Loyalty...

If my dogs in trouble I fight, if I'm in trouble he fights.

I have hunted hogs too long, if something is getting the better of my dog I know from experience what I'll do without even thinking. Chris

I actually got to test myself on this one while grouse hunting in the Hinckley area of Minnesota 1 year ago Sept. 15.

While hunting in cover like this

locked up on point so I got ready to shoot my first grouse of the season and sent him in to flush it. This is where time stood still, he charges in the cover and the trees start moving the ground even seemed to shake a bit, and with some growling and snapping noises Radar comes rolling out of the cover with a black bear way closer then anyone should ever have to be to one IMO.
It all worked out though, I fired my 20ga in the air and called Radar who I couldn't see on the other side of the bear, he actually looked over at me from the other side and I stepped in to grab him. The bear didn't seem to want to have anything to do with this encounter and rolled and started running like I've never seen anything run, dirt and debris flying through the air and all.

Radar seemed to have a smile on his face and not a scratch on him. I called it a day for the opener and didn't go out again until all the leaves had fallen and I also bought the dog a bell.

This bear was not a giant maybe a bit over a hundred pounds I judged this because Radar runs about sixty five pounds and was blotted out by the bear while on the other side

I have kids and a wife but in the heat of the moment the dog was the only focus.

Black bears kill more people than grizzlies. Maybe it's just because there are a lot more of them or that people are more complacent around them. Probably a combination of the two.

I have two small kids: 5 years and 8 months. Right now they are my purpose for everything. In your situation I would probably leave the dog.

If, however, the bear were coming for me and I had the means (read firearm) to stop him I wouldn't hesitate. If it wasn't for the kids, my normal reaction would be to look for a way out without harming the bear. I have a pretty strong drive to let nature be. I'm known to stop and chase snakes off the road, even rattlesnakes. But I'll suppress that drive to make sure I get home in one piece.

I am not looking to start a fight and will not comment one way or the other but do you eat meat. Chris

well that wud leave batman in the cold wudnt it? heheh

nah but i shud really move to a place where i can keep em, coz whenever i have a gf and she has cats, the gf complains for lack of attention hahah

I have to stand with my dog. He damn sure would for me. Man or beast, predators get no free meal here. Joe

I can see the news story already. "In other news... Dylan Fletcher's dog came under attack this morning while playing a game of fetch. The unassuming grizzly bear got more that he bargained for. Unfortunately for the citizens within a 70 mile radius, the bear didn't run in the other direction, Dylan's temper reached level red, and he punched the bear in the face. This is a picture taken by a traffic light camera in a neighboring state..."

Members of PETA and other wildlife preservation societies were quoted in saying "No, we aren't mad at him. Please tell Dylan he looks very nice today and please don't punch us in the face."

he did right defending his dog. we are all going to die sometime. i would rather go out fighting

First I would have to pull my wife off of the bear. (Mess with the dog and she gets riled. Poor bear!) Then I could attack. However, I think my dog would be too quick for the bear.
When ever my dog senses any danger around it prepares to defend her family. I feel as if I should be prepared to do the same for our dog.

Yes I eat meat. I even fish and occasionally hunt, and I'll shoot every feral cat I can get my scope on. But I don't kill without a reason. And it drives my wife crazy that I'll scoop up the occasional spider, scorpion, beetle, whatever, that gets into the house and put it out.

Like I said, if I thought my going home to be Dad was imperiled, I would shoot and not lose any sleep over the decision. But when we're in the woods, we're encroaching in their territory and I respect that.

I love my dogs but I love my wife and girls more.It depends on the situation. If I had a gun adequate for the job in hand that is one thing, but I wouldn't jump on a bear with a knife to save a dog. If any bear was after my wife or girls I would jump on it bare handed if that was all I had. However I won't be in bear country unarmed.

You sound like me. Feral cats and dogs are horrible for the local fauna. I stop and shoo turtles and snakes out of the road and get on to the kids at the local paintball field for shooting lizards and birds. I am also an avid fisherman and hunter and never give it a second thought.

If my best bud is being seriously hurt and I have the means to kill or stop whatever is doing it....look out here I come.

As far as their territory, it used to be and I respect that. Chris

A few years ago there was a bear attack on a canoeist and his dog in the area where I live. Long story short, while the bear was busy with the dog the man jumped on the bears back and stabbed it to death thereby saving the life of his dog. And most likely his own as well.

I was talking to two of my co workers about this and was suprised to hear when they said that they would have ran away while the bear was busy with the dog. They laughed at me after I had said that I would have done the same thing that man had done. I guess we will never know if I would have the balls to jump on a bears back to save my dog but im pretty damn sure I know what I would do.

Keep in mind here we are dealing with a black bear and not a grizzly or brown. I belive there is a difference between the three. I have had a few encounters with black bears before and every time they have been terrified of me, I dont fear them. I dont think dog or man stands much of a chance against a grizzly.

What would you do? Is a dog just a dog or is it a loyal friend that would give its life to protect you and deserves the same?

No black bear is going to kill my dog without a fight. heres a link to the story.

I would have stayed and fought if my dogs were attacked. I figure between two pissed off 90 lb German Shepherds and one pissed off 250 lb man we'd have decent odds.

Otto, any man worth his salt would defend his friend, his dog. Jack, those are two fine dogs you shared your pictures of.
