wise to bring things off the trail for the finale.
They wernt standing up. It was just laying on the ground, 2 big branches with the greenery stripped off and laying on top forming a pretty clear X. Dog probibly got it, silly me.

I feel like I've cheated you. glad you had fun at least. Will definitely be doing this again sometime when i get more booty. so you haven't missed your chance.

Bushman, does the cord wrapped knife fit in the companion sheath of the Becker bk9?

Now that there's 4 of us we should get out for a night hike sometime and play with knives.

darn.. i think you guys were there just a few minutes before i was there then!

i went out there with a friend after dinner and there was a pickup and a small car parked near the trailhead when i arrived. i was the one with the blue matrix, if you guys noticed on your way back. i think we started out around 8:30, although we didn't try to be discrete with the flashlights and all that. we got hung up a little with the campfire pit clue because we didn't see the barrel right away and were looking around for scorch marks on the ground instead.

on the way back, instead of heading south along the wet trail with the stream flowing through it, we took the one leading towards the city lights and ended up in a residential neighbourhood. from there, it was another 30-45 mins or so back to the car through city streets.

i'm surprised we didn't see you guys then, but yea, maybe next time =). i actually go to school in seattle and was back up for spring break, but i'm back in seattle now. maybe i'll get to bump into you guys next time i'm around, either during easter long weekend or after exam season! thanks again, munky. it was one heck of a way to spend a saturday night =).
