M4 Military....Sadly disappointed Part 2

Stop whining.

+1

How is it being M4 a bad thing? It's a better steel than S30V, and if S30V is enough, why did you even purchase the knife? No, why did you even purchase the knife? All these points are direct attributes that make it a special Military.

You sound like you didn't know what you were ordering.

Here's why I'm disappointed:

1) Hole opener. I prefer thumb studs or flippers
2) Lock. These are useless, it should be a slip joint
3) Looks just like a regular Military with a frame lock. It should look more like a car or a tree stump.
4) I can't start my car with it.
5) My back itches
6) I would've liked it to have been manufactured in Canada.

Now, I realize that Knife Works never said they were going make any changes other than the G-10/framelock and the M4 steel, but I really like motorcyles and would've appreciated a nod to Ducati somewhere on the box. Maybe next time Sal will get us a winner.

I am also disappointed because I wish mine was a smatchet.........

I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Out of all the gripes some have with this knife, I do not understand the disdain towards the lock insert. I've seen it described as "an eyesore." It's on the inside of the friggin knife! Pretty slick and concealed implementation IMHO.

To be honest you should have known all this going in (save the "grippy" bit and the rough opening.) Many, especially Yablanowitz, have criticised the Ti Millie's heavy weight. The lanyard hole isn't larger because it's a Military I, not a Paramilitary II or Manix II. No reason at all why it should be larger. Jimping, or lack of it, should be apparent from all the other Milis you (should have) seen or handled. M4 is the purpose of the sprint, more or less. If you don't like it you should never have signed up-no reason to (for example) buy an Orange Mili and say you don't like the colour, or sign up for a CTS-XHP Manix2 and then say you don't like the flat grind, so in the same fashion I don't think your complaint about M4 is all too good.

I can say that the issues with stiffness and rough G10 will work themselves out with a bit of carry, and that M4 is an excellent steel. Not much you can do about the lanyard hole save get someone to drill it bigger, but on the bright side taking material off is easier than putting it on :)

I'm sorry to hear people are dissatisfied with their millies. I guess I'm a lucky guy as I love mine and wouldn't take double my money for it if asked. My only notable was the blade did have a less sharp edge on the curve and towards the tip. The back was hair shaving, but the area near the tip not so much. A quick strop on diamonds and leather fixed that though.

This M4 is wonderful stuff and Spyderco really nailed the heat as usual.

The pinned and screwed on wear bar ( technical name?) may not look as pleasing as a bare Ti lock but that interests me not a bit. As long as it performs, and lasts I'm fine with it.

I'll get another if I can swing it.

Thank-you! Nice thing to wake up to.... smiles and laughs!

You made me spit coffee on my keyboard. Thanks for the laugh!

Winner or whiner? This isn't part of this thread's OP's complaints, but things like "I'm sadly disappointed because they didn't change the clip and clip attachment method" just mystify me. What were you expecting? Same thing on points like the G10, btw.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on many of the points you made. As a matter of fact, some of the complaints don't seem to make much sense to me.

The G10 on me knife seems to be the same texturing as many other G10 Spyderco knives. I wasn't too surprised at how grippy it was. At the same time, though, you want more jimping. Where would you put this jimping? I think there is more than enough on the choil and thumb ramp.

As already stated in this thread, the point of this sprint run was for the CPM M4 steel. If you preferred S30V, why go through the process and wait for this knife. Surely, you had to have known what you were getting into before you opened the box.

As for the lanyard hole, this is still a Military, regardless of blade steel, handle material, etc. I don't see why they would put a larger lanyard hole and have to possibly change machining or whatever. Seems like a loss as this is only a sprint run, not full production.

The opening issues can be a bit annoying, but those go away with time.

Just because this knife had a long wait does not mean that it was somehow supposed to be perfect. It is still a production knife and as with all production knives, there are bound to be some imperfections. I think Spyderco did a fantastic job on this run. I plan on using the hell out of mine.

The G10 is smoother than other spydes. I was suprized by that.

:D:D You a funny guy Kaizen

Let's see...the street price on this is less than the standard S30V Ti version...and the knife was described by the dealer when the knife was first offered...but I am going to choose to believe that it will be a complete custom one-off...and I get to complain when it isn't... I vote with you, and I know that both KW and Spyderco will take care of any legitimate problems...and that there are literally hundreds of people who were disappointed that they didn't get on the list for this knife and that most of them would still buy it in a heartbeat...

it's like the hype surrounding this knife had people expecting the mother of all spydercos or something.

people need to understand that it was a SPRINT RUN. not a new model. why would anyone complain about changes not being made? no one ever expected tip up carry, enlarged lanyard tubes or anything else besides a standard Military design with Ti framelock, black G10 and a CPM M-4 blade.

If you want something else... wait for the Military 2! then you can complain that it isn't your perfect knife.

I, however had realistic expectations, and love mine!! And the ss lockbar insert is a fantastic design, and huge bonus!

And even if you didn't like it, you can sell it to someone who will, at a profit at that!
