Love the looks of this one and I've got other Bob Lum models. Anyone know when this one might be available? Guess I should just preorder and put it out of my mind until it happens?

That Darn Dao...

No clue, just thought it would be fun to say. Spyderco has been pumping them out this year so probably sooner than later. Other than the Rhino, everything else has come fast

I kind of want to preorder as well. Really no idea when they might hit, though. It'll probably be the most challenging fixed blade Spyderco has done.

wonder how many are getting made? sure like this one, not sure i like the price point, but ill cross that bridge when i see one....

Thanks for the replies. Decided to go ahead and preorder one. Now the waiting begins. JB I don't have a clue how many Spyderco will make but I'm guessing that given the size they might make ever of this one than a smaller model. I might try and research other Flash Batch models that have happened and see if they are all similar sizes.

Back in the day (mid 80's as I remember), I was a member of the Guild as was Bob Lum. He didn't make too many knives but he had a great eye. When he made the Darn Dao, I purchased one of the first pieces. I don't know how many he made, but I'd guess it is under 20. I tried to make them in production, but could find no one that could grind them in production. The long, wide flat grind displayed the makers extreme skill. Eric used to haul it around up on the mountain when he was a young boy exploring in the forest.

Now that the technology and equipment is able to make a production model, we thought to do so. We'll make 1200 pieces out of CPM-154. Probably the only opportunity for the afi to actually own such a piece. It's expensive (sorry 'bout that), but very challenging to make and bring to the market. The leather sheath was designed by Michael Janich and it too is a work of art. Like the Chris Clayborn "Proficient", it is a classic out of the chute.

I tried to get Bob Lum to design a folder for us, but he said that he wasn't making folders at the time and didn't feel it would be ethical for him to design a knife without having made one. Later, he designed a folder. A slip-joint version of what is now the Chinese Folder. (I own the proto) As he developed and refined the design, we finally were able to make a production version.

who knows how many they have access to? wonder if a pre order is solid for getting one, or as good as gold? guess we'll find out.

Yeah, the preorder sounds good at first blush until you realize that you could go on their list and they might never get enough to actually get to you. With 1200 pieces and the price point they will be coming in at, I am guessing they won't go to quickly. Given that and putting my name on the preorder list at this point would likely put me after more than a few folks, I think I will take my chances that I will be able to land one somewhere else. Moreover, the throwers and PM2 Maxamet have priority, and if the timing on the Darn Dao is close to those two, I may have to pass. We shall see.

Most/some of the retail shops don't have a preorder, but rather an email notification for when the knife becomes available. Best bet might be to preorder at one and sign up for emails at the others. You can always cancel the preorder if another retailer gets them in first.

This is an amazing looking knife and I would like to buy one as a user for camping stuff so hopefully they will be around for a while.

I think that at its price point and considering its large size that these will be readily available to all who want one.

Saw a post on the Spyderco home forum. One of the members posted that he picked up one at SMKW on 11/19. Said they only got in 3-4 of them. Not showing on their website.
