Lum Darn Dao Flash Batch

How's the balance in hand? I mean, I know it'll be perfect, but I just placed an order and am already impatient.

The quality on the last Flash Batch was so darn exceptional that I had to get this one. I don't have much use for a knife like this, but Spyderco is my favorite production brand and I want to encourage them to keep making these one-off runs.

I was going to buy one new fixed blade this year and it came down to a Rustic Bravo(Lon Humphrey's take on a BRKT Bravo 1). I had figured I wouldn't even get a shot at picking up one of these....I clicked on this thread to just look at people's pictures of them.
its blade heavy but in a good way. balance point is about at the spyderhole. it feels amazing in the hand. i own many big fixed blades by all makers. this one is unique. youll like it.

Wasn't supposed to be here until Tuesday but I'm happy to report that #101 was just delivered. I'm very pleased!
congrats Sir. it is better than pics(or better said my crappy pics) can show. i was blown away at the quality and fit and finish etc.

so are ya gonna use yours or keep it for the collection? i might need another so i can use one and really enjoy it.:)

I'll probably lock it away. I primarily got it because I have a liking for Lum designs and have several BM and Spyderco models based on Bob's designs. Some I use and EDC but most are just for my pleasure and pride in ownership.

I agree the F&F is superb. It's nice and thick which I like. Not Busse thick but by far the thickest Spydeco I have.

That being said we're doing Christmas tomorrow with the granddaughters and this would sure make slicing that prime rib as much pleasure as eating it will be.

Just missed mine. Will be at the PO at 8:59am on Tuesday...

ok......just wow. i got mine.

i complained on the pricing point early on in this thread but i was wrong to complain. this knife is over the top great. i get it now. if ya didnt get one dont wait. its that great. ill add pics later......

This ^^^^^... just daaaaaannnnng! The Darn Dao will take awhile to sellout but will make a very nice collectible down the road for those of you (and me) that don’t have a real use for it.

Argh mine were sent signature required! Now I have to wait till close of business tomorrow!

It may have been a flash batch, but there were still 1,200 of them. That's not really super limited in a meaningful sense given that collector knives aren't a huge market in the grand scheme of things, and the Darn Dao is always going to be a niche design. I think it has very strong long-term collector appeal, but it will likely sell slowly due to the high price and limited market early on. I think it'll sell well, but it won't be like an M390 limited run PM2.

I'd like to have one but not at $389.97 nor next year's street price of $422.47. At 1,200 pieces it's quite possible that in a year's time we'll see them discounted hopefully to $300 or less.

I'm thinking not for the same reason we never saw the Slysz Bowie discounted even after it was discontinued. Manufacturing costs meant the margin was low.

That may also be the wishful thinking of a person who bought two at the 2017 prices, though.

EDIT: Just got mine.

FYI, they come in the Spyderco padded zipper cases that a lot of the other very high-end Spydercos come in. I didn't know that. There is a tag on the exterior of the zipper bag that has the serial number of the knife as well. It's shipped in a cardboard sheath with a tip guard. The sheath is very well designed, but the one of mine that I opened does not fit perfectly in it.

How is the fit of the sheath lacking? Mine fits fine though I don't see it being all that easy to use based on the design. Then again I don't see this offering being a user as much as a collector piece.

I'll have to see if maybe I'm inserting it slightly wrong. Mine seems to hang up such that it can't be inserted easily for the last 1/4" or so of the sheath, which is important because of how the retention strap fits around the guard.

^THIS

I'm sure it is a great knife but let's be honest with the price.

yep. have to open the sheath a bit to get that last bit in. being thicker it will hang up on reinsertion. not a big deal though if a collector.
