Loyalty...

First I would have to pull my wife off of the bear. (Mess with the dog and she gets riled. Poor bear!) Then I could attack. However, I think my dog would be too quick for the bear.
When ever my dog senses any danger around it prepares to defend her family. I feel as if I should be prepared to do the same for our dog.

can I use my wife as a distraction so I can save my dog? think that would be bad?

Otto, any man worth his salt would defend his friend

I protect my investment. My dog's worth is only what he can provide for me. In the case of bear attack, dog's function just became bear distraction. He'll get his reward in doggy heaven. Seventy virgin bitches? Who knows!

You guys have gone all sentimental on me.

There's not a chance in the world, that I'd stand there with a weapon, while my hunting dog gets torn limb from limb. Our unspoken agreement was essentially "fight to the death" to save the other.

some people are just wired different. I didn't choose to be protective over my dogs.

I'd definitely take my chances in the fight rather than running. You're not running anywhere he can't go, and faster.

This is one of the reasons I advocate carrying a suitable firearm while on the trail, especially with a loved one (such as a dog). You might feel comfortable using a stick against a wildcat/bear/whatever, but what if that's all your wife/son/etc had? You'd want to keep them safe with the best tool for the job: a firearm.

Risks will vary depending on locale, but the risk of two legged predators is usually not that different.

Try and save the dog all the way. This reminds me of the former Steeler who died a while back trying to save his dogs from a tree he was cutting down. Tree fell on him killing him.

My wife and I have not been blessed with two legged children , so ours have 4 legs and a tail. Any dog willing to stand up and fight a bear ( or any other preadetor ) on my behalf , gets the same from me
