so what does everyone think of the m-tech line of knives? i use them for beaters sometimes. the 440 steel holds up pretty good as far as im concerned. but im looking for your opinions. so lets duke it out

Some of the M-Tech knives are okay, and some are not. The problem is that you never know if you are going to get a good one. The one M-Tech that I own, I was able to check out before making my purchase. The first one I checked out had some blade play and a few marks that I didn't care for. The second one was good. They were the same model. Even though they are inexpensive, I don't think I would purchase one without having the opportunity to look it over first.

IIRC, M-Tech was the company that stole all of the designs brought to production by the original owner of this site, Mike Turber. Mike attempted to create knives at factories made in china, held to high quality standards and using designs that he commissioned and purchased from US knifemakers. The idea was to deliver really cool knives, affordable to non-knife-nuts who weren't concerned with having the latest steel.

However the factory that he used made his knives for him during the day, then ran at night making the same knives to be sold at reduced prices by M-Tech. Mike couldn't compete with his own product when sold at prices lower than he could afford (due to M-Tech not paying for design fees, costs of tooling, etc). Nor could he afford to take M-Tech to court, especially given the "limited" recognition that china gives to intellectual property. So they sucked him dry for their own profit and cast off his carcass.

In sum, (1) yes they are a good value and (2) they are pure poison.

All I know is whatever factory is putting these out is also manufacturing similar designs for Boker and Gerber and S&W. If you're not looking for a more modern or exotic steel, some of these models are easily equal to the stuff coming out of Japan not so long ago. Quite impressive.

I knew it! Thats why we have a lot of counterfeits which look almost the same except for a few minor cosmetic differences.

What I have seen so far here that are fakes:

A gerber kiowa (almost perfect)
Boker plus armed forces folders
Boker subcoms (Black coated, no tapping for tip down carry)

Thanks...now I know I was right.

you do in fact remember correctly.

IIRC there was some debate on whether he actually paid anyone the fees though, IIRC.

also, IIRC some saw it as "poetic justice" lol(ie they ripped of the guy who was ripping folks off.....).

i've never seen one used that held up. that's their folders, i've never seen anyone with their FB's.

a guy at work had 20 or so, we all ended up with one (mine was won in a pool game) they all fell apart.

honestly, i wouldn't want one if they were free :(

MTech is the cutlery equivalent of a child molester. Worst scum on earth.

Their designs are stolen. From large production companies down to individual customer knifemakers, they steal from all.

The quality is of the lowest possible caliber. It's not just junk, it's dangerous. If you can actually keep the knife sharp enough to cut anything more than a single piece of newspaper without instantly going dull, then you're liable to be on the way to the emergency room because the lock failed on you and guillotined your finger.

Even if the knife is free, it's not a good value, because even if you have the best heath insurance in the USA, your copay for stitches will blow that deal.

If you absolutely can't resist the low, low price of an MTech (they're often on special at Big5 for like $2 each), pick and choose for one that actually has good lock-up and won't collapse on you. Even then, the knife will have the lifetime durability of bulldozer blade made of aluminum foil.

Really, you can get a decent-enough Gerber or CRKT or Byrd for not that much money. It won't be a fantastic knife, but it'll be worlds better than that MTech crap, and you won't lose a finger. I have to ask, Mr. blade_lover228, do you have experience with better knives? If you think the junk on an MTech holds up well, then I'm led to believe that you have not. That's fine if that's the case, but you really need to experience better cutlery. I don't mean to sound snobbish or elitist. An MTech is like a 20 year old Ford Tempo. Sure it's cheap and it runs, but it's junk and destined to die very soon. For a few bucks you can get a 5 year old Kia, and sure, it's not a new Honda, and definitely not a Porsche, but it works just fine and you can trust it.

Wow, I really have to disagree with the quality. I won't start commenting on the ethics or moral issues of the company, but for the price both of my M-techs have been of exeptional quality. Edge holding is quite fine and tolerances and finishes have been satisfactory. Though I find it a little disturbing to recognise most of their desings from some other knives I actually own....

Even though, value for money, I say.

they are utter scrap. I received as a gift a MTECH Karambit , person who got it for me was not a knife person , but remembered me carrying my Emerson Karambit and thought they were getting a deal at $7. I waved it open twice , then the lockbar jumped all the way across the blade tang and off the other side.

Garbage , not worth any price.

I bought an M-Tech at the flea market a few years ago just as a knife to take apart and play with. It was a complete piece of crap. But it was $5. You gets what you pays for, I say.

I didn't know M-Tech had some sort of history, especially one that embarassing. It was an awful knife, but come on - these are the knives you get at flea markets for $5! Don't be surprised if it chops your finger off, I say.

Yo! Harsh criticism from some (remember all companies enable the bourgeoisie to exploit the proletariat)...M-Tech is just a low end knife that's all...going camping/hunting...need a quick, cheap knife...MTech is fine for the weekend but that's about it...Late!
Oh...and I'm no commie by the way...just hate corporations

That, sir, is a load of crap, for without those offering the jobs, job-seekers have no recourse. It's a mutual agreement to mutual benefit.

A mindless hatred of corporations accomplishes nothing... except perhaps insuring that those doing the hating will never actually hold jobs.

Ha! Fool!...you have bought into their lies and trickery...for those that believe in any mutual benefit between those with and those without are naive and ignorant...go now, work and break yourself for the elite and accomplish nothing, peasant...for I am a warrior, living in age of weaklings who all settle for their dreadful and menial of lives...my destiny does not lie with them but in the halls of the Valkyrie! Fight on!

"Workers of the World, Unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains!"

If only this were in W&C ....

I'm kinda in the same frame of mind. I have one that I bought out of curiosity, I looked at 10-15 different knives, some the same pattern, some different, and found 1 or 2 that had good fit and locked up solid.

Gave about 10 bucks IIRC, and gave this one a whirl for awhile and it ain't half bad.

Would never order one sight unseen though. (probably won't ever buy another one at all, they are a tad "mall ninja")
